INTRODUCTION

CARBON NANOTUBE:

Carbon Nanotubes are hollow cylinders of graphite carbon atoms. These tubes are on the nanoscale , which is so small that 10,000 of them could fit in the width of 1 human hair.

TYPES OF CARBON NANO-TUBE

Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes:


Generally narrower than the multi walled tubes, with diameters typically in the range 1-2 run, and tend to be curved rather than straight.

Multi walled Carbon Nano-tube

Multi-walled nano tubes consist of multiple layers of graphite rolled in on themselves to form a tube shape.

Its assumed that the climbing abilities of the gecko are based on the weak molecular van der waals forces, which become strongly adhesive through individual tiny hair and nanoscopic size .the contact of 10 percent of the hair is just enough to carry the gecko.

Their use in the joining industry would also be possible, where the adhesive areas would be detachable again and no glue would be required any more in future.

Driving comfort through switchable material

In the design of an automotive chassis, there is always a conflict between comfort and safety. A soft chassis is considered comfortable, a hard one on the other hand, is considered safe The core of these adjustable damping systems is the so-called magneto- or electro-rheologic fluid, which is classified as a smart material. In these fluids the viscosity can be changed instantly, stepless and reversibly by applying a magnetic or electric field

The effective viscosity is thus increased, which means that the flow resistance of the fluid rises. If the magnetic or electric field is removed, the chains decompose and the fluid becomes thin again

This change can happen very quickly. In milliseconds a fluid can be transformed into a tenacious gel. A special oil of fludicon can switch between fluid and solid states 1500 times per second. Classical application fields in the automobile are dampers, actuators and gears. In the field of actuators, the dream of active chassis could soon come true.

Piezo - ceramic materials allow realizing higher forces and speeds in

comparison to conventional actuators for fuel injection and thereby clearly reduce consumption , pollutants emission and noise, using the piezoelectric effect to enable the opening and closing mechanisms of the injection valve.

Reducing Emission from Automobile using carbon nanotubes:

This technique deals with using the exhaust gases for the manufacture of single walled carbon nanotubes, so that the dumping of the filtered harmful particles in other medium can be easily avoided.

Appropriate technology: Laser Ablation Laser is used to vaporize a carbon atoms in an oven at 1200c. Oven is filled with helium and argon gas. Pressure is maintained at 500 Torre.

Ceramic nano filter

The material developed for use in fuel cells has shown another use for itself. The ceramic material, called LSCF (LanthanumStrontium-Cobalt-Ferric Oxide) is able to extract pure oxygen and use it to burn methane. After combustion, the carbon dioxide is extracted, separated through tubes into carbon and steam, and the carbon is recycled. Lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF), also called lanthanum strontium cobaltite ferrite is a ceramic material of the ferrite group. It is a mixture of lanthanum(III) oxide, strontium oxide, cobalt oxide and iron oxide (cobalt iron oxide).

Conclusion:

Due to the small size of nano-materials, their physical/chemical properties (e.g. stability, hardness,conductivity,reactivity, optical sensitivity, melting point, etc.) can be manipulated to improve the overall properties of conventional material. Some manufacturers are currently using nano-magnetic fluids in shock absorbers to increase vibration control efficiency. Sensors based on nano-layer structures find applications in engine control, airbag, anti-lock brake and electronic stability program systems. Nanotechnology is influencing the auto industry in big scale now and is still developing to deliver features, products and processes that are almost unimaginable today.
