er 24, 2004 SUB: WATER WASH DETAILS AND PROCEDURE: Source of information - Manuals and Guideline of BHEL Required quality of water: 1. Less than 100 PPM dissolved solids 2. Less than 25 PPM sodium + potassium 3. A ph of 6 to 8 4. Recommended water temp is 82+ deg. C. Mixture of detergent and water should be 1 part of detergent Water wash sequence: 1. Ensure that wheelspace temp. is below 82 deg C. 2. Ensure that water temp. is above 82 deg C ( it is preferred that both water & wheelspace are at same temp for better performance). 3. Clean the IGV manually using detergent. 4. Check the spray pattern through nozzles for any choking by running water pump 5. Run the water pump for 5 mins. This will be helpful to clean IGV in closed condition.. 6. Fill the detergent tank with 20 ltrs. Of detergent + 80 ltrs. of water. 7. Keep stroke of detergent pump at 100 %. 8. Ensure the following before starting the unit: Drain of the inlet plenum is open. TK fans are running 5th stage outlet (air for bearing sealing ) is blind flame detector valves are closed close air supply to APU close air supply to 20 CB ( bleed valve ) close air supply to CPD gauge & Transmitter all drains are open and 4 part of water

9. Bring machine to cranking speed using water wash ON selection (Ensure that IGV is full open after achieving cranking speed). 10. Ensure that inlet to spray header is open and that of other GTs are closed. 11. Run only water pump for 5 mins and, ensure that inlet pressure is 6 kg/cm2 at the machine (near spray header). 12. Run water and detergent pump for 5 mins and then stop both pumps.. 13. Stop the GT 14. Soak it for 25 mins. 15. Again bring machine to cranking. 16. Run water pump for 15 mins for rinsing and then stop. Keep the water only line valve full open while rinsing. 17. Check electrolytic conductivity for amount of impurities during rinsing. Conductivity should reduce and runoff water should contain less dissolved impurities. If required take one more cycle of rinsing. Quality of last sample should be Ph should be 6.5 to 7.0 TDS should be < than 50 Conductivity should be < than 50 18. Run machine for 20 mins to remove all water particles. 19. Stop the machine. 20. Restore all connections i.e. Drain of the inlet plenum is closed. Stop TK fans Remove blind of 5th stage Close water wash inlet valve Open APU inlet, CPD gauge and transmitter Open flame detector valve Open air supply to 20 CB ( supply to bleed valve ) 21. Start the machine within 24 hrs and run for 30 mins to ensure complete dryness.

Consumptions of materials.( in terms of cost ) 1) Detergent: =no. of ltr * rate/ltr 2) DM water: approx. = based on level from tank in ltrs. * cost of 1 ltr of DM water 3) Heater consumption := amp * time * Rs/kWh Payback period in terms of day when shutdown is taken exclusively for water wash : = Generation loss in MWH / gain in MWH/day eg. If loss is 1000 MWH and gain is 3 MWH then payback period is 1000/3*24 = 13.8 days. So effect of waterwash should minimum remain for 14 days, gain in MWH/day in excess of 14 days will be net gain. Hence review all these parameter after 1 month.
