I recently I had the opportunity to do some long range shooting under the guidance of my good friend Stan Pate. Stan is the captain of Team Savage and has many world and national championship titles to his credit at distances out to 1,000 yards (F Class). I couldnt think of a better person to show me the ropes and how to hit a target at long distances. In reality, Stan did the hard part, he calculated the ballistics: target distance, ambient temperature, elevation and read the wind. All I had to do was pull the trigger. While reading and adjusting appeared to be easy for Stan, I was amazed at how easily he could put me on a target at 1,220 yards and be able to hit it again and again with a stock Savage rifle and some good handloads. We were in the high desert shooting a video and I was so impressed with the consistency of hitting the 18-inch metal target, that I suggested that everyone on the video crew give it a try too. First the sound man, then the camera man and so on. When we were done, every person on that crew had hit that 1,220-yard target on the first or second shot. And this was a stock (unmodified) factory rifle mounted on a rickety wooden cable spool we used as a shooting bench. Amazing! It truly is a testament to the design of the Savage bolt-action rifle and, to an even greater extent, the skill and dedication of so many Savage employees that make these rifles, day in and day out. Ive said it many times there is no one thing responsible for the accuracy of our rifles. Its everything and everyone who, together, make it work.

There is a science to building an accurate barrel. The bulk of that science leans on machinery and experienced operators. The straightness of the bore, the uniformity of the rifling geometry, the concentricity of the chamber and the exactness of the crown all rely on consistent, dependable and specialized machinery. Equally important are experienced, trusted and specialized operators. Savage proudly employs both. For this reason, each and every Savage centerfire barrel from the one going on a Team Savage competitors F Class rifle to the one going on your kids first deer rifle is checked and if needed, hand straightened by the same person and with the same commitment to perfection. Thats consistency. And what is accuracy if not consistency?

The accuracy of a rifle can be looked at like a complex equation. The sum of the parts determines the overall accuracy. No single element of the equation is independent of another. The most accurate barrel in the world is nothing more than a metal pipe if its not properly married to the action and a perfectly joined barrel and action depend on proper bedding (see page 4 for details) to deliver pinpoint accuracy. Typically, headspace (the distance from the face of the closed bolt of a firearm to the surface in the barrel chamber on which the cartridge case seats) is discussed in terms of what is acceptable in order to maintain safety in the face of insufficient or excessive headspace and the resulting pressures. Industry standards (SAAMI) for firearms and ammunition are set within acceptable tolerance ranges for safety and, clearly, Savage is committed to safety. However, our commitment to accuracy has caused us to look at headspace in another light. Rather than working to fall within an acceptable range, Savage engineered a lock-nut system that allows each and every single action to attach to its specific barrel with absolute zero tolerance for unparalleled accuracy. While each barrel-to-action union is 100% precise, Savage went one step further to assure 100-percent locking lug engagement. A floating bolt head enables complete engagement of the bolt face with the cartridge.
Because the Savage floating bolt head is designed to allow a few thousandths of an inch of movement, it can adjust itself for a perfect fit only typically found with hand-lapped locking lugs.

The energy released when a cartridge is fired creates a series of harmonic waves that travel the length of the barrel. While it may sound counterintuitive, the movement that accompanies these waves factors into the accuracy equation and must necessarily be embraced. For these reasons, any rifle with respectable accuracy will have a free floating barrel and a firmly bedded action. Free floating is an absolute. Either the barrel is untouched by the stock or its not. However, a bedded action can come in many shapes and forms. Traditionally, an action is secured to the stock by one or two screws that pull the action directly downward into the stock. This bedding method provides excellent rigidity on a single, linear plane up and down. The new AccuStockTM from Savage consists of a rigid rail system that is firmly embedded in the stock throughout the length of the fore-end of the rifle. Rather than unidirectionally engaging the action at one or two points, the AccuStockTM engages the action three dimensionally along its entire length.

All of the accuracy advantages built into a Savage barrel, action and stock are delivered into the shot by the shooter himself. The engagement point? The Savage AccuTrigger. Most triggers found in firearms produced today have a very heavy pull. The reason is quite simple: liability. Because manufacturers cannot afford to build firearms with triggers that could accidentally discharge, theyve resorted to heavy trigger pulls. Even though factory triggers can usually be adjusted to some extent, such adjustments can create unsafe conditions and usually void the warranty. Savage challenged its engineering team to design a completely new trigger system that gives shooters what they want an easily adjustable trigger with a crisp release and no creep. This project took several years, but our revolutionary AccuTriggerTM meets all of these objectives. The Savage AccuTriggerTM gives the flexibility to set trigger pull to individual preferences without having to pay a gunsmith to adjust it. Even when adjusted to its lowest setting, the AccuTriggerTM is completely safe. When maintained and adjusted as intended, the AccuTriggerTM cannot accidentally discharge during normal use, even if it is jarred or dropped. Furthermore, the crisp, clean, light trigger pull allows the shooter to maximize the rifles accuracy potential. A teardrop three-position safety is an additional feature on centerfire rifles with the AccuTriggerTM . This provides better acquisition of the safety button and operates more smoothly and quietly. The AccuTriggerTM is designed with an integrated AccuReleaseTM that must be completely depressed or the rifle cannot fire. While the trigger is being pulled, the AccuReleaseTM is intentionally depressed, which unblocks the sear and allows the rifle to discharge. Adjusting the AccuTriggerTM is easy. Simply remove the stock and rotate the return spring using the tool supplied with the rifle. The AccuTriggerTM has a single adjustment location and is designed so it cannot be adjusted below the minimum setting.

The Savage Law Enforcement Series is now the official precision rifle of the New York State Police Mobile Response Team. Every heavy contour barrel in this series is button rifled for enhanced accuracy and features a recessed target crown. There is no need to lap the bolt, because the floating bolt head ensures both lugs have full bearing on the locking surface. And the headspace on every rifle is set at absolute minimum. Standard features in this series include an oversized bolt handle that permits rapid acquisition for follow-up shots. The rifles on this page are for the accuracy obsessed who want to test their skills on the ultimate playing field: the 1,000-yard range. The 12 Benchrest is for 1000-yard benchrest competitions. It has a 29 ultra-heavy barrel, dual-port action and Target AccuTrigger. Its laminated stock features a wide forend and a buttstock that is sculpted for a bench rest. Chambered in .308 Win, 6.5 x 284 Norma, and 6mm Norma BR. The Palma is for the hardcore few who prefer to shoot their 1000-yard competitions with iron sights (not included). It is also tapped for regular folks who prefer to mount a scope. It features a multiadjustable, laminated stock, Target AccuTrigger and 30-inch tapered heavy barrel. Chambered in .308 Palma only (Palma 95 chamber). Our 12 F/TR has a slightly rounded forend with bipod rail, adjustable cheekpiece, and is chambered in .308 Win. or 223 Remington. The F Class has a three-inch wide ventilated forend with flat bottom, flat buttstock, and is chambered in 6.5 x 284 Norma, as well as 6mm Norma BR The first factory rifle to offer these calibers.
