Ghana joined the Lets do it! Movement in 2011 through Junior Chamber International (JCI) Ghana and had the opportunity to host the West Africa Regional Gathering of Lets do it! World Cleanup 2012 in Accra on September 10, 2011.
Background
A three member delegation from Ghana participated in the Lets do it! World Cleanup 2012 Conference in Estonia as the only representatives from Africa.
Returning from Estonia, the team met and commenced preparation on the Lets Clean Ghana 2012 Campaign by meeting as a group to work on our proposal and how to find partners. We partnered with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly who supports our cleanups with logistics such as rakes, shovels, etc .
The focus of the Lets Clean Ghana 2012 is to clear waste from drains to allow smooth flow of liquid waste to prevent the outbreak of cholera and malaria.
Two major cleanups have been undertaken in the country by JCI Ghana members and members of the various communities. The first cleanup was held in Accra, the Capital City of Ghana.
The second cleanup was held in the Western Region, specifically, Tarkwa, a gold mining city of Ghana on 27th October, 2012.
CHALLENGE
Lack of commitment on the part of most team members to the project as a result of their work demands, they do not have enough time to share. Inadequate funds to facilitate the project
Way Forward
The way forward is to launch our digital waste map on drains to educate the public on the effect of choked drains with waste. Also, we are going to intensify our fund raising drive by seeking for more sponsorship and partner other organizations so that we can complete our project of clearing waste from drains in the entire country by the end of 2013.
Opportunities
the President of Ghana has directed all Metropolitan , Municipal and Districts in collaboration with Zoom Alliance to clear waste in their various communities. Therefore, a National Sanitation Taskforce has been inaugurated by the President in pursuance to achieve a clean Ghana.
Parliament of Ghana has approved a budget for the Sanitary Sewer and Storm water Drainage Alleviation Project by the AMA. The facility is for the improvement of drainage and sewer systems in the Accra metropolis. From the above mentioned, Lets Clean Ghana has the opportunity to partner with the National Sanitation Task Force and AMA to achieve its objective of free waste drains.
Expectations
We expect that all African countries will concentrate on the resources available in their country to marshal efforts in ensuring a clean environment. Member countries should be proactive in soliciting for more partnerships from corporate institutions and other NGOs in their various countries for the clean-up projects.
Cheers!!!
