Good stores are made, not born.

Gone but Not Forgotten a Freedlander Legacy depicts the origin and growth of a unique family owned business for more than a century. One of the last independent department stores in the country, Freedlanders was established as The Buffalo One Price Clothing House in 1884. Founder David Freedlander stood by the practice of a one-price policy that became the standard in retail stores. This memoir takes the reader on a journey from the days of the pack peddler to 1989 when Harold Freedlander, Davids grandson, retired and sold the store. Ann Freedlander Hunt, the fourth and last generation of the H. Freedlander Company shares an affectionate and historical view of her familys department store. She shares the continued growth and success through principled business practices. Customers recall the liberal return policy and the personal service they received. The success of this retail enterprise created customer loyalty that spanned generations. People from all over Northeast Ohio enjoyed the benefits of the stores contributions to the community and beyond. This tribute takes the reader behind the counter, on buying trips, and across the years as happy customers and former employees share their fond, funny, and touching memories of a bygone era.
