A STUDY ON SPATIAL QUALITY OF LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS- IN SCHOOLS OF ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION

Education being not merely the acquisition of technical knowledge,

but the understanding, with sensitivity and intelligence, of the whole problem of living-that is the whole structure of human existence. -Jiddu Krishnamurti

INTRODUCTION
Present education system is more or less like a rat race , where students are taught for examination sake, scoring better marks and to settle with a job..it

all ends there

What a child learns form these lessons matter a little.. They are trained rather than being educated in schools.

BALA (BUILDING AS LEARNING AID CONCEPT).

It explores possibility of using all facets of a school building: the walls, the doors, the windows for providing a positive learning environment for children

BALA is an effort to see the world as a child does. It relies on open spaces, greenery, surfaces on which to doodle and scribble, contraptions to learn from.

LEARNSCAPES
Learnscapes are defined as places where a learning program has been designed to permit users to interact with the environment . Their purpose is to promote and extend environmental awareness, by presenting biodiversity as the basis for environmental conservation and ecologically sustainable development
Learnscapes Projects provides many benefits to schools and communities

action based and support experiential learning

support sustainable living and improvements to a local environment outdoor classrooms for learning in the real world better environment for the future

AIM:
To understand the spatial quality of the learning environments in schools of alternative education

To incorporate the ideas of -building as learning aid (BALA), activity based learning (ABL), learnscapes in these schools to aid the teaching and learning process.

A study on spatial quality of learning environments- in schools of alternative education

OBJECTIVE:
To understand the philosophies of alternative education

To understand the activities of such schools and identifying how spatial quality can aid learning

To analyze how BALA, ABL, learnscapes be

incorporated in the building envelope of these schools.

METHODOLOGY
Understanding the philosophy of alternative education , BALA , ABL, learnscapes

Case examples for each of the ideologies understanding the requirements and needs for each in terms of space, the activity it caters to and its quality

Concluding with the requirement of these schools in terms of spaces, how should each space and surface be articulated to enhance the learning environment incorporating the concepts of BALA, ABL and learnscapes

OUTCOME: To project guidelines for articulating the space and building envelope to aid teaching learning process, enable incidental learning and enhance the learning environment by incorporating ideas of BALA, ABL etc
