Brazil Wind Power Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2017 TechSci Research

Executive Summary

Wind Energy all over the world has been a rage over the years and it continues to show the same phenomenon today also. This is primarily on account of high power demand and consumption patterns globally which has outmaneuvered every other source of energy to fully satisfy the growing power needs. The growing population, increasing industrialization and rising standard of living has further exacerbated the power problem. One such nation where the power problem had just begun to raise its head is Brazil. It was not a blackout, said Edison Lobo, merely a temporary interruption of the electricity supply. Brazils energy minister was speaking on February 4 th, 2011 after nearly XXXX Million people across eight states in the countrys north-east had spent most of the night without power. The strain is starting to show. Brazil suffered XXXX big blackouts during 2010, up from XXXX in 2008. In big cities short, localized power cuts are becoming common. This calls for introduction and development of other sources of energy. The burgeoning economy of Brazil which till now was mainly and largely dependent on Hydro energy for it power needs has, of late, started looking at Wind Energy so as to meet its ever growing huge consumption. Being the largest country in Latin America in terms of size and population, it is also the largest electricity market in the region. In the early 2000s, a drought in Brazil that cut water to the country's hydroelectric dams prompted severe energy shortages underscoring Brazil's pressing need to diversify away from water power. Although still nascent as compared to the size in the European countries or in the US, wind energy has become a priority for Brazil. Brazils electricity sector is largely deregulated. Power generating companies which are mostly large government-controlled companies, sell their electricity to distributors via auctions.

Distribution is primarily operated by the private sector, whereas transmission is both publicly and privately owned. State-owned Eletrobras controls a large part of generation and distribution capacity. Institutionally, the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) oversees the entire power sector and is responsible for policy setting. The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL), operating under the jurisdiction of the MME, regulates and controls the generation, transmission and distribution of power. With excellent wind resources, a rapidly growing economy and strong government incentives for renewable energy projects, Brazil presents tremendous opportunities for wind energy. After a few early developments in the first half of previous decade (200010), the Brazilian wind market actually took off in 2006 when it added more than XXXX MW of installed capacity. During 2000 11, the country witnessed tremendous growth in terms of cumulative installed capacity which grew at a CAGR of XXXX percent to reach XXXX MW in 2011. Currently, Brazil has more than XXXX wind farms across the country and more in the pipeline that are expected to come online in the short term. By 2017, the total installed capacity is expected to reach XXXX GW growing at a CAGR of XXXX percent during 201117. With a growing industry, the country is expected to experience several opportunities such as becoming a hub for wind energy and a leading manufacturer in Latin America. As a result of significant growth of this industry, it is expected that there would be thousands of direct and indirect jobs for its citizens over the years. With significant support government in terms of promising initiatives and attractive incentives, the Brazilian wind energy industry is poised to grow in the future.
