Bhagavad Gita in context of Human Resource Management

SUBMITTED BY: Tanvi Gupta (20)

OBJECTIVE
The philosophy of Bhagavad-Gita should not be viewed from spiritual perspectives only but also as a guide in developing HRM effectiveness as HRM is culture specific

Bhagavad Gita and HRM

Shri Krishna gave not only spiritual enlightenment but also the art of self management, conflict management, stress, anger management, transformational leadership, motivation, goal setting and many others aspects of management which can be used as a guide to increase HRM effectiveness.

Emotional Management
1. Vta rga bhaya krodh man may mm uprit bahavo jna-tapas pt mad-bhvam gat. (4.10) 2. Klaibya m sma gama prtha naitatt vayy upapady ate kudra hdayad aur balya tyak tvottiha paratapa. (2.3) 3. r -bhagavn -uvca prajahti yad kmn sarvn prtha mano-gatn tmany-evtman- tua, sthita-prajas-tadocyate. (2.55)

Self Management

1. amo damas tapa auca kntir rjavam eva ca jna vijnam stikya brahma karma svabhva jam. (18.42)
2. aurya tejo dhtir dkya yuddhe cpy apalyanam dnam vara bhva ca ktra karma svabhva jam. (18.43)

Duty and Goal setting

1. Tasmd asakta satata krya karma samcara asakto hy caran karma param pnoti prua (3.19)
2. Yad yad carati rehas tat tad evetaro jana sa yat prama kurute lokas tad anuvartate. (3.21)

Transformational Leadership

After hearing 575 verses from Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad-Gita, Arjuna was motivated, energized and acted according to Sri Krishnas instruction. He (Arjuna) stood steady on the ground with bow and arrow in hand. He lifted his arms ready to fight the war. Sri Krishna demonstrated transformational HR leadership qualities in developing and guiding Arjuna to victory in the war.

Team Building

1. yath nadn bahavo ambu veg samudram evbhimukh dravanti tath tavm nara loka vr vianti vaktry abhivijvalanti. (11.28) 2. r bhagavn uvca klo smi loka kaya kt pravddho lokn samhartum iha pravtta te pi tv na bhaviyanti sarve ye vasthit pratyankeu yodh. (11.32)

Conflict Management
1. yadcch lbha satuo dvandvtto vimatsara sama siddhv asiddhau ca ktvpi na nibadhyate. (4.22) 2. cacala hi mana ka pramthi balavad dham tasyha nigraha manye vyoriva sudukaram. (6.34) 3. r bhagavn uvca asaaya mahbho mano durnigraha calam abhysena tu kaunteya vairgyea ca ghyate. (6.35)

Conclusion
Modern HR managers and consultants can benefit from the philosophy of Bhagavad-Gita, which can serve as a guide in HRM. Mere imitation of western HRM approaches may not be appropriate in the Indian (Asian) context due to differences in the cultural environment. Many new western HRM approaches will continue to emerge, however the Bhagavad-Gita has remained and will remain to be relevant and continue to contribute to HRM for many centuries to come.
