Distributed Generations and India

Rahul Jawale
Lecturer, GuruNanak Institute of Engg.& Management ,Nagpur.

Energy revolution
15th and 16th centuries Resources such as biomass and in few places coal provided energy. Wood was main source of energy as available nearby. Latter dependence on coal increased In mid 20th century the use of petroleum increased. As supply is limited we cant make demand this is the limit of centralized generation system.

Present Scenario
Climate change and Surge in demand for Fossil Fuels Trying to reduce emission of greenhouse gases Increase in prices of fossil fuel These trends have paved path for Distributed generations

What is Distributed Generation?

Electric power generation units placed near the consumption and connected directly to the Distribution networks. Different terminology. According size Dont confuse DG with RE. Due to monopoly of electric utility many industry prefer NUGs.

Distributed Generation In India

Large and Dispersed country Decentralize power generation system suites better. Concept of Distributed generation Decentralize plants based on wind, hydel, biomass. Around 18000 villages in remote areas Support of state and central Govt.

Crossing the technology barrier

Crossed the barrier for new optimal solution. Need of locally or alternate sources. Industries are biggest consumers of energy trying to opted for locally generating electricity. Captive power units running on fossil fuel used for flexibility. Indian sugar industry is the best example.

Overall Benefits for development

Both steam and power are utilized locally in sugar mill High thermal efficiency than centralized fossil fuel power plant Such cogeneration qualifies as a Distributed generation Project Provides uninterrupted power to nearby villages Not only proven technology but also a sound business model

Renewable Energy And Distributed Generation

Energy access, environmental considerations, combined with the increase in fossil fuel prices are the key drivers for accelerating the adoption of affordable and reliable renewable energy and Distributed Generations. Korea, China, US, Australia, Japan, India are working together. Hydrogen fueled generator in India. This help 2000 homes get reliable supply. Collaborate with Australia to produce practitioner to design RN system.

Comparison Of Options For distributed Generation In India

Among non renewable option Diesel engines are prevalent in India Gas engines may also be preferred over diesel Engines but because of some limitations lagging behind. For renewable energy option wind is good at some places Biomass gas engines are cost effective and best suited for remote areas.

Conclusion
Indian industry setup good examples for DG. Increasing Energy demand forcing Government and end user to look in to DG. Having recognized limitations of centralized plants Govt. should come up policies favoring DG system Encourage financial Institutions Profits r here! Act now! And be the top competitor.
