Goal-directed Instructional Design Plan - Centers of Triangles (Geometry) Author - Ryan Fernandes, Byron Area Schools A problem or a need

d Students will be presented with the following problem: Three large cities, each with a small local hospital for minor needs and emergencies, require an advanced medical facility for transplants, research, and major issues. The cities are planning a shared medical facility to meet the needs of all three cities. You have been hired to determine the best location for this facility.

A real-world performance There are several points of a triangle which can be classified as the center of a triangle, each with different properties. Students will examine two of these centers, the incenter and the circumcenter to solve the real-world problem below.

An instructional objective a. Construct the Perpendicular Bisectors of a triangle and find the Circumcenter. b. Construct the Angle Bisectors of a triangle and find the Incenter. c. Analyze, Evaluate and Argue the merits of their location for a hospital.

A set of essential content Students will be choose 3 cities in Michigan and identify a point that would be the best location for a hospital that can meet the needs of all 3 cities. Students will have the option of using physical or online tools to identify the location. Students should realize that online tools are easier and more functional than physical ones. Students will be performing constructions and analyzing triangles and circles.

An evaluation consisting of a test or observation After investigating their chosen cities, students will be assigned 3 cities and find the best location for a hospital. Using the techniques discussed as a class.

A method to help participants learn Students will choose 3 cities. Students will use and explore the properties of triangle centers. Students will identify and justify the best location for a hospital. Students will be assessed on finding the best location for 3 given cities.

Motivation: Meaningfulness Students can select 3 cities that have some meaning to them or that they have visited.

Pleasant consequences Students may find that a circle can be used to find the best location with the hospital at the center.

Novelty This assignment can be modified to find the best location of a fast food restaurant, fire station or any other service that has some meaning to them between 3 locations.

Socialization - Students can argue why they believe their location is best via Twitter, through the Facebook group and on the forum for this lesson on the teachers website.

Audience Age - Geometry students in 9-12 grades.

Skill level - Students should be familiar with the software and programs mentioned below. Students should know how to login and use the school computers.

Prerequisite knowledge - Students have learned about the properties of triangles and their centers. Students have also learned about circles and their radius. Students have learned constructions using a compass and straight edge.

Technology Needs Computers (PC or Mac), Software (Google Maps, Google Earth or MapQuest), Programs (Cabri, Geometers Sketch Pad or GeoMaster), printers, Equipment (Flashdrive, Compasses and Straight Edges), Accounts (Google Docs, Twitter and Facebook) Others (Printers, Internet Access, Time in the Computer Lab)
