Earlier in time the people who lived in the area that became Mississippi included the Choctaw, Natchez and Chickasaw Indian Tribes. Spanish explorers arrived there in 1540. The French started the first permanent settlement in Mississippi in 1699. During the first half of the 19th century, Mississippi was the top cotton producer in the United States, and owners of large plantations depended on the labor of slaves. Mississippi left the Union in 1861 and fought against the U.S. Army. After the end of slavery, racial discrimination lasted in Mississippi, and the state was a battleground of the Civil Rights Movement in the 20th Century.
