Questions:
Discuss the activity used in ESL classroom method practised in Malaysian Primary School. Discuss the strengths and limitations of each activity.

Choose one activity and discussed strength and limitation.

Designed suitable activities to fulfil requirements of teaching method chosen.

Example of Activity:
Students : Year 3 Theme: World of Self Grammatical Items : Verbs (Simple Sentences), Punctuation. Justification :

To introduce the basic function of verbs. To bring real-life situations into the classroom. To help students used correct pronouns while speaking. To aid students punctuate meaningfully

Language skills : Listening and Speaking


1.2.3 Listen to and repeat simple rhymes and songs, paying attention to pronunciation, stress and intonation correctly. 1.6.1 Listen to and enjoy childrens songs, rhymes, and poems. 2.4.4 Recite simple poems and jazz chants with expression and appropriate gestures. 2.6.1 Give non-verbal response to the story heard or read.

Other: Total Physical Response, using different kinds of voices, and coordinating in groups and pairs.

Procedures:

Teacher reads the poem Two Noisy Sisters in classroom. Poem: Two noisy sisters, Talking to the phone, Laughed at each other, And they laughed again, Lets go shopping, Good plan! Teacher asks the students to read after her.

Teacher describes to students how to act the poem out and what action they may do. Poem and suggested actions:
Two noisy sisters, (walk around , talking to their phones with loud voice, waving to people around them) Talking to the phone, (Holding phone) Laughed at each other, (Laugh) And they laughed again, (Laugh again) Lets go shopping, (Holding hands) Good plan!
(Show excited faces)

Teacher asks the students to read the poem again and do the actions described.

Then, the teacher divides all students into 3 big groups. Each group will get one different poem to be act out in front of their friends.

Two Tall Daddies: Two tall daddies Walking down the lane, Waved at each other, And then they waved again, How are you? How are you? Lovely day again!

Two Best Friends: Two best friends, Walking down the lane, Waved at each other, Smiled at each other How do you do? How do you do? What a nice day! Two Little Brothers Two little brothers, Running down the lane, Bumped into each other, And then bumped into each other again, Forgive me, Forgive me, I hope you are fine!

Discuss the strengths and limitations of the activity.

Strengths:

Students may improve their pronunciation. Active participation from students. Build self-esteem - confident to speak. Cooperative learning.

Limitation:

The students may find it difficult to read and act out at the same time.
