Methods of Test for Palm Kernel Products: Determination of Shell and Dirt in Palm Kernel 1.

0 Scope This test specifies a method for the determination of shell and dirt in palm kernels. 2.0 Referenced Documents The following method contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this MPOB Test Method. For dated reference, subsequent amendments to or revision of, any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this MPOB Test Method are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent edition of the referenced documents. For undated references, the latest edition of the document referred to applied. 3.0 Definition For the purpose of this MPOB Test Method, the following shall apply. 3.1 Shell and Dirt Non-oleaginous foreign bodies (for example wood, pieces of metal, stones, seed of other non-oleaginous plants), fragments of stalks, fibres and shells. 4.0 Principle Separation of the impurities by sorting into shell and dirt from the kernel. Determination of the mass. 5.0 Apparatus Usual laboratory apparatus and, in particular, the following. 5.1 Tweenzers or other suitable instruments. 5.2 Analytical balance, capable of weighing to an accuracy of 0.1 g. 6.0 Sampling It is important that the laboratory receives a sample which is truly representative and has not been damaged or changed during transport or storage. Sampling is not part of the method specified in this MPOB Test Method. A recommended sampling method is given in MPOB Test Method k2.1: 2004. 7.0 Preparation of Test Sample Prepare the sample in accordance with ther procedure below. 8.0 Expression of Result 8.1 Weigh (5.2) accurately about 1 kg of the sample and spread the material on a clean surface. 8.2 Remove and separate (5.1) all foreign matters such as dirt, fibre, stones etc. Separate the kernels, half cracked and cracked nuts, and loose shell. Remove the shell from the half cracked and uncracked nuts and add to the loose shell and foreign matter. Weigh the shell and dirt together. The kernels may be retained for the determination of moisture and volatile matter. 9.0 Expression of results Express the shell and dirt content as a percentage by mass of the kernels as received.

Where,

m1 is the mass of the shells and dirt, in grams; and m2 is the mass of the test portion, in grams Take as the result the arithmetic mean of two determinations. Express the result to one decimal place. 10.0 Test report The test report shall specify a) The method in accordance with which sampling was carried out,if known; b) The method used; c) The test result(s) obtained; and d) If the repeatability has been checked, the final quoted result obtained. It shall also mention all operating details in this MPOB Test Method, or regarded as optional, together with details of any incidents which may have influenced the test result(s). The test report shall include all information necessary for the complete identification of the sample.
