Claytronics is one of the most revolutionary branch of Comp-Mech-Elec Engineering. We can say that it is advance branch of artificial intelligence.

Claytronics is a branch which deals with creating small robots which can have their own brain so that they can think and take decisions just like a living organism. The research on this technology is being conducted at Carnegie Mellon University and is being funded by Intel.

"Claytronics" is related to reconfiguration of


nanoscale robots designed to form much larger scale machines or mechanisms.

Claytronics creates dynamic, 3-Dimensional display


of electronic information.

The basic unit of claytronics are Catoms that is claytronics atoms. Also known as "programmable matter. Catoms:- Sub-millimeter computers that will eventually have the ability to move around, communicate with each others, change color, and electro-statically connect to other catoms to form different shapes.

Catoms are self-reconfigurable robots is that a robot could change shape depending on a task .

Operating as a snake-like robot to wiggle through tight spaces or a cellphone that could reform itself into a laptop and back into a cell phone again.

Power is supply throughout ensemble via metal contact rings. Only few catoms connected to to draw power, when these catoms are energized, which gets trigges and distribute power throught the catoms.

Movements amongst catoms is due to electrostatic or electromagnetic force. A catom will move itself by energizing a particular magnet and Cooperating with neighboring catom.

Since catoms are tiny computers and it also have microprocessor, thus co-operation among all hardware is done via existing microprocessor technology. A silicon chip transmitted data at 3.2 gigabits per second from and to a microprocessor using optical signals

There cab be billions of catoms in ensemble (group of catoms). Catoms may be in motion. Infrared sensors allow for communication. To organize action of billions of tiny catoms none is better than the use of algorithm and programming languages. 1. MELD 2. LDP

Meld addresses need to write code for an ensemble of catoms rather than writing instruction for each individual catoms. This is logical programming which follows heuristic approach to controls the catoms This is done by declaring position of each catoms. Meld manage contacts as process of rulesolving. Each catom engage its contact until it sasties all rules of physical relationship.

LDP (Locally Distributed Predicates) provides a means of distributed patterns matching. LDP enables programmer to address set of variables with Boolean logic that matches paired conditions and enables the program to search for larger patterns of activity and behavior among groups of modules. This will help for taking particular shape.

Charge in each catoms enhance colors and shading in the same way as the pixels activate image on video screen.

Each catom have computing capacity to implement algorithm that instruct to localize its position in relation to other catom. This information initiate catom to initiate motion and change its alignment until they reach their location.
