The boys have an argument over what to title the show. Paul wanted to call it The hedonic treadmill of Jiu Jitsu but kip insisted nobody would know what that meant. After talking to too many people Paul realized maybe calling it something else would be prudent. The hedonic treadmill basically states that we tend to revert back to our set point level of happiness no matter the outside influences of our lives. What this means to us in BJJ is that no matter what we’ve accomplished, our happiness is the same. So if we have a low set point of happiness...or a pessimistic view of life, we’re destined to always think out Jiu Jitsu isn’t good enough. We stole another article from Paul Elliot from simplebjj.com and obliterated it on the show. Paul went into great detail about how the hedonic treadmill infiltrates your Jiu Jitsu goals through learned helplessness. It’s all fine and good to know that this exists and that you’re in fact perfectly normal for thinking the way you do. But what good would it be without a solution or two?Paul goes on to talk about looking at past wins as well as envisioning your “best possible self” to help you raise your happiness set point and get over your constant feelings of dread about how you’re not getting any better.
