## What is whole numbers?

Whole numbers are numbers that start with 0, 1, 2, 3, until infinity and are without negative sign or decimal numbers.

## Place Value & Digit

The place value and digit value of any number can be determined. Example:Number: Place Value : Digit Value 246 tenth 40 56 271 thousandth 6000

## ROUND OFF NUMBERS

When we estimate a number, we are actually giving an approximation of the number. Estimations may involve the process of rounding off the number to the required place value.

## 95 371 - 53 729 41 642

Division: Multiplication 1 284 6 382 4 4 736 X 41 44 6 382 33 +255 280 32 261 662 16 16

COMBINATIONS OF OPERATIONS

## Combination of two operations ( + and - , or X and )

Calculations involving addition and subtraction are done from left to right. Calculations involving multiplication and division are also done from left to right.

COMMON ERRORS

## To calculate based on a correct principle of calculation. Example: 216 + 412 4 =

INCORRECT (216 + 412 ) 4 = 628 4 = 157 Addition operation should not be done 1/15/2013 first.

= 216 + 103

= 319

## Smart Study Tips

Steps: 1. Starts with the calculation in the brackets if any. 2. Continue with x and from left to right. 3. Continue with + and operation from left to right.

Principle Of Calculation
(a) 22 -7 x15 5 +7 =22-(105 5) +7 =22 - 21 + 7 =8 (b) 17+ (8 x 9 - 4)2 =17+ (72 - 4) 2 =17 + (68 2) =17 + 34 =51
