Aim: To impart basic knowledge on evolution of cell, microscopy, cell structure, organelles, cell cycle and embryology

Theory
Unit I Evolution of cell and Microscopy History of cell science and techniques, Origin of life, Hierarchy in life- Process of evolution Fundamentals, types and applications of microscopy in cell biology. Unit II Cell structure Structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cellskinds of eukaryotic cells modifications, cell wall, extracellular matrix, biomembrane system and cytoskeleton network

Theory (contd.)
Unit III Cell organelles Ultra structure and functions of mitochondria, plastids, nucleus, ribosomes, endoplastic reticulum, Golgi bodies and lysosomes Unit IV Cell cycle Cell cycle Interphase: G1, S and G2, M phase: mitosis and cytokinesis, cell cycle control and programmed cell death Unit V Basics in embryology Spermatogenesis, oogenesis and fertilizationcleavage development - organogenesis

Practicals
Unit I Microscopy and prokaryotic cells Study of light microscopes, staining procedure, microscopic examination of prokaryotic cells Unit II Quantitation and Micrometry Quantitation of cells using Haemocytometer, Cellular micrometry Unit III Eukaryotic cells and organelles Microscopic preparation of plant and animal tissues, isolation of mitochondria and chloroplast from plant cell

Practicals (contd.)
Unit IV Cell cycle Identification of mitotic stages and meiotic stages. Unit V Cell culture Study of cell growth parameters.-Biological application-Plant cell culture. Practical Examination.

Cell cycle interphase and M phase 15. Cell cycle control and programmed cell death 16. Spermatogenesis, oogenesis and fertilization 17. Clevage- development and organogenesis

Practical Schedule
1. Study of light microscopes 2. Microscopic examination of various types of prokaryotic cells 3. Preparation of fixatives 4. Study of staining procedures 5. Staining of prokaryotic cells 6. Quantitation of cells using haemocytometer 7. Cellular micrometry 8. Microscopic preparations of plant tissues monocots

The students will know about the basic aspects of structure of the cell, cell organelles, its functions cell cycle and embryogenesis
