Capstone & Defense of Learning

BY: NADIA ARELLANO SPONSOR: MS.DEVANEY

Goals and Objectives

To learn and discover more about myself. To learn more about teen pregnancy and how to prevent it. To discover how far I can push myself in school. To share my findings with others interested in my capstone. To motivate others to use protection and do better in

school. To help students by showing them about my experience so they can think before making a mistake.

Argument
My argument is that all students should come together to

help each other understand how important pregnancy prevention during their education time should be an important issue and how the school sometimes dont provide the right information to students.

Research
The relationship between teenage pregnancy and education goes in both
directions. Teenagers who become pregnant are more likely to drop out of school Only 38% of teen mothers who have a child before the age of 18 graduate from high school, compared to approximately 75% of women who delay child bearing until 20-21. An effort to reduce these rates, the U.S. government has funded abstinenceonly sex education programs for more than a decade. However, a public controversy remains over whether this investment has been successful and whether these programs should be continued.

Research
Data on abstinence education were retrieved from the Education Commission

of the States[16]. Of the 50 U.S. states, only 38 states had sex education laws. Only 30 out of 38 state laws contained abstinence education and the other 8 states didnt. 52 out of every 1000 girls aged between 15 and 19 in the United States gave birth, while the United Kingdom topped the list in Europeand came second overallwith just over 30 births in 1000 teenagers.

At the other end of the scale Korea, Japan, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and
Sweden had a rate of less than seven births per 1000 teenagers.

How others deal with teen pregnancy?

For example: In Ethiopia, teens attend to get marry really early and conceive right

away. Some ways to help this stop is by campaigns and organizations that encourages delaying marriage and childbearing and provides life skills and information on reproductive health. Netherlands: Other countries see them as a model for the way it approaches the prevention of teen pregnancy. They have a curriculum that focuses on values, attitudes, communication and negotiation skills, as well as biological aspects of reproduction. United Kingdom: Work with the Department for Children, Schools, and Families to reduce teenage pregnancy by supporting parents to talk to them about sex and relationships. Also by improving contraceptive and advise services.

How is it a global and local issue?

It is a international issue in which birth rates are

high and teenagers are getting pregnant at an early age sometimes because they dont receive the information we all need.

Greatest challenge?
Deciding about my topic for Capstone.

Managing my time to do my work.

Getting my posters done to get kids at school

interested in teen pregnancy and following my blog. Working on my Capstone while I was at home and taking care of my baby.

Greatest success?
My greatest success was that I was able to finish my

Capstone. I had my baby and I was able to come back to school instead of dropping out. I got people to follow me on twitter and my blog.

What did I learn from my local community?

I learned that a lot of teenagers get pregnant at the

age of 15-17 in schools and that they think that it is going to be easy to take care of a baby and finishing school on time.

Thank You.
