What is POVERTY???
Oxford dictionary defines poverty as, Lacking sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable or normal in a society

UN defines poverty as a denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It means lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society. It means not having enough to feed and cloth a family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having the land on which to grow ones food or a job to earn ones living, not having access to credit. It means insecurity, powerlessness and exclusion of individuals, households and communities. It means susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living on marginal or fragile environments, without access to clean water or sanitation

What About the Indian Govt??


The Planning Commission defines the Poverty line in India as a daily per capita income of Rs.28.35 in urban areas and Rs. 22.42 in rural areas

Really??

It hardly gets a family an average meal twice a day

The GDP of India has risen almost ten times between 1986 and 2012. The percent of people living below the poverty line decreased from 40% to 25 %.

Though the Indian economy has grown considerably, the distribution of wealth has been uneven. A large number of people in this country are still poor.
