Substance of the promise

What actually constitutes a promise? Samuel Johnson's answer is, "A promise is the declaration of some benefit to be conferred."
Webster's Dictionary gives us this: l. One's pledge to another to do or not to do something specified, narrowly, a declaration which gives to the person to whom it is made a right to expect or to claim the performance or forbearance of a specified act. 2. Ground for hope, expectation or the assurance, often specified of eventual success.

3. That which is promised To engage to do, give, make, obtain: to make to another a promise of; also, to give one's promise to assure as "He will go, I promise you. To show or suggest beforehand; betoken; as, the clouds promise you.

Know how about promise..

A promise can be made at any time. A promisee is the person to whom a promise is made. A promissory note is a written promise to pay on demand or at a fixed future time a certain sum of money to, or to the order of, a specified person or to bearer. A breach of promise represents the violation of one's plighted word, as is used especially of a promise to marry. A vow is bigger. It's a promise formally made, and usually constitutes a contract between two parties, for instance a vow of friendship. A vow also carries the historical association of swearing an oath or invoking a deity, e.g.. "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again" (Scarlett O'Hara, Gone With the Wind).

God doesn't accept the altering promises! Lev 27:9-10 And if it be a beast, whereof men bring an offering unto the LORD, all that any man giveth of such unto the LORD shall be holy. He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good A man shall NOT break his word the Bible says Numbers 30:2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. A broken promise is a sin and will be judged by the Lord. God punishes the wicked! Leviticus 5:4-5 Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these. And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shallconfess that he hath sinned in that thing:

Matthew 18:19 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraided not; and it shall be given him. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. "What does the Bible say about keeping your vows / oaths?"

The story of Jephthah illustrates the foolishness of making vows without understanding the consequences. Before leading the Israelites into battle against the Ammonites, Jephthahdescribed as a mighty man of valormade a rash vow that he would give to the Lord whoever first came out of doors to meet him if he returned home as the victor. When the Lord granted him victory, the one who came out to meet him was his daughter. Jephthah remembered his vow and offered her to the Lord (Judges 11:29-40). Whether Jephthah should have kept this vow is dealt with in another article. What this account shows us is the foolishness of rash vows.

"What does the Bible say about keeping your vows / oaths?"
"Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. 14:10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison." (Matthew 14:7)

Matthew 5:34-37 "But I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by heaven . . . nor by the earth . . . . Neither shalt thou swear by thy head . . . . But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." James 5:12 ". . . swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation."

Any Contradictions???
Heb. 6:13-18, 7:21

PRINCIPLE:
True believers do not need to take an oath because of their character.

APPLICATION:

The oath of which Jesus speaks has to do with careless oaths. This passage does not prohibit all oaths of any kind. Even God Himself confirmed His promise by an oath (He 6:13-18). Jesus spoke under an oath (Mt 26:63, 64). Jesus prohibits flippant or careless oaths in daily speech. This commandment does not mean that we cannot take an oath in court. The Word of God does not prohibit taking oaths in court or an oath in marriage. Oaths are wrong when they deceive others. God Himself took oaths in the Bible (He 6:13-17).

Parable of Jesus
Title: THE OTHER PARABLE OF THE TWO BROTHERS, MT. 21:28-32.
Theme: The narratives of the kings reflect the same theme as the Parable of the Two Brothers: one did the will of God, the other did not. Purpose: To illustrate the effects of disobedience and to exhort the church to avoid the same mistakes of Israel

Parable of Jesus -Mt.21:28-32

1. On the surface the Parable of the Two Brothers is simple.

2. One son says he wont do what his father asked of him but changes his mind and does it; another says he will but doesnt.
3. It is a simple matter of who obeys and who doesnt. 4. Jesus uses the story to illustrate the difference between the religious leaders and the people who have sinned but repented.

5. At another levelnot so important for Jesus purposeswe have the motives behind each brother to figure out.
6. The dynamic between a father and his sons represents the relationship between Jesus and his people or God and his people. 7. The Old Testament narrative of the Kings of Israel and Judah illustrate an early version of this parable,
