n the realm of bird conservation, the tale of the Bald Eagle’s resurgence stands as a powerful testament to the enduring strength of nature and the impact of dedicated individuals. Return to the Sky by ina Morris vividly chronicles her journey of determination, ingenuity, and hope that directly contributed to the Bald Eagle’s comeback. Tis book highlights how a single persons unwavering passion and dedication can drive remarkable recovery and restoration for an entire species. As the CEO of the National Audubon Society, I have the privilege of hearing and witnessing countless stories of individuals committed to protecting our natural world. ina’s journey stands out as particularly inspiring. Her devotion to the Bald Eagle, a species emblematic of suc-cessful American wildlife recovery efforts, is extraordinary.Growing up along the Potomac River, I never saw a Bald Eagle in the wild. However, these majestic birds are commonly sighted along the Potomac today, and they are a beacon of renewal and hope. Tis transformation did not happen by accident. It is the result of concerted efforts by passionate advocates like ina, whose work underscores the importance of preserving our natural heritage for future generations. Te revival of the Bald Eagle mirrors Audubons mission: to protect birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow. Audubon’s initia-tives align around a focused effort to bend the bird curve, aiming to halt and ultimately reverse the decline of bird populations across the  Americas. ina’s dedication to seven eaglets is a shining example of this effort in action. Trough her project, she demonstrated how targeted intervention, combined with community support and scientific knowl-edge, can lead to the recovery of a species on the brink of extinction.  ina’s story is evidence of the power of focused conservation efforts in

bending the bird curve, showing us that this vital goal is achievable with commitment and collaboration.

also reminds us of the critical role of community and grassroots action in environmental work. ina’s efforts were not  just about saving the birds but also about engaging and inspiring a com-munity to rally around a common cause. Tis aligns with Audubon’s belief in the transformative power of individual actions united by a shared purpose. Every person’s contribution, no matter how small, can lead to monumental changes when we work together toward a common goal. ina’s story exemplifies how grassroots movements can amplify individual efforts, creating a ripple effect that leads to substantial, long-lasting impacts on conservation and the environment. As women in science, ina and I have both navigated a field histori-cally dominated by men. When I entered graduate school a decade after  ina, the field was still predominantly male, but progress had been made thanks to pioneers like her who opened doors for others. ina’s achieve-ments exemplify the invaluable contributions of female conservationists  who work to protect our planet, overcoming significant barriers along the way. Her legacy not only celebrates these contributions but also inspires us to continue to strive for greater inclusivity and recognition of diverse voices in our efforts to protect nature.
Return to the Sky
is more than an account of environmental triumph; it is a call to action. At a time of urgent climate and biodiversity cri-ses, this book challenges each of us to examine our surroundings and consider how we can contribute to the sustainability of our planet. Te stakes have never been higher, and our window for meaningful action is rapidly closing. Tis book goes beyond recounting the past; it aims to inspire future generations of environmental stewards. ina and others like her have blazed a trail, proving that one person’s steadfast dedication can create historic change. Te path she has forged underscores the importance of supporting and empowering the next generation of scientists and conservationists. ina’s compelling narrative and tireless work serve as a powerful example of what can be achieved through dedication and passion.
