Investment Theory of Creativity

Asserts that creative thinkers are like good investors: They buy low and sell high. Creative people generate ideas that are like undervalued stocks, and are generally rejected by the public. When creative ideas are proposed, they are often viewed as bizarre, useless, and even foolish, and are summarily rejected From the investment view, then, the creative person buys low by presenting a unique idea and attempts to convince other people of its value. After convincing others that the idea is worthy, which increases the perceived value of the investment, the creative person sells high by leaving the idea to others and moving to another idea.

Loss of Creativity
We routinely witness creativity in young children, but it is hard to find in older children and adults Their creative potential has been suppressed by a society that encourages intellectual conformity. We begin to suppress children's natural creativity when we expect them to color within the lines in their coloring books.

Innovation
To renew or change INVENTION : Totally new product , service or process. EXTENSION : New use or different application of an already existing product, service ,or process. DUPLICATION : Creative replication of an existing concept. SYNTHESIS : Combination of existing concepts and factors into a new formulation or use.

Perhaps the most famous example of using an imaginative and even "crazy" perspective is that of Einstein visualizing himself riding a beam of light. That helped him create his theory of relativity. It's a great demonstration of how to develop creativity by using simple but powerful creative problem solving techniques.

Drivers of innovation
Frustration with the status quo A response to crisis A focus on prevention An emphasis on results Adaptation of technology An inclination to do the right thing

Idea
Should be good for market as well as for entrepreneur Should be manageable Should give satisfactory result

Rate of adoption of a new idea

1. Relative Advantage - is it better? 2. Compatibility - is it appropriate? 3. Complexity - is it understandable? 4. Trialability - can it be tested? 5. Observability - what does it look like?

Most innovations result from a conscious, purposeful search for new opportunities. Successful innovators use both left and right sides of the brain. Most successful innovations are simple and focused.
