Photo Scavenger Hunt Using Instagram

Grade Level: Moderate needs 6th grade students with Special Education Services Subject: Life Skills Training - Occupational Therapy Prepared by: Phillip Salvador, OTR Overview and Purpose: In this lesson students will practice social skills development and learn to use mobile technology by documenting staff members and classroom environments. Students will use an iTouch or iPad and Instagram-a photo sharing application. The purpose of this exercise is to help students familiarize themselves with a new learning environment and introduce themselves to school staff. Objectives: By the end of this lesson students will learn: Knowledge Level: to input captions of at least 5 names and 4 places within Instagram Comprehension Level: to operate a mobile device effectively by launching the application, taking a picture, choosing a filter, and adding a caption Application Level: to locate and identify at least 3 school staff on his or her schedule and locate the cafeteria, gym, school office, and home room within the school environment Knowledge Level: to present learned information to a small group Materials Needed: iTouch or iPad Instagram (free photo sharing application) Wifi connection Information: Students will borrow a classroom iTouch or iPad with Instagram application pre-installed. Students will also have a student account created by the classroom instructor. Depending on the student, a classroom aide may be needed to help the student navigate and operate the mobile device. Classroom teachers will be notified by OT or Moderate Needs Teacher before the activity to accommodate students assignments.

Verification of skills: 1. The student will be able to demonstrate the following: launch the application, demonstrate taking a photo, choose a filter, and add a caption. 2. The student has taken a total of 7 photos (3 school staff, cafeteria, gym, school office, and home room. 3. The student has labeled each photo correctly using a complete sentence.

Activity: (10-15 mins) The instructor will explain the Instagram photo scavenger hunt activity and demonstrate the use of Instagram on the IPad to a group of 5-6 students. Once explanation is complete, students will take their iTouch or iPad and practice taking a picture and correctly label the home room and home room instructor. Once student has demonstrated proficiency, the student will then use the device throughout the day to complete the assignment. (25-30 mins) Toward the end of the day, the instructor will gather the devices and have students present their photos and read their captions to a small group.
