Department of

Mechanical Engineering

Institute of Space Technology

Mission Statement
The mission of Mechanical Engineering program is to serve the engineering profession by providing high quality education and contribute to the development of innovative solutions through research in mechanical and allied disciplines.

Program Educational Objectives Introduction

The Department of Mechanical Engineering provides a firm foundation in basic sciences, mathematics and design methodology in the area of mechanical structures, fluids, manufacturing and thermal systems. Engines, ships, train, air & space vehicles, steam & gas turbine, machine tools, robots etc are a few systems and devices that need the knowledge of mechanical engineering. The structure and sequence of courses is designed to ensure that every graduate has the knowledge, ability and understanding required to meet the basic guidelines provided by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan and industries of repute. The curriculum includes the methodical tools, innovative thought, communication skills, management tools, and provide students the opportunities to work efficiently as individuals and in teams. In the senior year of the program students are required to apply the theoretical knowledge to real world and hands-on engineering experiences that require problem designing, team work, communication, time management and economic analysis. The department encourages the students to involve outside expertise in the relevant field, in these real world problems. The department also offers the opportunity for the students to participate in professional societies such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA) etc. The B.S program offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering is of 136 credit hours which cover many areas such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics & controls, structural mechanics, heat & mass transfer, IC Engines, machine design and manufacturing. This background is strengthened and integrated through application in engineering design and laboratory courses. Institute of Space Technology has developed and maintained a well-defined set of educational objectives and desired program outcomes. The educational objectives of the Mechanical Engineering program relate to all of our communities such as students, employers, alumni and faculty. The department tries to ensure that these objectives and desired outcomes are met which are generally observed through different assessment instruments. The educational objectives are listed below: Produce mechanical engineers with basic knowledge in mathematics, science and engineering, to develop problem solving skills necessary for the career advancement in mechanical & allied disciplines, and to implement these abilities into real practice. Produce engineers with a strong practical and theoretical exposure in the relevant disciplines, who are able to contribute to society through innovation, enterprise and leadership. Nurture engineer with a global outlook and to provide technological leadership through necessary technical tools. Produce engineers with teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills. Enable them to be productive members of interdisciplinary engineering teams and are further capable to adapt to changing environments of engineering, technology and society. Produce engineers with high morals and ethical values. Inculcate critical thinking among students and develop initiatives and innovative ideas.

An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability. An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams. An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility. An ability to communicate effectively. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning. A knowledge of contemporary issues. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Employment Prospects
Mechanical Engineering finds many applications in all fields of technology. Mechanical Engineers could work in government departments, private or public sector industries of various types. Strategic organizations could also hire Mechanical Engineers for their design and development projects in which candidates are trained according to their needs. Mechanical Engineers are required in oil exploration & refining, steel plants, electronics & robotics, space research organizations, technical wings of armed forces and many more. Aeronautical, agricultural, chemical, railways, bio-medical, textile, automobile and power plants require mechanical engineers to design and maintain their machinery. Mechanical Engineers play a significant role in agricultural sector such as maintenance of tractors, oil engines, pump sets, electric motors and other agricultural equipment. In addition, Mechanical Engineers have numerous job placements in marine engineering as cadets, marine engineers or navigating officers. Candidates with higher degree or an additional degree in management could find work in managerial & administration positions in public and private sector industries or government departments or could do research plus teaching in research and teaching organizations or could work as independent consultant.

Program Educational Outcomes

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has adopted ABET Criterion 3 educational outcomes that is supported by our defined educational objectives listed above. These educational outcomes relate to the aptitude, awareness and performance that students acquire as the program progress.
