he Bachrodt Charter Academy library makeover was revealed on May 15, 2012. Over 100 Target team members volunteered their time to make the grand opening a success. Heart of America, a nationwide nonprofit organization that supports community, service and literacy, coordinated the transformation with Target. Bachrodt Charter Academy was the only school in the South Bay se-

lected for this honor and is one of 32 schools in the entire United States who have ever received this grant. The library received 5,000 new books, 10 iPads, and each child received seven books to take home. Books were also sent home for siblings that are not yet attending school. Second Harvest donated 20 pounds of food per child and will donate 20 lbs. of food per month, per child for the entire 2012-2013 school year. Congratulations Bachrodt Charter Academy!

Volunteers align a tiled mural designed by students, now on display in front of the school office.

ou may have noticed white markings on Gish Road near the intersections of Arnold Ave and Forrestal Ave, and Sonora Ave at Keoncrest Ave. The markings are road changes that include the addition of sets of chokers and crosswalks. Chokers are curb extensions that narrow a street by widening the sidewalk or planting strip. Physical obstructions like road chokers force two-way road users to slow down. The crosswalk at San Pedro and Gish will be moved to Gish and Forrestal. Sonora Ave and Keoncrest Ave. intersection will include a crosswalk and a handicap ramp. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer.

About Recycle Saturdays

CATHY BACA Every second Saturday of the month is Recycle Saturday in Rosemary Gardens. Volunteers for Rosemary Gardens Neighborhood Association collect recyclables and take them to the local recycle center for money. This helps RGNA fund various activities for our neighborhood. Materials donated for our pick up can include aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, and newspaper. We ask that materials be bagged or bundled for easy pick up. Signs are posted in the neighborhood a few days before to remind everyone to put their recyclables out at the curb by 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The RGNA recycle program benefits the whole neighborhood. On average the materials collected raise $50-$60 a month, and last year we raised over $600. This money is used to help fund our annual picnic, ice cream social and Spring and Autumn yard sales. This money also funds our newsletter, the Rosemary Gardens Neighborly. Volunteers are an essential part of this valuable fundraising program. We are in need of volunteers who can collect the recyclables once a month. Being ready and out the door on a Saturday morning isnt always easy, but I find it is a great way to begin a productive Saturday. In order to attract more volunteers, beginning on August 11th we will meet at my house, 1369 San Juan Ave. for coffee and snacks at 8:30 am. Then we will begin collecting materials in the neighborhood at 9:00 a.m. Usually it takes about two hours to collect the materials and take them to the recycling center. With more people helping, this time could be cut in half. Volunteering for recycle Saturday is a great way to meet people in the neighborhood and help raise money to keep our RGNA sponsored activities alive. If you are interested in volunteering, meet us at 1369 San Juan Ave. for some coffee, conversation, and recycling fun.

Aircraft flight tracking

The Mineta San Jos International Flight Tracking System, WebTrak, allows you to watch the movement of flights and air traffic patterns within the greater San Jose region. The WebTrak system also uses noise sensors that measure the volume of the neighborhood in decibels. These flight tracks, although taken from actual radar data, are not in real time. There is a delay of 10 minutes. This can be a useful tool if you notice an unusual overflight in the neighborhood and need to gather flight information for reporting purposes.

Street Sweeping
Dont forget neighborhood street sweeping is every third Tuesday of the month. Please have your car off the streets between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The next two street sweeping days are July 17 and Aug. 21. One parked car equals nearly three car lengths of space that cant be swept because the street sweeper must leave room to avoid it. Street sweepers drive around piles left in the street to avoid rocks or other unseen items that can damage their equipment. Questions or complaints about your street sweeping? Call Customer Service at (408) 535-3500 to get more information about street sweeping.
