Lesson Plan EDTECH 541 Dana Fredwell Plant WebQuest Introduction:

Students will learn the basic parts of a plant, (stem, leaf, fruit, flower, roots, pollen) by participating in a fun WebQuest with, simulations, games, and interesting facts.

Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: Science 3rd grade Objectives: Students will be able to name the parts of a plant and describe their functions. Students will be able to describe the growth of a plant from seed to fruit.

Standards Addressed: (Missouri Grade Level Expectations)

Science Strand 3 1A Describe the basic needs of most plants (i.e., air, water, light, nutrients, and temperature 1B Recognize plants progress through life cycles of seed germination, growth and development, reproduction, and death 1C Sequence and describe the stages in the life cycle of a flowering plant Sequence and describe the stages in the life cycle of a flowering plant 1D Identify the major organs (roots, stems, flowers, leaves) and their functions in vascular plants (e.g., absorption, transport, reproduction) (Do NOT assess the term vascular)

Identify and relate the similarities and differences between plants and their offspring (i.e., seedlings)

Relative Advantage: Students want to work through the process so

they can play games, and create a 3D pop-up book.

Timeline: Two-Three 50-minute class periods. The videos can be shown as whole class instruction then students can work through the rest in small groups.

Materials: Students will need a copy of the rubric, computers, and a printer to print screenshots. Grouping Strategies: Students will work in groups of two or three. Learning Activities: Students will view the videos on the start page of the plant Web Quest. Students will dissect a plant virtually putting it into the correct categories. Students will view the plant parts with a virtual magnifying glass to learn what each parts function is. Students will take a quiz and continue to take it until all answers are correct then take and print a screenshot. Students will view an experiment using celery then do the actual experiment in class, viewing the results at the end of the day. Students will view a simulation of a tomato plant growing from seed to fruit. Students will participate in a simulation growing a plant with light, water, and heat. Then take the quiz and print the screenshot. Students will learn about carnivorous plants and

weird plants to learn interesting facts. Assessment: Students will create online 3D pop-up books in their groups. Students will write at least three things they have learned in our online group notebook. Students will self assess with the rubric then staple screenshots to the rubric. Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: Students can work in their groups until the assessment then it can be adapted to the individual student. References:
