During socialization, a family teaches the young

child what is accepted and unacceptable

behaviour. Unfortunately, some children and adults are not socialized properly and everybody does not follow the norms nor obey the laws of their society. This gives rise to

social issues

A Social Issue is a condition which is widespread and contains behaviour which a large number of people think is desirable or

unacceptable.

Teenage Pregnancy

Street Children
ALTERNATIVE Life STYLE

Substance Abuse
Juvenile Delinquency Sexually Transmitted Diseases Child Abuse

Suicide Incest Poverty Desertion

Domestic Violence
Trafficking in Persons Care and Concern of the aged and those with Special Needs

Is the issue considered to be desirable in your country? Does the issue affect a large number of people in your country? Do a large number of people in your country recognize the issue as a problem for the society? Do people in your country think that the issue can be solved easily?

Influence Of Contemporary Social Issues On Caribbean Family Life

Use of the familys scarce financial resources

to rehabilitate a family member.

Conflict and eventually breakup in the family due to these social issues(promiscuity, substance abuse, incest, domestic violence).

Alienation may lead to an attitude of

indifference among family members and as a

result, they may accept the problems rather

than deal with them(poverty or substance abuse).

Other family members may learn the negative behaviour and the cycle will continue.

The moral or self-esteem of the family maybe affected, as the members become alienated

by other members of the society-example

A.I.D.S or Poverty.

The health of the family may be affected.

Some children may be deprived of their

parents, for example through imprisonment

for crime, death from A.I.D.S or the desertion

of both parents.

Strategies Government uses to deal with Social Issues

Educating the citizens on the causes and effects of the problems/ issues in order to bring about a

change of attitudes.

Enacting legislation with heavy penalties to

discourage people from encouraging in some of them-examples: domestic violence, substance abuse.

Prosecuting offenders who are involved in social issues which are of a criminal nature.

Providing assistance to victims, for example, welfare payments to the poor, sheltered homes for

battered women and hospices for A.I.D.S sufferers.

Consulting with and providing resources/

assistance to Non-Government Organizations

and other organizations which are dealing with

social issues.

Seeking international technical and financial assistance to deal with the problems, for

example, funding for A.I.D.S awareness

programmes.

Creating more employment opportunities to

prevent people from becoming involved in

crime and also alleviate poverty.

Providing home help and institutionalized care for the aged and those with special needs.
