Fiji Regime Leader Regrets Coup Delay

Fijis military ruler sat behind an imposing wooden desk, deep in thought. This was the most attention he had given to any of the questions posed to him in the interview thus far, and he seemed to be struggling to find an answer. Finally, after a lengthy pause, he said that he could think of only one mistake regarding his seizure of power more than six years ago. I wish I had done this in 2001, he said. Fiji, a former British colony made up of about 330 islands in the central Pacific Ocean, has been without an elected government since Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, also known as Frank Bainimarama, took power in a 2006 coup. It was the countrys fourth putsch since independence in 1970, and he insisted that military rule was the only way to ensure an end to the spasms of political and ethnic violence that have so often destabilized the country. Mr. Bainimarama, who now eschews uniforms for civilian dress, carries the title prime minister and describes his tenure as a cooling-off period before an eventual return to democracy. Mr. Bainimarama seemed to be keeping his word when, in January, he lifted the state of emergency that had been in place since he abrogated the Constitution in 2009. He then went further in March by announcing public consultations on the drafting of a new Constitution and a return to free elections by 2014, moves that were praised by Australia, the United States and other countries. But before the ink was dry on the order lifting emergency rule, Mr.

Bainimarama had issued sweeping new public order regulations, which many say contain provisions harsher than the laws they replaced. Censors Voreqe Bainimarama may no longer stalk newsrooms to vet stories before they are published, but editors still risk heavy fines and prison terms if what they publish is deemed objectionable. Political parties and labor unions can hold meetings, but they must first secure permission from the police. The effect has been chilling, as the cautious optimism surrounding the lifting of emergency law seems to have given way to plain old caution. Newspapers must print the names of their writers and photographers to reveal who is responsible for an article. If you miss a byline or a photo caption you can face a $100,000 fine

the equivalent of $55,000 or two years in jail. That should tell you all you need to know, said a local journalist, who requested anonymity for fear of retribution against his news organization. I think were in for a tough ride, he said. A tough ride is a good description of recent Fijian history. In 2000, during the countrys third coup, ethnic Fijian nationalists held the countrys first Indo-Fijian prime minister hostage in Parliament for 56 days. Mr. Bainimarama narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during that episode, which saw the eruption of ethnic riots in the heart of the capital, Suva. Continued on Page 3

Fiji Regime Leader Regrets Coup Delay

Continued from page 1 It was in an attempt to quell that unrest, in 2006 that the military stepped in and removed the government of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. Mr. Bainimarama accused him of corruption and inflaming the racial tensions between native Fijians and the descendents of Indians brought in by the British to serve as cheap labor in the sugarcane fields. Members of the current government, and in particular its powerful attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, seethe over what they consider a lack of international appreciation for their accomplishments, which they say include one of the longest periods of relative economic and political stability in the countrys post independence history. Instead, the British-led Commonwealth of Nations suspended Fijis membership in 2009, while New Zealand and Australia have each imposed travel, financial and other sanctions against those involved in the 2006 coup. Sitting in his spacious office in central Suva as the setting sun turned the bay outside his window from gold to deep red, Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum, who is IndoFijian, insisted that any criticism of the new regulations that took effect earlier this year is based on either a misunderstanding or the entrenched biases of neocolonialists. Eventually, he said, people will see that while the new regulations contain strong law and order provisions, the government has no intention of using them unless absolutely necessary. The proof is in the eating of the pudding, he said. Such reassurances, however, are cold comfort for critics of the government and those who claim to have suffered abuse at its hands. International rights monitors like Amnesty International have blasted Fiji for its human rights record, which allegedly includes the torture of prisoners and the arbitrary detention of activists and government opponents. Nowhere is the sense of fear this has engendered more evident than in the behavior of Fijis journalists. Not one would consent to be interviewed on the record, even though more than six months had passed since Fiji reinstated a free press. The only reporter who had agreed to speak for attribution sent an e-mail just days later asking that his name not be used out of fear of retribution. Although several Western diplomats said they were encouraged by the governments promises to hold elections and write a new Constitution, they nonetheless expressed serious concerns that the credibility of its pledges to return to democracy was being undermined by the public order regulations. Most of us dont like the POAD the Public Order (Amendment) Decree, said a Western diplomat based in Suva, speaking on the condition of anonymity in line with diplomatic protocol. It is certainly a vehicle they could use to silence dissent. Netani Rika is not used to keeping silent. He is the former editor in chief of The Fiji Times, the countrys oldest newspaper, which was owned by Rupert Murdochs company, News Corp., until it was forced by the Fijian government to sell to a local owner in 2009. Mr. Rika, who in the early days of martial law defied the censors by leaving whole columns of his newspaper blank instead of running censored copy, left the job in 2010 after soldiers threw gasoline bombs at his home. No one has been charged over the incident, which he said had followed a telephone call from Mr. Bainimarama asking him to back off his criticisms of the government. Im not optimistic, Mr. Rika said, sitting at the bar in the Defense Club, a colonial-era institution in Suva that serves as a gathering point for the capitals elite. A lot of what theyve done and will do leading up to the 2014 elections is going to be superficial. Unless some good people stand up, well be left with those army guys who will morph into politicians, he said. And then theyll be in power for 10 more years. The question of who will run in the elections is a critical one. Mr. Qarase, who was ousted as prime minister in 2006, faces charges of corruption and abuse of office that many say are politically motivated. Mahendra Chaudhry, the prime minister held hostage in 2000, also faces corruption charges stemming from his time in office. Both may be disqualified from running for office if convicted, which would eliminate the two most popular alternatives to Mr. Bainimarama, who in the interview on May 29 would neither rule out nor commit himself to a run for office. Even if the elections proceed smoothly, Mr. Chaudhry said in an interview in his hilltop offices overlooking Suva, there is no guarantee they will result in the end of Fijis so-called coup culture. There are always scores that need to be settled. Maybe this time what we need to take a look at, he said, is the role of the military.

CONVICTED triple murderer Max Sica should not be eligible for parole until December 15, 2053, the prosecution says.

Prosecution Wants Max Sica Behind Bars Till At Least 2053

VICTIM Neelma Singh, 24, and convicted triple murderer Max Sica. Sisters Neelma, Sidhi, 12, and brother Kunal, 18, were found dead in a spa bath on Apr 22 2003 in their Bridgeman Downs home. They are seeking a 45 year term for Sica- including 1299 days already served in custody - which would mean he would be 83 when eligible for parole. Massimo "Max" Sica, 42, was found guilty on Tuesday of killing his former girlfriend Neelma Singh, 24, and her siblings Kunal, 18, and Sidhi, 12, in April 2003. The trio was found dead in an overflowing hot spa at their parent's Bridgeman Downs home in Brisbane's northern suburbs. After a 77-day criminal trial - the longest in Queensland legal history - a Supreme Court jury deliberated almost four days before finding the Crown's strong circumstantial case was sufficient to find married father-of-two daughters had ended the three siblings' lives. Criminal lawyer Peter Saggers, shortly after the verdict, said his client, Sica, was "obviously disappointed" about the jury's decision and would most likely appeal the verdicts. "We've got a month (in which to lodge any) appeal," he said. Under a Queensland law, a person convicted of multiple murders receives a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment and must serve a minimum of 20-years before being eligible for parole. Sica went to the Singh family's home late on the night of April 20, 2003, to talk with Neelma and possibly have a prayer meeting about his tumor. No calls were made or answered from the Singh house - mobile or landline - after 11.10pm on April 20 and each of the trio were dressed for bed which indicated they were killed before getting dressed on the Monday morning. For some reason - perhaps out of jealously or rejection - in a rage Sica strangled Neelma, the Crown said. It is believed Sica - fearing Kunal and Sidhi could identify him as Neelma's killer - got a garden fork and attacked them. Sidhi was beaten to death probably in her bed. Kunal was knocked unconscious also probably in his bed. The dead bodies of Neelma and Sidhi were dumped into a running spa and Kunal was also placed in the spa where he drowned. Sica then used bleach and other materials to clean the murder scene and wash away DNA, but left his sock print in the freshly cleaned area. Sica lied about being home on the night of the murders and also lied about the time he arrived at the Singh home when he discovered the bodies. No one else was expected at the Singh house that night and items missing from Singh house were of sentimental value about Neelma including a pendant Sica had given her. When Sica had called police saying there were three bodies in the spa. First officers on the scene could see only two bodies. The parents of the Singh siblings, Vijay and Shirley, were present in court for the hearing, so too were Sica's mother and father, Anamaria and Carlo. The hearing before Justice John Byrne continues. After sentencing, Sica will be transferred to the Brisbane Correctional Centre for another mental health assessment, as per Queensland Corrective Services procedure. Previously he was on remand at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, but after sentencing, stricter conditions will apply such as fewer personal visits and phone calls.

Families To Relocate For Airport

RESIDENTS along Visama Feeder Road affected by the extension of Nausori Airport will need to move their houses by the end of this year. Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) said it would compensate anyone who needed to be moved. "The first phase of development works will cost about $F24 million and that includes compensation or allowances to be paid out," AFL chief executive Tony Gollins said. "The main focus of the first phase is safety because we have been blacklisted by the International Pilots Association and we are focusing on meeting their requirements." He said development works were expected to start by mid December. "We will be offering compensation to anyone who needs to be moved," he said. Vrija Nand Sharma, who has lived beside the airport for most of his life, said they deserved good compensation for their house and farm. "They (AFL) have not given us any written notice but some officers have informed us that we will need to move by November," Mr Sharma said. He said they needed something in writing because a lot of work was required to find another site for his family. Another resident, Phul Mati, said they were sad because their ancestors had lived there for the past 75 years. "Some officers came and told us that we will need to move before the first stage of development works at the airport," Ms Mati said. Sujend Prasad, who will also be affected, said officers from the iTaukei Lands Trust Board told them last month to move their houses by November. "The officers said they will give us money for our land and they will not compensate for the damage to the house. People whose leases have expired will be compensated for their houses and farms, but those with leases will be compensated for land only," Mr Prasad said. Alipate Qetaki general manager iTaukei Lands Trust Board said they did not inform anyone to move. "According to TLTB's regional manager central in charge of the area, TLTB was not involved at all in informing or giving notice to residents and tenants to move," Mr Qetaki said in an email. "TLTB is aware that officers from the Lands Department are conducting valuations in the areas you had mentioned (Veisama Feeder Road) and those officers may have been talking to residents and tenants." Residents said about 15 families were informed that they will need to vacate their houses. However, Permanent Secretary for Lands & Mineral Resources Tevita Boseiwaqa said total number of leased properties affected was four "meaning four families will need to move their houses". Mr Boseiwaqa confirmed that officers of the Department of Lands & Surveys have been visiting only those residents affected by the Nausori Airport Extension, to negotiate the acquisition of their land. "The affected residents will be compensated, through negotiation in one of two ways, either they accept the monetary compensation or elect to be re-located to land which is similar to the land acquired for the airport extension," Mr Boseiwaqa said. "The above 4 leases would need to vacate their houses by the end of this year, 2012 (and) the balance of the land required for Stage 1 is unleased itaukei land for which negotiations are still continuing," he said.

Minister Proud Of Female Police Officers

Minister for Women Dr Jiko Luveni applauded the growing number of women serving in the Fiji Police Forces. There used to be no women in the Fiji Police Force in the 60s and early 70s but today there are 740 female officers out of the 3875 police officers in the Fiji Police Force, Dr Luveni said. Fiji Police Academy Commandant Vilisi Misiamete told the minister that there are currently 28 women officers in the Inspector level, 35 in the Sergeants level, 65 in Corporals and 612 in the subordinates level. Because of the skills knowledge and abilities, 3 senior officers have also attended overseas trainings in Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, India, China, Misiamete said. The minister was also told that 69 female officers in the Force have also been posted on overseas peace keeping missions. Female officers serving in Liberia has been recently praised and recognized for their tireless work in the community there, she said. Dr Luveni also told female officers that 49 percent of Fijis population is female according to the 2007 census. We need to narrow the gap between man and women in development. Fiji today is in a much better position listed 87th in the human development index of developing countries in the world today before we used to be in the 90th position.

Fijis green products displayed at the Fiji Booth at the International Exposition Yeosu Korea 2012 in Yeosu City have attracted a lot of attention. This was confirmed at the Fiji Booth in Yeosu by Niqa Tuvuki. With the change of weather from the cold to humid temperatures and the daily media promotion, are two main factors of the enormous and massive visitors pouring into the Pacific pavilion, she said. Mrs Tuvuki added the Pacific Joint Pavilion had begun to witness the cumulative figure from June 3 to 9 with the total of 37,022 visitors, much higher figure, compared to the previous weeks . Both students and people from all works of life had begun to push their way into the Pacific Pavilion as summer vacation and holiday breaks for students begins, she said. We had also run out of all printed brochures for the entire Pacific Pavilion as these were used by visitors for stamps.

Fijian Products Attract Yeosu Expo

When the media visited the Fiji Booth on June 28, Mrs Tuvuki said the amount of visitors that had visited the Fijian Booth had increased and the Fiji green products had attracted a lot of attention. The Fiji booth she said had showcased the unique products from the different companies Pure Fiji, Makosoi, Naturally Fiji, Aqua Safe and Fijian Noni and diverse culture they represent at the World Trade Expo. Items displayed at the Fiji booth include a drua, fishing nets, crab net, Na i kali, eel net, small fish, crab, masi, tanoa, Printed Tapa, Baby Mat, War clubs among other Fijian products. Mrs Tuvuki said they had also used the expo to advertise Fiji as tourist haven. Many, she said, had mentioned their intention to visit Fiji. Fiji, she said with the theme for the Expo Promoting Creative and Sustainable Maritime activities through the Journey continues to attract visitors at the World Trade Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea.

Minister Gives 2 Weeks Notice For 549 Health Workers

A two-weeks notice has been given to the 549 Ministry of Health workers who have yet to submit their position description report. Minister for Health Dr Neil Sharma said all these workers have to submit their PDs or otherwise their pay will be deducted. "They will get a final warning and they have to give an explanation as to why they have not submitted their reports yet, he said. Dr Sharma said a position description report is a report that workers have to submit to their supervisors in order for their supervisors to know what their responsibilities are. Apart from submitting their PDs they also have to submit their confidentiality report which will enable the workers to get promoted, said Dr Sharma. We have been informing them for the past three years to submit their report but still they never submit it and as a result we do not know who is supposed to do what and this brings in inefficiency, he said. He said these workers are not confined to one group but includes doctors, nurses, lab technicians, cleaners and

Japan Provides $6.4M Equipments To Detect Early Disaster

The Government of Japan will be providing $6.4 million worth of equipments for improvement for disaster risk management in the country through the Fiji Meteorological Services. This was revealed at the official signing ceremony of agreement on minutes of discussion on the preparatory survey on the project for improvement of equipment for disaster risk management in Suva. The equipment will include tide gauge covering Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, VSAT communication infrastructure for remote areas and other related equipment which will contribute to disaster reduction. Ministry of Works, Transports and Public Utilities deputy secretary Malakai Tadulala said preparatory team of relevant experts in the field is undertaking a survey in order to ensure that project is implemented successfully to meet its core objective. Tadulala said when earthquake strikes, this instrument can send warning signals and also forecast the possibility of tsunami being generated from such earthquake. The minutes of discussion that was signed covers the relevant logistics that are needed in order for the mentioned equipments and instruments to be purchased from relevant suppliers in Japan. The instruments are five sea tide measuring equipments, two automatic weather stations, five satellite communication equipments and one wind profiler. On the whole, all these equipments and instruments when installed shall be linked through Japanese Meteorological satellite Himawor to various meteorological agencies around the world. Further, Tadulala said it was predicted these instruments shall be able to detect and provide early warning signal on tsunami some two hours lead time before it affects communities in Fiji. JICA chief representative Shumon Yoshiara said the equipment will enhance the capabilities of the weather office to provide accurate and effective weather forecast. Yoshiara said the Pacific Island countries are resilient to natural hazards and need to manage climate and disaster risk as part of the their economic and social development. JICA chief consultant Kiyofusa Tanaka said the equipment is due to arrive in 2014 where Japanese engineers will be installing it and also provide trainings to local engineers. Tanaka said they will be tabling the survey that was conducted to the Japanese government and the final component will be decided soon.

A new customs regional training centre is expected to open in Fiji in August this year. This was after the Secretary General of World Customs Organisation (WCO) Kunio Mikuriya and Fiji Ambassador to Belgium Peceli Vocea signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of the centre in Suva on the final day of the Customs Cooperation Council in Brussels in June. FRCA in a statement said the establishment of the centre is in line with FRCAs strategic vision to be the Premier Revenue Collection, Border Management and Trade Facilitation Agency in the Region and therefore leading other Pacific Islands towards international best practices in Customs.

New Customs Regional Training Centre In August

The centre will be located in Revenue and Services Complex in Nasese and will include classrooms furnished with the latest audio and video technologies, a computer laboratory, and a fullyfledged library. The centre will be used for regional training, technical assistance meetings and other Customs related events and will serve as a very useful means for capacity building and promotion of Customs effectiveness and efficiency in the Pacific. The signing of the MOU marks a significant step forward in the provision of training for the WCO in Oceania region, opening up new horizons for co-operation between Fiji Customs and the WCO.

Turtle Recovery Workshop To Address Turtle Migration

The Fiji Turtle Steering Committee chair Aisake Batibasaga said the 2 day workshop at the Tanoa Plaza in Suva is designed to bring relevant stakeholders together to convince them to put more effort in implementing Fijis sea turtle recovery plan. Mr Batibasaga said although they havent finalized the actual number of turtles nesting in Fiji, current evidence suggest that turtles are coming back but they still need to confirm that statistically. There is a ban on sea turtle harvest in Fiji until December 31, 2018. We found out that we and the stakeholders should do more to recover the sea turtle population in the country, Batibasaga said. The Fisheries Protection of Turtles Amendments 2010 says that no person shall in any way molest, take or kill turtles of any species, or sell , offer, or expose for sale of and export any turtle shell, flesh or derivatives thereof, or even digging up eggs and consuming them. Batibasaga said the maximum penalty is $400 fine which is not strong enough. He said they are now trying to rope in other stakeholders who have not been contributing in the past to strengthen the aim of implementing Fijis sea turtle recovery plan. I am grateful to most of our stakeholders who have been very active in taking our message down to villages and educating the people on the protection of sea turtles like the World Wild Life Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Fiji Locally Managed Marine Association and others. Global researches on sea turtle have shown that their population has been declining at alarming rates in recent decades. In some areas there is clear indication that they are under threat of extinction due to human activities. Threats currently facing sea turtles include destruction of reefs, loss of nesting beaches, pollution of oceans, over harvesting, poaching of turtle eggs, death in driftnets, gillnets, trawling nets, and mysterious fatal disease. The 2 day workshop is being organised by the Fisheries Department in partnership with World Wild Life Fund for Nature.

Election Office Launches New Website And Facebook Page

The Elections Office has launched a new website (http://www.electionsfiji. org/) and Facebook page (www. facebook.com/Fijielectionsoffice) to help spread information about the EVR process. As part of Governments effort to encourage all Fijians to register, in particular young and first-time voters, the Elections Office has launched an online campaign to engage with those Fijians who spend time on the internet and who regularly use social media, said the Attorney-General and Minister for Electoral reform, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The website will be updated daily with relevant information about the EVR process, including Voter Registration Center (VRC) locations and opening hours. From the website Fijians can also send questions directly to the Elections Office, can download a brochure to learn what to expect on the day of registration, and can read background information about the EVR and the Constitutional processes. The Elections office has also developed a Facebook page to establish a presence on social media. This page is updated daily and provides an interactive forum for discussion about the EVR process as well as up-todate information on EVR, stated the Attorney-General.

A man charged with assault has had his case adjourned by the High Court in Suva and released under strict conditions. Jai Prakash punched Muni Dewal Dass at a party at Jittu Estate in Suva on May 20. Magistrate Sufia Hamza said aggravating factors included the complainant suffering injuries. She considered Prakash's mitigating factors for an early guilty plea and an apology to the complainant which was accepted.

Prakash, 51, said he was a market vendor earning $60 a week and married with two children. In sentencing, Magistrate Hamza said he was to appear in court on notice and not commit any offence whatsoever during the adjournment period. She bound him over for $1000 for the next six months to maintain good behaviour. "If the court is satisfied that you have maintained good behaviour and peace for six months, you will be discharged," Magistrate Hamza said.

Government Media Officers Reminded Of Their Important Role

Pearl Shop Opens In West

A new specialized pearl jewellery retailer has opened for business in Nadi. The shop is the first of its kind to be opened in Nadi and in the Western Division "I knew that this was a market that wasn't yet looked into in Nadi so I decided to open a shop here in Nadi Town," said Blue Lagoon Pearls of Fiji Ltd operations director Raymond Krishna. Mr Krishna said the shop was his long time dream. "I've always wanted to set up a pearl shop that would cater for the local market and people. The jewellery we sell is cheap and sold at an affordable price. Our prices start from $250 which is a very cheap price when it comes to pearl jewellery. "But most importantly they're quality pearls," said Mr Krishna. He said the pearls were not sourced locally. "The pearls that we sell are not only from Fiji but they're from across the South Pacific. So we basically get the best quality pearls from all these places." Mr Krishna said the finishing touches to the pearl jewellery were done by professional staff members. "The finishing touches are always very important and this is done by our staff that is specifically trained for that." Mr Krishna said apart from catering for the local market, they also serviced tourists. "We have exclusive rights to sell our pearl jewellery to any visitor coming into the country for the purpose of coming for a vacation or to enjoy Fiji's renowned resorts and hotels," he said. The shop's wide range of jewellery includes pendants, necklaces, ear rings and rings.

Fiji's Ministry of Information permanent secretary Sharon SmithJohns reminded government media liaison officers (MLO) on the significance of their role as public relations officials for government. Thanking the MLOs for the work undertaken for the last 18-months, Ms Smith Johns said that the next few months will require a more coordinated commitment by them to maximize government publicity. "The last 18-months has seen a stronger collaborative approach in communication between Ministries, the Ministry of Information and most importantly, between government and the media," Ms Smith Johns said. "I would like to encourage you to keep it up as the next few months will be a challenge for all of us." Highlighting the role of MLOs in disseminating information for both the domestic and international public, Ms Smith Johns said that the work undertaken by government needs to be

constantly communicated to tax payers. "We must ensure that government's messages are consistent and accurate especially in cases where government is required to provide a response to critical and sensitive issues," she said. "Your role is to communicate what government is doing for the people and how best we can serve the taxpayers of Fiji." Every quarter all MLOs meet once for the MLO Network Forum. Today's forum highlighted the role of MLOs in using all available media platform to communicate government's message to the public. As well, an official from both the media sector and the Office of Elections briefed the MLOs on the challenges faced and proposed ways to address this. Each Ministry or government department agency is assigned an MLO to undertake media and public relations work. The MLO Network also includes public relations personnel from government statutory bodies.

Taiwanese In Court
A Taiwanese national appeared at the High Court in Suva charged with attempted murder. Bui Van Diep appeared before High Court Judge Justice Prabharan Kumararatnam. Diep was a crew on a fishing vessel that stopped over in Suva earlier this year. The offence was allegedly committed during this time. The case was called to check on whether a Taiwanese interpreter had been found to assist during the case. However, in the absence of a court interpreter, the case was adjourned to August. The facts of the case are yet to be read out in court.

New Zealand Mission Youths In Fiji

Eight volunteers from New Zealand who are also members of the International Youth with a Mission or YWAM have been in the country for the past four weeks as part of their regional interaction program. Led by Lydia Smith and Robert Jan Voogt, part of their work is to visit homes and communities, assist in various community activities and reach out to unemployed youths. Youth with a Mission has been established world-wide with members contributing voluntarily to its programs whose mission is To know God and make God known. The eight volunteers had initially spent the past three weeks in Suva attending to several community work and were at the Western Library Office helping clean the library compound and office. Librarian supervisor Varanisese Tusaqa in acknowledging the presence of the volunteers said that the involvement of youth organisations as YWAM and other similar working groups was essential in influencing Fijis own youth to carry out similar work. The group returns to New Zealand on July 9th.

Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sonal Chauhan Shoot With Venomous Snakes For 3G

Sedition accused Jagath Karunaratnes bail was varied, allowing him to travel to Sri Lanka for an annual prayer ceremony for his deceased parents. A notice of motion was filed by defence lawyer Rajendra Chaudhry on May 30, seeking permission for Karunaratne to leave Fiji to attend the ceremony. While in Sri Lanka, Karunaratne is also said to visit his brother who had undergone a surgery. Although the prosecution had objected to bail, Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili, while delivering the ruling on the bail variation, said the police officer, Corporal Kalusi Seru, had not taken steps to investigate the details

given by Karunaratne for his travel. With the application, Karunaratne had filed a letter from the priest who will be conducting the ceremony on July 14. Also made available was a list of contacts, the address and telephone numbers of the house Karunaratne will be staying at and the contact details of the closest police station in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Karunaratnes case relates to his alleged involvement in anti-government graffiti at various points along the Suva-Nausori corridor in October, 2011. He has been ordered to return to Fiji by July 20.

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh and his costar Sonal Chauhan, who are shooting in Fiji for their upcoming movie 3G, performed a daring stunt for an underwater sequence, in which they were surrounded by venomous snakes. 3G is a psychological thriller being directed by Sheershak Anand and Shantanu Ray Chibber. While shooting at the exotic location of Fiji, Neil and Sonal had a close encounter with snakes. In this particular underwater scene, Neil and Sonal were surrounded by sea snakes. However, little did they know that the snakes were extremely poisonous, as the crew-members had

wrongly informed them that they were harmless. "We were okay with the scene because we were told that the snakes weren't going to harm us. When we stepped into the ocean and went in slightly deep, there they were and coiled around the legs. We did not want to create a commotion there and stood quietly till they passed by. "Later, when we got out of the water we were told that they happen to be to most poisonous water snakes," Neil said in a statement here. The film will be shot in an almost two-month long schedule in Fiji and involves a few spine chilling sequences and stunts.

No More Loans For FEA

THE Fiji Electricity Authority will not take any more loans to finance the completion of the Nadarivatu Renewable Hydro Plant. The company has acquired the necessary funding to complete the project, FEA said in its 2012 annual report. FEA said all debt covenants imposed by lenders were satisfactorily met last year to ensure the government - being the sovereign guarantor of all FEA loans - was not exposed. FEA's total capital projects for last year cost $112 million. The company said it was the highest ever in the company's history, against $84 million in 2010. Borrowed funds and generating internal cash flows were used to fund the capital projects, the company said. The $112 million capital projects included: * Nadarivatu Hydro Project - $76 million, * rural and urban reticulation works $12 million, * replacement of motor vehicles - $2 million; and * the heavy fuel oil conversion project in Vuda - $6.4 million. FEA has a total debt portfolio of around $356 million which must be serviced or repaid over the next 15 years, the company said. This year, the company is expected to pay $37 million in debts and $35 million next year. And this is expected to be over and above the $60 million annual sum needed to fund capital expenditure plan. "It will have to keep aside cash surplus of at least $80 million a year and this means that FEA has to record good levels of profits to generate the necessary cash reserves required. "It is imperative that FEA adopt a business model that will achieve the desired profitability level to ensure that it remains financially sustainable," the company said.

Family Celebrates

India Donates To Flood Appeal

Fiji and India share special ties and it remains strong after the Indian Government Tuesday donated over FJD$360,425 for the Prime Ministers Flood Relief Fund. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama commended the Indian Government for the substantial donation, which he said the people of Fiji and especially those affected by the floods are grateful for. We are grateful for the considerable donation and it is very kind indeed for the Indian Government to assist those affected by the floods, the head of Government told the Indian High Commissioner, His Excellency Vinod Kumar. Mr Kumar informed the Prime Minister that the Indian Minister for External Affairs S.M. Krishna announced the donation in April. India and Fiji have close relations and this is a small token of support for the people devastated by the recent floods, His Excellency Kumar said. The Fiji Rugby Union also handed over the $15,000 donation that was collected as part of the charity auction held in Nadi recently. FRU chief executive officer Manasa Baravilala handed the cheque over to the Prime Minister, who thanked FRU for their efforts.

It was a joyous, splendid and sparkling night for a prominent local businessman having triple celebration with his family members and friends at the Grand Eastern Hotel in Labasa. Charan Jeath Singh celebrated his 50th birthday, 25th wedding anniversary and his twin daughters graduation on Sunday. Mandvi Nandita Singh and Namrata Charan Singh successfully completed Bachelor of Commerce and Law courses at the University of Auckland in New Zealand in May this year. Their mother Nandita Singh, a prominent Labasa medical practitioner, said this was one of her best family celebrations. More than 100 well wishers, prominent people from every part of Fiji, abroad and former members of parliament were part of this celebration. Ms Namrata Singh told the guests that her dads 50th birthday and her parents 25th anniversary was very special because it was a living proof of how deeply electrifying their love has been bonding their souls. Their love has been like silver, the element that has the highest electrical conductivity. It has been transferring their thoughts and feelings between the two of them and making them more glued each day, Ms Namrata said. About the twin sisters graduation Ms Mandvi Singh told the guests their graduation was a momentous event. We graduated with a feeling of deep satisfaction and it has marked the end of a whole era of our lives, she said. Education is the best gift any parent can give to their children and without which I would not have such features of character as determination, selfconfidence, purposefulness and commitment. Mr Singh on behalf of his family thanked everyone for taking out their valuable time to be part of their family celebration.

With technology and modern lifestyles reshaping the way we do business nowadays, it is important for our children to receive the best form of education available so that we can all progress further in helping to develop our Fiji. These were the words of Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama as he reminded the men and women of the RFMF of the need to encourage their children to attend holiday and weekend classes as a way of improving their own education. A recent survey by the RFMF indicated that children who had attended the extra day classes had recorded a successive pass rate of more than 58%.

PM Re-Emphasises The Need For Educating Childhren

Meanwhile Commodore Bainimarama also reminded the military personnel present at the Commanders Medal Parade that the Electronic Voter Registration process was an integral component of the Peoples Charter which the RFMF has been was very much part of since 2006. I am encouraging you all to register including your families and it is important for the RFMF to take the lead in ensuring that the EVR process is successful, Commander Bainimarama added. The RFMF will also be making submissions to the Constitution Consultation Commission.

Cabinet Approves Fiji Dairy Sale

Cabinet has approved the sale of Fiji Dairy to Southern Cross Foods Limited (SC Foods) for a basic sum of $10 million. This mean, Southern Cross Foods, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CJ Patel Group, will own 80 per cent of Fiji Dairy. The remaining 20 per cent will lie with the Fiji Dairy Cooperative Limited, run by the dairy farmers. The Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and Trade, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum, at a press conference said together with the sale price, SC Foods would take up the entire debt portfolio of Fiji Dairy Limited which is approximately $17m. The purchase price could fluctuate and could go up depending on the level of debt at the time of the actual sale being finalized, he said. He said the farmers would get to start off on a very clean slate. Agreement conditions Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the agreement for sale had a number of conditions which had been agreed to with the proposed purchased. These include setting up chilling plants in Ba and Lautoka within four months of the actual contract being executed, modernizing and upgrading the Fiji Dairy factory and starting up a dairy farm in Waidina. Setting up of chilling plants in Ba and Lautoka will give farmers in the Western Division the opportunity to supply the milk in the supply chain and encourage farmers to get into the dairy industry in Fiji, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. Governments focus will be primarily on assisting the farmers to increase yield. That is critical because we have a huge gap in supplying milk in Fiji. The Minister highlighted that SC Foods already had a 350-acre farm in Waidina which they intended to develop with 150 cows. That should be up and running within the next year or so, he said.

Diwesh Sharma

They have also undertaken to completely modernize and upgrade the factory within two to three years. So you will expect to see more Rewa brands coming out of the factory and this will provide lot more competition in the market and it will be good for consumers. Confidence in the industry Fiji Dairy executive chairman, Adrian Sofield, said he was very confident in the future of the industry that it had growth potential. The processing unit (Fiji Dairy), now in the private enterprise hands, will be operated on a commercial basis where accountability will be number one now, he said. I believe in the past that was not really been the case. But as we move forward, the private enterprise will certainly introduce new equipment, new ideas, new management techniques that will streamline the whole industry. The fact that our new owners will become farmers themselves, I think is a positive for the industry because they will understand and learn about the problems that are developing in the paddocks. They will understand and appreciate the problems and will be able to know how to tackle those problems. They will become a substantial farmer and within two years they will be expected to produce seven per cent of the total milk supply. They are looking to expand further where they could end up producing well over 10 per cent of the countrys milk supply. Mr Sofield said the farmers wished to increase their production from currently from just 10 million liters to 25 million liters. At present the factory is operating at only 60 per cent capacity with what is supplied to it, he said. With new equipment introduced in the factory, I have no doubt that 25 million liters would be processed locally.

Fiji Dairy Limited imports 80 per cent of its products, were a distributor but we want to become more of a manufacturer. Other interests Meanwhile, Mr Sofield revealed that 16 companies had responded to the expression of interest and this was brought down to two. We had Tappoos and SC Foods in the end but SC Foods won the race, he said. What they (SC Foods) offered to the industry, not so much in money terms but in value to the industry, we have taken that into consideration for the benefit of the industry. Mr Sofield said one of the positives here was that SC Foods is not connected with the dairy industry. We felt that that would take out any conflict of interest that may arise with offshore suppliers, whereas Tappoos for instance has connections with Fonterra; our biggest supplier. We felt it would be better to have an independent player rather than having someone who is connected with our principal supplier. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum stressed it was critical that whoever was given the final offer, had their focus on developing the local industry. And not partnering up with some foreign company because right now, in order to meet our milk supply demand, we have to import milk. SC Foods on that basis offers the best proposition in terms of developing the local industry and not simply relying on foreign partners to supplement the local supply chain, he said. Expertise Mr Sofield said the new owners would not only be investing in developing dairy farming and being hands-on farmers themselves. They already have experience in food processing and a good distribution network not only here in Fiji but in other Pacific Islands, he said.

Fiji Advances In USA Tuna Treaty

Significant advancements on Tuna Treaty negotiations between the United States and the Pacific Island Parties will see US$63 (FJ$113.4) million given to the Pacific Island Parties over the next 10 years. A spokesman from the Embassy of the United States of America said an agreement was reached between the two parties at the negotiations in Auckland, New Zealand on June 22. The central issue in the negotiations on the Tuna Treaty has been the level fishing opportunities afforded to the US purse-seine fleet in waters under the jurisdiction of the Pacific Island Parties and the overall financial package, he spokesman said. He said among the benefits to Fiji, is that it would have steady annual revenue from the Tuna Treaty that it could count on, even if not a single tuna was caught in Fijis EEZ. Further, this revenue will be coming from a treaty and partner (the US) that has been benefiting Fiji for 25 years, so it can have great confidence that these benefits will be there, and will continue, he said. He further said how the money was distributed was up to the Forum Fisheries Agency and the Pacific Island Parties. Also included in the agreement is: - Payment per vessel day that is more than 50 per cent higher than the $5000 per day regional benchmark price established by Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA); - 17 per cent return on the value of the fish caught by US vessels licensed under the Treaty under current conditions, which exceeds the 10 per cent average rate of return desired by Pacific Island Leaders; and, - Fair compensation for fishing opportunities in the waters under the jurisdiction of non-PNA States. The spokesman said this agreement on the overall financial package, was a significant advancement in the negotiations. It creates a strong foundation on which the United States and our Pacific Island partners can continue to build a prosperous and sustainable future for the peoples of the Pacific region, he said. The United States looks forward to working with the Pacific Island Parties to address remaining technical issues and to reaching an early agreement to extend the Treaty. Since 1988, the United States tuna purse-seine fleet has operated in the Western and Central Pacific under the terms of a Treaty with the 16 independent States of the Pacific Forum. This mutually beneficial Treaty arrangement has provided unique access to Pacific fisheries for the US tuna fleet and has served as a vehicle for the Pacific Island Parties to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues. The United States is working closely with the Pacific Island Parties to negotiate an extension of this important Treaty beyond the current period, ending in June 2013, the spokesman said.

The Ministry of Works, Transport and Public Utilities recently visited the Lau group to monitor the progress of government development projects taking place in the group. A team led by the Ministrys Deputy Secretary of Operations, Manasa Lesuma visited these maritime islands to check for the viability of setting up a Bio Fuel mill. The Department of Energy has

Setting Up Of Bio Fuel In The Maritime Regions

proposed to set up six bio fuel mills in 2012. This will be made possible through the Bio Fuel department Unit, which is responsible for the installation of bio fuel mills in Fijis rural and maritime areas. Viliame Rasoni of the Department of Energy says that the main objective of these mills is not only to reduce the consumption and the dependency of diesel fuel for people living in outer islands but also to provide easy and cheaper fuel for rural electrification. These mills primarily produce bio-fuel and copra meal with the core objective of assisting these communities overcome the hardship encountered with delivery and cost of diesel to the islands. The project ensures that copra farmers get a better return for their produce and at the same lowering fuel costs. Leasing of land for the purpose of

setting up a bio fuel project has been a major huddle in implementing these projects. Mataqali Matavuralevuicake of Boitaci Village in Vanuabalavu has agreed to have their land leased to set up a bio fuel mill. Out of the six sites, five have been confirmed while two needs to be surveyed. These bio fuel developments will not only benefit the government but also the people of the respective islands.

Tourism Fiji is in the process of reviewing social media partners in countries like Australia, New Zealand, North America and Greater China. These two new appointments will complement and strengthen Tourism Fijis existing international brandbuilding campaign, Mr Meade said. Verve Communications and Mango Communications will work closely with Colenso BBDO and Sparks Interactive to help develop and position Fijis new brand meaningfully and effectively. Verve Communications is co-owned by Prue MacSween and Louise Di Francesco. Ms MacSween commented: This is an exciting opportunity for us to join with the new creative team to showcase Fiji as a unique and very special destination. Mango Communications is a full service agency which specializes in public relations, experiential and events. Its clients include Specsavers, Qantas, Lion, Cadbury, McDonalds and Tourism Holdings Limited. Managing director of Mango New Zealand, Claudia Macdonald, said: We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Tourism Fiji and the new team. Both agencies will begin work this month. As the electronic voter registration (EVR) gets underway, the Permanent Secretary for Elections, Mere Vuniwaqa, has yet again stressed that indiscipline of any form by registration clerks will not be condoned. Ms Vuniwaqa reiterated the call by Attorney-General and Elections Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, to refrain from any form of discrimination. Over the past two weeks, the clerks were trained by officials from Canadian company, CODE Corporation. CODE Corporation has been responsible for bringing in state of the art EVR kits and officials have actively participated in training the clerks. Ms Vuniwaqa said the train-the-trainer sessions had been successful and those trainers had been conducting sessions for EVR clerks throughout the country, teaching them how to use the software

Two international firms have been selected as Tourism Fijis new public relation (PR) partners. Sydney-based Verve Communications and the Auckland-based Mango Communications will work within Fijis traditional short-haul markets of Australia and New Zealand, respectively. Tourism Fiji acting chief executive, Michael Meade said: These firms were selected based on highly competitive criteria following a global tender process that garnered more than 60 expressions of interest from across the world. The appointments follow extensive destination marketing audit completed in late 2011 that concluded there was a need for a globally standardized Fiji brand that could be adopted and implemented in local markets. Mr Meade said: Both companies demonstrated a true understanding of our core mission and we believe they will fit seamlessly with our new brand, website and social media platforms that are being launched later this year. Tourism Fiji has also appointed a new global advertising agency; Colenso BBDO, a New Zealand-based website designer, Sparks Interactive, and will soon announce the appointment of an internationally renowned American PR partner.

used in the process. She said the clerks were governed by very stringent contracts and any breach of the contract would have consequences. These clerks have been informed that during the registration process, they will come across people who are not familiar with computers and have also been informed of how to approach them. All major stakeholders would be interested in seeing how best these clerks perform from today onwards, Ms Vuniwaqa said. EVR clerks will be in six major today and people are urged to visit them to get their electronic voter registration identity cards. These cards will enable the holders to cast their vote in the 2014 general elections.

Social Welfare Cards Can Be Used As EVR Identification

In efforts to further facilitate Fijians in the EVR process, the Elections Office will now accept Social Welfare Cards as an acceptable form of identification for the registration process. As a reminder, only one form of identification (ID) is needed. Acceptable forms of ID include Social Welfare Card, birth certificate, driver's license, passport, FNPF card or employment card. Please note: An employment card is an acceptable form of ID only if it carries a photograph of the individual.

Soldier Killed
On Sunday July 1, 2012, the United Kingdoms Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced with deepest sadness, the death of three soldiers. According to the MoD, two soldiers serving with the First Battalion Welsh Guards and one serving with the Royal Corps of Signals were killed in an incident at Checkpoint Kamparack Pul in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Major Ian Lawrence, said: Their loss will be felt deeply across Task Force Helmand. However, this will be nothing compared to the grief experienced by the soldiers families. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this extremely difficult time. The British High Commission sadly confirms that one of the soldiers involved in the incident is a Fiji national. The soldiers families have been informed and have requested for a period of grace before further details are released. The families have also asked for their request to be respected.

AFL Pays Remuneration, Benefits Goundar To Buy New Ship From Canada
AIRPORTS Fiji Limited paid $70,540 as remuneration and benefits for its directors last year. According to the company's 2011 annual report, a total fee of $44,134 was paid to the company's four directors while $26,406 was paid for other expenses incurred during the course of their duties. This included travel and accommodation, the board said. The four non-executive directors were Chairman Adrian Sofield, Samuela Tamani, Faiz Khan and Greg Lawlor. Under the company's Articles of Association, the Minister for Public Enterprises retains the "ultimate authority" to determine the remuneration and benefits given to the directors of the company. Meanwhile, the report said international passenger movements increased to 19.4 per cent in 2011 because of aggressive international marketing campaign promoting Fiji as a tourist destination by tourism stakeholders. The domestic passenger movement declined by 6.3 per cent partly because of the reduction of domestic aircraft flights, the report said. The Maximum Certificated Take-Off Weight for aircraft was 910,993 tonnes, a decrease of 4.1 per cent compared to 2010, the report said. "The company's airfield income is determined by the MCTOW of aircraft landing and taking off at our airport. The international MCTOW decreased by 6 per cent in 2011," the report said. Domestic MCTOW on the other hand, increased by 2.3 per cent last year, the report said. Factors like fuel price increase, the world financial crisis and natural disasters and particularly those that directly affect Fiji's source markets; make it difficult to predict passenger volume for 2012, the report said. The Goundar Shipping Limited will buy another ship before the end of this year. This was confirmed by the companys managing director and owner, George Goundar. Ill soon be leaving for Canada to buy a new ship for the company and it should be in service before the end of the year, Mr Goundar said. When asked about the name he said, In the meantime, the name will be a secret, but I can tell you that its being named after an island in the Lomaiviti Group. The new ship, he said, would be much bigger than the MV Lomaiviti Princess. The companys ship, the MV Lomaiviti Princess, is servicing the Koro, Savusavu and Taveuni route and Kadavu. Currently, the MV Lomaiviti Princess makes two trips from Suva to Taveuni every week where and she stops over in Koro and Savusavu on the way. Mr Goundar said the reason for bringing in another new ship was to improve their service to the people of Fiji. With the arrival of the new ship, we will be doing a daily service to Taveuni. He said the company was aware of the tough competition in the shipping industry, especially where there are a good number of ships providing services. Mr Goundar said they were competing with Consort Shipping Line Ltd in the Koro, Savusavu and Taveuni and also with the Bligh Water Shipping Limited in the Savusavu route. He said his company only wanted a fair competition by all shipping companies. Meanwhile, as part of its concern for the safety of its passengers, the company has started onboard water safety awareness briefings. In this awareness programmes, he said the crew provided safety briefings to all passengers about safety equipment and emergency procedures. Mr Goundar said it was their duty to educate passengers on what to do when accidents happen. They (passengers) are to be prepared. The crew, he said, carried out demonstrations of how to put on a life jacket and where to find them. We found out during the awareness programme that about 90 per cent of our passengers did not know how to put on a life jacket. The passengers are also taught how to use fire extinguishers, he said. Mr Goundar said this awareness programme was very effective and the passengers supported it. He said the companys priority was the safety of the passengers while travelling on their ship.

FEA Makes $51.9M Profit

FIJI Electricity Authority made a profit of $51.9 million last year, more than six times its revenue in 2010. The authority credited the large profit sum to the Monasavu hydro scheme as well as stringent measures to control operational expenditures. "This equates to a return of shareholder funds of positive 11 per cent," the company said in its 2011 annual report. And in his chairman's report Nizamud-Dean said FEA recorded an all-time high fuel cost at $137.8 million last year compared to $126.8 million in 2010. "This is equivalent to 77 per cent of the total revenue for 2009. Had the tariff increases in 2010 and 2011 not implemented, then substantial losses could have resulted in 2011," he said. FEA implemented the final phase of the tariff increase to achieve an average 39.4 cents per unit from April 1, 2011, the report said. "This tariff is expected to assist (sic) implement FEA's 10 year Power Development Plan which requires a total investment in the energy sector in excess of $1.5 billion," Mr Dean said. He said the government did not refund the non-commercial obligation costs which FEA incurred while supplying subsidised electricity to rural Viti Levu, Ovalau and the entire Vanua Levu. "It is estimated that FEA incurred about $20 million of NCO costs when fulfilling its social obligations in 2011," Mr Dean said. He said government accepted FEA's non-commercial contribution to social and community services through its electricity subsidies as its annual dividend to the government.

A former Fiji resident who donated to the Prime Ministers Flood Relief Fund has commended Governments efforts in the aftermath of the two disasters. Doctor Dhyan Lal, who migrated to the United States in 1962 but says Fiji still remains close to his heart, gave a donation of $7000 to Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama for the fund. He told the Prime Minister that he had visited many areas in Nadi such as the back road and other places affected by the floods where he heard people commending the Government for all the work they have done. We were told that right after the floods, Government moved in and cleaned all the areas and mobilised assistance to them, Dr Lal told the head of Government. I am making this contribution to the

relief fund because of all the work that I have seen your Government undertaking and I felt that its worthwhile, he said. Prime Minister Bainimarama was equally impressed by the work done by individuals like Dr Lal who has assisted students in the Western Division who were unable to pay their school fees. Dr Lal, who has been in Fiji for the last month, said he and his wife, Dr Shirley Lal, have been sending money through the International Red Cross whenever there were disasters in Fiji. He also gave $3000 to Red Cross in Nadi and has assisted a village in Bua, Vanua Levu. Dr Lal said the Government had done a wonderful job after the floods although more work was required to boost the infrastructure.

Ambassador Cavuilati Presents Credentials To Asean Secretary General

Fijis Ambassador to Indonesia Ratu Seremaia Tui Cavuilati presented his credentials to the Secretary General of the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat, Dr Surin Pitsuwan. The ceremony marks another milestone in the Fiji Governments Look North Policy taking Fiji closer into the axis of the 10-member Grouping of vibrant democracies and economies. The establishment of the Fiji Mission in Jakarta in April 2011 is pursuant to Governments overall desire to engage with like-minded friends in the broader international community. By virtue of such investment into the heart of ASEAN, probably the most successful inter-governmental organization in the developing world today, Fiji has secured for herself opportunities for further cooperation in the economic, social, cultural, technical, educational and other fields with the 10 members of the Group, each with her own unique strengths and characteristics. The formalisation of such a relationship with the ASEAN Secretariat is a step in the right direction in keeping with Governments commitment to engage and be participatory in regional as well as multilateral institutions in the spirit of the UN Charter to which Fiji is a party. The opportunity with the Secretary General afforded Ambassador Cavuilati time to brief on Fijis political developments in particular the roadmap to the formulation of a new Constitution by early 2013 and the general elections by September 2014. A brief on Fijis economy was also provided as part of Governments broader Roadmap. Further, at the UN level and in the spirit of Fijis Look North Policy, as an active member of the Pacific Small Islands Developing States (PSIDS), Fiji has been instrumental in aligning PSIDS to where it matters most for them given their smallness, the Asian Grouping. The Secretary General in his response welcomed the significant developments so far made in Fiji towards parliamentary democracy in 2014, and was also encouraged by the gradual strengthening of the Fijian economy having noted from a previous visit Fijis unique position as a leader in the region. He expressed the hope that ASEANs development and dynamism as a region as well as its significant contribution to the global economy will have its positive spin-offs to the regions Pacific neighbors including Fiji. He encouraged the Ambassador to engage and to use the Secretariats services and associations to forge closer ties with ASEANs membership and project Fijis aspirations. Fiji now becomes the 64th accredited member and will have her flag hoisted at the Secretariat Headquarters. Ambassador Cavuilati was accompanied by Second Secretary Pauliasi Tokasaya for the Presentation.

Good Start For Fiji's Delegation To The 11Th Pacific Festival Of Arts
Its a good start! That was the comment from the Minister of Education Mr. Filipe Bole after the Fijian delegation to the 11th Pacific Festival of the Arts was accorded a traditional welcome by the Fiji community in Honiara. For us, you know it was just like coming home. They have prepared the reception very well. They made the arrival here more like a home arrival, Minister Bole said. The 120 plus delegation from Fiji was treated to a reception by local Fijians who are a mix of families that have been in the Solomon Islands for many years, and those who have come over more recently from Fiji pursuing employment opportunities with the Solomon Island government and regional organisations. Mr Bole said the traditional reception was just what was needed, and to put the Fiji delegation in the right frame of mind before the official launch Tuesday. Its a very good start that we have been normalized into the situation so that when it (official opening) comes we will feel comfortable and are ready to commence in a proper fashion. Speaking to the local Fijians, Minister Bole said that his approach to this years festival was to focus on Fijis youth, ensuring that young people are playing an active role in the preservation and sharing of their culture. The need for this approach was demonstrated to Mr Bole on a recent tour of the northern division where a performance by Rabi High School really impressed the Minister. This has also been reflected in performances by the National Youth Band which has been promoting Fiji at various cultural and tourism exchanges around the globe. The Fiji contingent headed by the Honorable Minister comprise 15 students from Rabi High School, the Itumua dance group of Rotuma, the Vou contemporary dance group, practitioners of various traditional craft, and a team of officials who will support Mr. Bole at the meeting of Ministers of Culture which will be held during the next two weeks.

National Archives To Showcase Memory Of The World Initiative

The National Archives of Fiji will be making presentations at the Pacific Festival of Arts in the Solomon to increase awareness of the Memory of the World programme and try to get other Pacific nations to establish their own programmes and make their own submissions. The National Archives of Fiji is represented at the Pacific Festival of Arts in the Solomon Islands by its Director Mr Opeta Alefaio. He said that since Fiji is one step ahead of other Pacific Islands with the setting up of the UNESCO Memory of the World programme, the Pacific Festival of Arts is an opportunity to advocate such initiatives to our Pacific friends. In the context of culture they (Archives) can also be a source of information for the revitalization of customary practices. For example, a Fijian village had forgotten how to perform its signature meke' but an old recording of the song for the 'meke' was found in the archives of FBC and the villagers were able to reconstruct the 'meke' from that, Mr Alefaio said. In another example, the practice of terraced Dalo farming had become dormant in New Caledonia; however, through interviews of elders and studying archival sources, this practice has been revitalized, so that this piece of culture was not lost for all time. All our records are Pacific related. In terms of other communities in Fiji, we have records pertaining to the Solomon and Vanuatu labourers, we also have records about Kioa, and Rabi. He said the National Archives of Fiji is a partner in the cultural sector and works very closely with the Department of Culture to support the Ministers delegation to the Pacific Festival of Arts in the Solomon.

List Profitable Companies On Exchange

The government should list its profitable companies on the stock market, says a Reserve Bank of Fiji official. Chief Manager financial institutions Esala Masitabua said the idea of the public enterprises to float on the stock exchange was a suggestion for government to consider. Mr Masitabua said the idea was to have the profitable state owned enterprises or "winners" listed on the stock exchange by stimulating interest as a viable alternative for investment compared to banks. He said the central bank was also working on a law that would govern credit limitations in the country. He said there was also consideration for the establishment of a microfinance bank. Speaking at a symposium that addressed banking and finance in Fiji, Mr Masitabua said there was a small space just below the financing requirements that were offered by major banks like Westpac and ANZ that a microfinance bank could meet. He said RBF encouraged banks to lend in direct areas. "We don't intend to be stuck at 2 per cent growth," he said. Mr Masitabua said the bank supported the South Pacific Stock Exchange. Although SPSE - with 17 listed companies, 20,000 individual shareholders and $1.2 billion as capitalization - was still in embryonic stage, it was difficult to imagine who would fill the gap that SPSE had filled, he said. He said liquidity had cultural issues where some investors did not invest offshore. In another development, a university lecturer said Fiji needed strong financial banks and a strong financial sector. Neelesh Gounder, of Griffith University in Australia called for competition and efficiency among the retail banks as it would enable cheaper loan to consumers. Mr Gounder said there was more to banking than interest rates. The symposium, organised by the University of the South Pacific and Griffith University, was told the banking sector had experienced a trend of growing profitability. Mr Gounder recommended the introduction of measures that could increase competition as he called for efficiency in the banking system. He said regulatory requirements such as minimum capital had little impact on margin settings.

"Economic Growth Promising" Prime Minister

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says that the current GDP rating of 2.7% and the positive economic outlook is a clear indication of the commitment and passion of all sectors of the community in contributing towards Fijis progress. Despite the financial constraints endured as a result of the floods earlier this year, other key sectors such as Fisheries, Forestry, the Mining industry and Tourism continue to deliver promising benchmarks that has seen the recent improvements in our national financial status. The opening soon of Fiji Missions in Korea and Abu Dhabi will further generate opportunities for economical growth with other Non-Aligned Nations as part of our Look North Policy.

Judge Rules Unruly Jetblue Pilot Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity

Clayton Frederick Osbon, right, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. A US pilot who left the cockpit during a flight and screamed about religion and terrorists is not guilty by reason of insanity, a federal judge in Texas has ruled. US District Judge Mary Lou Robinson noted that JetBlue Airways pilot Clayton F Osbon suffered from a "severe mental disease or defect". Osbon's lawyer, Dean Roper, declined to comment. Osbon will be sent to a federal mental health facility for further examination until another hearing on or before August 6. The judge will decide whether he can be released or should be committed to a mental facility. Osbon was indicted on one charge of interfering with a flight crew after the March 27 incident on flight from Las Vegas to New York. Passengers said they wrestled him to the floor after he ran through the plane's cabin yelling about Jesus and al-Qaeda. The plane made an emergency landing in Texas. Next month's hearing puts the burden on Osbon to show "by clear and convincing evidence" that his release would not pose future danger, according to court records. JetBlue spokeswoman Alison Croyle said the airline "continues to support the Osbon family; we don't have further comment as we let the judicial process play out". "We can confirm he is still employed, on inactive status, with JetBlue," Croyle said.

TWO men who allegedly tried to hijack a plane in China were beaten to death by passengers and crew. The Global Times newspaper reported that two of the suspects died in hospital from injuries they suffered during the ensuing fight with passengers and crew on board. The men were part of a six-strong gang involved in the foiled hijack of a Tianjin Airlines flight bound for the regional capital of Urumqi. Just minutes after the flight took off from Hetian, southwest Xinjiang, the men, all aged between 20 and 36, stood up and announced their plans to terrified passengers. The gang reportedly broke a pair of aluminum crutches and used them to attack passengers while attempting to break into the cockpit, Hou Hanmin, a regional government spokeswoman said. They were tackled by police and

passengers who tied them up with belts before the plane, carrying 101 people, returned to the airport safely just 22 minutes later. Hanmin added that police were still testing materials they had been carrying, thought to be explosives. The men were reported to be Uighurs, the local Muslim ethnic minority. There have been clashes between authorities and Uighurs resentful of government controls over their religion and culture. Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the German-based World Uyghur Congress which campaigns for Uighurs rights, said that it wasnt a hijacking attempt, rather an in-flight brawl over a seat dispute. We warn China not to use this incident as another excuse for crackdown, he said in an emailed statement. Two more suspects are reportedly being treated in hospital after mutilating themselves.

Mammoth Lakes Becomes Second Bankrupt Californian Town

Councilmembers in a small ski town high in California's Sierra Nevada voted unanimously Monday to file for bankruptcy, the second local government in the state to recently make that decision. Mammoth Lakes is facing a $43 million judgment that's more than twice the town's budget. Papers seeking Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection could be filed in court as soon as Tuesday, according to Marianna Marysheva-Martinez, the assistant town manager. The city of more than 8,000 people about 300 miles north of Los Angeles has lacked sufficient revenue to pay $2.7 million in obligations, and a state court has ordered it to repay its largest creditor, Mammoth Lakes Land Acquisition. The filing will make Mammoth Lakes the second local government after Stockton to use a new state mediation process before filing for bankruptcy.

Devastating India Floods Leave 95 Dead, Millions Homeless

state has seen since 2004. Assam's river island of Majuli experienced its worst flooding since 1950. Prime Minister Singh and Sonia Gandhi of India's ruling Congress party flew over the flooded areas to survey the damage. Singh announced that an initial 5 billion rupees (US$90 million) would be given in emergency funds to help with recovery efforts. "I have witnessed the extensive damage that the floods have caused. The people of Assam are facing one of the worst floods in recent times," Singh said in a prepared statement. After his tour of the affected districts, Singh said military helicopters were dropping food packets and drinking water to marooned people, and soldiers were using speedboats to rescue villages from rooftops. "Once we have completed rescue and relief operation, our focus will shift to restoration of the damaged infrastructure," Singh said. Large swaths of cropland have been affected by the flooding, and a railway line has been severely damaged by landslides. Every year the monsoon dumps heavy rains across India, and every year it claims lives. The total number of deaths throughout India attributed to monsoon season this year has reached 236.

Flooding described by India's prime minister as the worst in recent times, has left at least 95 people dead and almost 2 million others homeless in the country's remote Assam state. The Brahmaputra River overflowed during monsoon rains over the past week, flooding more than 2,000 villages and destroying homes in the northeast of the country, officials said. Most of the dead were swept away by the fast-flowing water, while 16 were reported to have been buried by landslides caused by the heavy rains. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told journalists Monday that almost half a million people were living in relief camps, and the remaining of the displaced were staying with relatives or living in the open, using tarpaulin

sheets for shelter. Sabir Ali, who lives in one of the affected villages, had to move his family to higher ground with only what they could carry. "I am stuck. How will I survive? I've been forced to move to railways tracks with my children," he told the reporter. But water levels have begun to recede, and thousands have returned to damaged homes. A report issued on Tuesday lowered the number of evacuees to 370,000. Assam's State Disaster Management Authority reported that at least 14 people are missing. The agency reported that flooding had begun as early as June 24 in some areas and affected all of Assam's 27 districts. It is considered the worst flooding the

on the The Andy Griffith Show in the 1960s that gave him a place in television history. The show depicted life in the friendly, slow-moving fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was widely believed to have been based on Griffith's own hometown, Mount Airy, in that state. "North Carolina has lost its favourite son," governor Beverly Perdue said. "Andy Griffith graciously stepped into the living rooms of generations of Americans, always with the playful charm that made him the standard by which entertainers would be measured for decades ... In an increasingly complicated world; we all yearn for the days of Mayberry." President Barack Obama said he was saddened to hear of Griffith's death. "A performer of extraordinary talent, Andy was beloved by generations of fans and revered by entertainers who followed in his footsteps," he said in a statement. There was little crime to fight in Mayberry so the stories centered on the sheriff and his interactions with the quirky townspeople. "The basic theme of our show was love," Griffith said in a 2003 interview with CNN. "All the characters loved each other. And all the actors loved each other, too."

A waitress at a coffee shop in Britain failed to recognise Prime Minister David Cameron and told him she was busy serving other customers, and asked him to stand in a queue for 10 minutes. Cameron was on his way to the Armed Forces Day celebrations in Plymouth when he decided to stop for coffee, the Daily Mail reported. He went into the Sandwich Box Plus cafe, but waitress Sheila Thomas failed to recognise him and told him to wait. Cameron's aides went inside another bakery next door, and picked up for Cameron a jam doughnut and a cup of tea. When the prime minister began to enjoy his treat outside the shop, passersby recognised him and he again went inside the first cafe. However, Thomas was upset to see Cameron had picked up his food elsewhere and gave him another scolding. "I didn't realise it was him (Cameron) at first. I was in the middle of serving a customer, so I was running around trying to do something and didn't take too much notice, to be honest," Thomas said. "He asked if we served take-away coffee and I said, 'Yes but I'm in the middle of serving somebody', and he said, 'I'm so sorry'. It was only afterwards somebody told me it was the prime minister." "He came back in afterwards and I told him off for not getting a coffee here. He shook hands and was very pleasant," Thomas said. This was not the first time the prime minister has been made to wait for a drink by a busy waitress, the daily said. Last year, while on holiday with his family in Tuscany, Cameron was forced to carry a tray of drinks to his table when 27-year-old waitress, Francesca Ariani, told him she did not have the time.

American television star Andy Griffith has died in North Carolina at the age of 86. Griffith was the star of the 1960s program The Andy Griffith Show, as well as the 1980s legal drama Matlock. He died at his home on Roanoke Island on Tuesday morning, according to Dare County Sheriff JD Doughtie. His wife of three decades, Cindi Griffith, was at his bedside and issued a statement saying: "I cannot imagine life without Andy, but I take comfort and strength in God's Grace and in the knowledge that Andy is at peace and with God." The family said Griffith "has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island," but did not elaborate. Despite his later success with Matlock, it was the role of Sheriff Andy Taylor

78 Indian Workers Left High And Dry In Saudi Arabia

Seventy-eight Indians, working for a private firm in Saudi Arabia, have been left stranded without food and water after their employer reneged on paying their salaries for about six months, apart from failing to issue them identity and medical aid cards. The Indians -- mostly from the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar -- have been left without food and water at their shelter in Tabuk, a town about 1,000km from Jeddah and located close to the Jordan border, according to one of the victims. The workers had been hired about two years ago by the Tabuk-based Mutafail Maintenance and Trading Company through an Indian recruiter and had gone to work at the facilities of the Saudi firm in 2010. "However, sometime in the beginning of 2012, the firm stopped paying our salaries and for the last six months we have been without food and water. The shelter we stay in also does not have enough facilities for a decent living," Pankaj Mishra, one of the 78 Indian workers, told the reporter from Tabuk over phone. "We have not been issued the mandatory medical card and the Akana (identity) card, which allows us free movement around the town and the country. Soon after we arrived, our passports were taken away from us and is now in the custody of our employer, which is the norm for any overseas employee," Mishra said. He also lamented that they wanted to return home, but were unable to do so without their passports. The workers had got in touch with the Indian consulate in Jeddah regarding their problems six months ago. The Indian consulate in Jeddah said it was seized of the matter relating to the Indian workers in Tabuk and had taken up the problems of these expatriates immediately after being informed of their plight. An official, who did not wish to be named, noted that the consulate was in touch with the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs in New Delhi over the 78 Indian workers' problems and was informing the ministry back here on a regular basis. "At the moment, we have a senior official from the Jeddah consulate present in Tabuk talking to the local labour authorities and the employer to settle the issues," the official told the reporter over phone from Jeddah. "Due to our negotiations, we have been able to convince the Saudi firm to pay up salaries of four months to all the Indian workers," he said. Noting that the plight of the 78 Indian workers is not "an isolated case", the official said that it was the sort of issue that all expatriates, be it from Pakistan, Bangladesh, or any other country, faced in Saudi Arabia, all due to the labour laws and rules, which were quite stringent. The issue of the 78 Indian workers is now being heard in a labour court in Tabuk and the Indian consulate from Jeddah is providing them legal assistance.

Florida 'First Time Offender' Gets 161 Years In Prison

argue that Daviss sentence to die in prison also constitutes cruel and unusual punishment on the grounds that Davis is a first offender, having never before been charged with a crime. Just as the Supreme Court recently held that the Constitution bars taking away all discretion from judges in sentencing juveniles to life imprisonment for committing murder, said the attorney, Jacqueline Shapiro, so also is it cruel and extreme to allow unfettered prosecutorial discretion to force a sentencing judge to impose a life sentence on a teenage first offender convicted of lesser charges. Daviss unusually long sentence results from a controversial practice known as stacking, in which each count of an indictment is counted as a separate crime, thus transforming a first-time defendant into a habitual criminal subject to multiple sentences and mandatory sentencing guidelines. Any law that provides for a mandatory term of imprisonment for a 19-year-old first offender that exceeds a century has got to be unconstitutional, said Michael Zelman, the court-appointed attorney who represented Davis at his trial. Zelman resigned from Daviss case after filing a notice of appeal. If Daviss new lawyer, Shapiro, has her way, the Supreme Court may ultimately decide the issue. The case will be appealed first to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta. Until then, Daviss story will be a prominent case in point for both sides in an increasingly heated debate, pitting those who would protect society from the prospective dangers posed by serial criminals against those who see the United States - whose overcrowded prisons house fully one-quarter of all the prisoners in the world, most of them black or Hispanic - as a bastion of injustice.

19 Kids Left With No Food For A Week: Cops

Cops in Kentucky say 19 children, as young as eight months old, were left alone in a filthy home in Bowling Green for a week with no food. Kentucky's deputies found the kids Monday night following a complaint from a neighbour and took the children to hospital. The children, aged eight months to 14 years old and believed to be from a blended family, have been placed into foster care. The parents claim they had to leave the state because of a family emergency and had car trouble, police told the broadcaster. Nine dogs and a cat were also found at the residence. Police say they arrested the mother, believed to be the biological mother of some of the children, Tuesday afternoon and are still searching for the father. Jackie Farrah has been charged with 14 counts of criminal abuse and five counts of wanton endangerment.

Quartavious Davis is still shocked by what happened to him in federal court two months ago. My first offense, and they gave me all this time, said Davis, a pudgy African American with dreadlocks who spoke with Reuters at the Federal Detention Center in Miami. Might just as well say Im dead. Davis was convicted of participating in a string of armed robberies in the Miami area in 2010. His accomplices testified against him, saying he carried a gun during their crimes and discharged it at a dog that chased them after one of their burglaries. But Davis was not convicted of hurting anyone physically, including the dog. Davis would occupy no place at all in the annals of crime if not for his sentence. Now 20 years old, he was sentenced to 1,941 months - almost 162 years - in prison without the possibility of parole. On the day of Daviss interview with Reuters, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that life sentences without parole for defendants under the age of 18 constituted cruel and unusual punishment even in cases of murder. Unfortunately for Davis, he was 18 at the time of his crimes. Nonetheless, Daviss attorney will

No, you're not so blotto that you're hearing voices. The toilet in a Michigan bar really is talking to you. State police figured they'd hit guys right between the eyes with the message not to drink and drive on the Fourth of July holiday. This week, they unveiled talking urinal cakes that remind customers to call a cab or a friend and get home safely. The cakes are printed with the words

Talking Urinal Cakes Urge Customers Not To Drink And Drive

"Call a ride. Get home safe." But for those who may be seeing double, the cakes also speak. When a stream strikes the cake, a female voice says, "Listen up. That's right, I'm talking to you. Had a few drinks? Maybe a few too many? Then do yourself and everyone else a favour: Call a sober friend or a cab. Oh, and don't forget, wash your hands." Federal funding paid for the urinal cakes to be distributed to around 200 bars in four Michigan counties. "While this message isn't new, the method of delivery certainly is," said Michigan State Police spokesman Michael L. Prince in a statement. "Not only do we want to turn some heads and get people talking, we hope everyone takes the message to heart."

Manitoba Company Fined $12,000 In Illegal Worker Bust

Ottawa Closes Door On Hiring Foreign Workers For Sex Trade

The head of the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada says he is considering challenging a new ban that stops strip clubs, massage parlours and escort services from bringing foreign temporary workers into the country. What the government is doing is destroying an industry, creating a labour shortage and driving those women into more precarious situations, executive director Tim Lambrinos said Wednesday. The government needs to provide evidence that strip-club owners are exploiting anyone, he added. Strip clubs are a very safe environment. Human Resources Minister Diane Finley and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney announced earlier Wednesday that strip clubs, escort services and massage parlours will no longer have access to temporary foreign workers under new immigration changes. Foreign nationals brought in to work in sex trade-related businesses are particularly at risk of being exploited and abused. Denying these businesses access to temporary foreign workers will help protect vulnerable individuals by keeping them out of these situations, Finley said in Toronto. She said there was good reason to believe these workers are at risk. Finley pointed out that an RCMP report in 2010 called Human Trafficking in Canada shed light on a flourishing trade in sexual services, many of them operating out of Eastern European escort agencies based in Toronto and Montreal. Women are shipped in and out of Canada by transnational prostitution rings, stated the report. Foreign workers are lured to Canada with the promise of legitimate jobs but the women are then forced to work in brothels. Finley said organized crime networks have been facilitating the entry of women from former Soviet states into strip clubs and escort services in both the Toronto and Montreal area. The new measures from the government are to combat this human trafficking in Canada, she added. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada will no longer provide any positive Labour Market Opinions (LMO) to these businesses and, hence, they will now not be able to apply for work permits, which are issued by Citizenship and Immigration. (Temporary foreign workers need a positive LMO to be eligible for work permits.) Also, strippers currently working in Canada will be allowed to continue to work, but their work permits will not be renewed. An Immigration Canada spokesperson said 496 visas were issued to exotic dancers between 2006 and 2011. The majority of permits issued over the past

A Manitoba company at the heart of a high-profile immigration debacle that led to the deportation of three hardworking Filipino men affectionately dubbed the "Three Amigos" pleaded guilty and fined $12,000 for breaking Canadian immigration-protection laws. 5896941 Manitoba Limited - operating as a Shell gas station in Thompson, Man. pleaded guilty last week before provincial court Judge Tim Preston to counts of misrepresentation and employing illegal foreign workers under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Preston fined the company $12,000. "The potential for abuse is so huge, I think a message has to be sent," Preston said in passing sentence. The station's owner, Adnan Chaudhary, was in court for the hearing. Preston was given what was described as a "voluminous" statement of facts regarding the Canada Border Services Agency's investigation in the case, but none were read into the court record. Migrant workers Antonio Laroya, Arnisito Gaviola and Ermie Zotomayor were deported in May 2011 to their native Philippines and ordered excluded from returning to Canada for at least a year despite a groundswell of public and some political support to try and keep them here.

In June 2010, the three men were arrested and pulled from their jobs at the Shell station after accusations arose they were employed there illegally. The trio arrived in Canada in 2007 under a federal temporary foreign worker program and paid a recruiter to find them jobs at a gas station in Alberta. After being laid off and their work permits close to expiring, they got low-paying jobs at the Shell station in Thompson. The men testified at an immigration hearing their new employer told them he was working to try and complete required documentation and put them to work immediately. Employers must secure a labour market opinion (LMO) from the federal government before applying for a work permit for foreign workers. A LMO assesses whether or not the jobs offered can be filled by Canadians. The men said their employer told them to start work before securing a LMO. Their efforts to fight the immigration system in court ultimately failed and they were kicked out. Community members rallied around the men, with many signing petitions to the immigration minister and offering all manner of donations - cash, shelter and legal services - in the hopes of them being able to remain.

few years have been for those already in the country. There are about 800 strippers on work permits at various clubs across Canada, said Lambrinos. Many of them have been here for a few years and have renewed their work permits numerous times. What happens to them now . . . has anyone thought about that? he asked. These women opted to come to Canada because of our reputation of being fair. And this is how we treat them? Lambrinos said the real victims in this situation will be women who have been following the rules and are comfortable with their lives as exotic dancers. The manager of a Mississauga strip club, who refused to give his name, called the governments move discrimination. If there is such a big problem, then why are these places, these strip clubs still open? he said

Former B.C. Border Guard Guilty Of Cocaine Smuggling

A former Canadian border guard has been convicted for his part in a conspiracy that saw him wave vehicles through the border that were importing cocaine and guns into Canada. Baljinder Singh Kandola and his coaccused Shminder Singh Johal were arrested in October 2007 and police seized 208 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated $6 million and three firearms from the car of an accomplice. Court heard that Kandola had allowed two SUVs containing the contraband to enter the country unchecked. As early as March 2005, border officials had warned guards to watch for anything suspicious around Johal's company, Speedline Auto Sales, which was suspected of smuggling cocaine into Canada. Kandola's lawyers argued the guard was helping Johal pass through the border simply as a friend, and had no idea cocaine was involved. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Selwyn Romilly found Kandola guilty of charges of conspiracy and importation of cocaine, breach of trust and corruptly accepting money. Johal was found guilty of conspiracy to import cocaine and guns, possession of a controlled substance, and giving or offering to give money to an official. A sentencing hearing will be held for both men starting July 9.

A new border delay message sign on Highway 1 will make it easier for motorists and commercial vehicle operators travelling to the U.S. to plan their route and save time. The sign was announced by Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway Ed Fast and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom. The Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS) measures and displays border wait times to allow motorists to make informed travel decisions. The new sign is located on Highway 1 westbound, between the Whatcom Road Interchange and Highway 11. The new sign is part of the previous $2.6-million Highway 11/13 ATIS expansion, with the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia each contributing $1.3 million. "The Government of Canada is proud to participate in the expansion of the Advanced Traveller Information System," said the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. "Using advanced technologies such as this new sign at crossings along the B.C. and Washington State international border will help travellers decide when and where to cross this border and will reduce delays at these crossings." "We are committed to working with all partners to move people and goods more safely and efficiently across our borders," said Minister Lekstrom. "This

More than 3,000 crashes involving B.C. vehicles happen in Alberta each year and with the Calgary Stampede starting in a few days, many British Columbians are heading to Calgary to take part in the festivities. Drivers may face heavy traffic, unfamiliar road patterns and other distractions en route. Some may even find themselves in the unfortunate situation of being involved in a crash. However, itll now be easier for those drivers to get back on the road faster and continue with their adventures through a new partnership between ICBC and Fix Auto in Alberta. Partnerships like this provide peace of mind to British Columbians, said Kevin Falcon, Minister of Finance and Deputy Premier. These measures include expanding the ATIS, adding NEXUS lanes at three border crossings, FAST improvements at Highway 15, improving commercial vehicle access and adding an anti-idling signal system at the Peace Arch crossing.

Who wants to be a millionaire? Lotto Max will this week make history when it sets a new Canadian lottery record with a total of $100 million to be won. "It's a real new benchmark," said Andrea Marantz with the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. "It's never happened in Canada before so it's pretty exciting." Up for grabs in Friday's draw is a $50 million jackpot -- the highest permitted with Lotto Max -- plus 50 individual $1 million Maxmillions prizes. Normally the number of Maxmillions available is based on ticket sales, but this week there are 50 guaranteed, said Marantz. On June 25, 2012, there was a $50 million jackpot accompanied by 49 Maxmillions. "We've been close, but we've never been here before," said Marantz of this week's draw. "We have the chance to create 51 millionaires on Friday night." This is the fourth week the $50 million jackpot has been up for grabs -- draws on June 15, 22 and 29 were unsuccessful in matching winning numbers.

Lotto Max Making History With $100M In Jackpot Prizes

Marantz said when the jackpot is this high, ticket sales do increase, partly because groups of hopeful winners start forming. Each ticket sold for this week's draw is automatically entered to win the jackpot and all the Maxmillions, which must be matched exactly to claim the $1 million prizes. Draws will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and winning numbers are expected be posted later that night or early Saturday.

Simple Ways To Live A Healthy Lifestyle

The trick to healthy living is making small changes...taking more steps, adding fruit to your cereal, having an extra glass of water...these are just a few ways you can start living healthy without drastic changes. One of the biggest problems today is lack of activity. We know it's good for us but avoid it like the plague either because we're used to being sedentary or afraid that exercise has to be vigorous to be worth our time. The truth is, movement is movement and the more you do, the healthier you'll be. Even moderate activities like chores, gardening and walking can make a difference. Just adding a little movement to your life can: Reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes Improve joint stability Increase and improve range of movement Help maintain flexibility as you age Maintain bone mass Prevent osteoporosis and fractures Improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression Enhance self esteem Improve memory in elderly people Reduce stress So, even if you opt for small changes and a more modest weight loss, you can see the benefits are still pretty good. One study has found that just a 10% weight reduction helped obese patients reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and increase longevity. Simple Ways to Move Your Body You can start the process of weight loss now by adding a little more activity to your life. If you're not ready for a structured program, start small. Every little bit counts and it all adds up to burning more calories. Turn off the TV. Once a week, turn off the TV and do something a little more physical with your family. Play games, take a walk... almost anything will be more active than sitting on the couch. Walk more. Look for small ways to walk more. When you get the mail, take a walk around the block, take the dog for an extra outing each day or walk on your treadmill for 5 minutes before getting ready for work. Do some chores. Shoveling snow, working in the garden, raking leaves, sweeping the floor...these kinds of activities may not be 'vigorous' exercise, but they can keep you moving while getting your house in order. Pace while you talk. When you're on the phone, pace around or even do some cleaning while gabbing. This is a great way to stay moving while doing something you enjoy. Be aware. Make a list of all the physical activities you do on a typical day. If you find that the bulk of your time is spent sitting, make another list of all the ways you could move more--getting up each hour to stretch or walk, walk the stairs at work, etc. Learn about more ways to fit in exercise. Eating Well Eating a healthy diet is another part of the healthy lifestyle. Not only can a clean diet help with weight management, it can also improve your health and quality of life as you get older. You can use these tips for simple ways to change how you eat: Eat more fruit. Add it to your cereal, your salads or even your dinners Sneak in more veggies. Add them wherever you can--a tomato on your sandwich, peppers on your pizza, or extra veggies in your pasta sauce. Keep pre-cut or canned/frozen veggies ready for quick snacks. Switch your salad dressing. If you eat full-fat dressing, switch to something lighter and you'll automatically eat less calories. Eat low-fat or fat-free dairy. Switching to skim milk or fat free yogurt is another simple way to eat less calories without having to change too much in your diet. Make some substitutes. Look through your cabinets or fridge and pick 3 foods you eat every day. Write down the nutritional content and, the next time you're at the store, find lower-calorie substitutes for just those 3 items. Creating a healthy lifestyle doesn't have to mean drastic changes. In fact, drastic changes almost always lead to failure. Making small changes in how you live each day can lead to big rewards, so figure out what you can to be healthy today.

With so many credit card offers from Canadian banks to choose from, it really does help to do some research first to ensure you can understand them and more importantly compare them to find a credit card offer that suits your spending habits and financial situation. There is no denying that credit cards have their uses. In fact many people wont even bother to carry any cash when they have a credit card in their wallet. Herein lies the danger, it is too easy to pay for everything with your credit card. It is important for you to learn the important things you need to know when choosing a credit card and completing your online credit card application. There is no denying that credit cards have their uses. In fact many people don't even bother to carry any cash when they have a credit card in their wallet. Herein lies the danger, it is too easy to pay for everything with your credit card, be it household shopping, Internet purchases or booking a holiday. But the only way to manage this mode of spending is to learn to discipline yourself when using your credit card and knowing how to select a credit card; otherwise the debt collector can soon be knocking at your door. You have to be careful in choosing a credit card. But that's not to say credit cards are a bad option, it comes down to knowing what finance options are available to you, and which will best suit your needs and spending habits and how to choose a credit card. Sometimes a personal loan might be more appropriate for your purpose or a store account that lets you purchase goods with no interest. If you are booking travel online or shopping on the Internet, using a Visa or MasterCard debit card is an option to save you any interest charges. Debit cards have become more popular

in the last few years, particularly for those who haven't been able to afford a credit card. The advantage of debit cards is that they provide the convenience of credit cards, but you are using your own money as opposed to borrowing on credit. However, there are some advantages to credit cards if you know how to pick a credit card that works for you. Personal loans vs. credit cards Personal loans usually have lower interest rates than credit cards. When you borrow money, the credit provider will charge you interest on that loan until the debt is totally repaid. Because a personal loan generally has fixed term payments and lower interest, the debt tends to reduce faster than that of a credit card. Credit cards don't have a fixed time frame for payment, i.e. you can make minimum repayments per month, and still keep adding credit back on your card until your limit is reached. This is not a good way to go for reducing your debt, which is yet another reason you need to be careful in picking a credit card. Interest free shopping It's not at all unusual, to see major electrical and furniture retailers advertising "Nothing to pay for 6 months or until 2012". These offers are usually for big ticket items such as washing machines, entertainment packages or plasma TV's etc. Buying an item interest free lets you take home your purchase, and pay it off during the given period, or before the interest free period expires. If you opt for the latter, it might be nice to have your item immediately but how will you feel two years later, paying for something that is already two years old? This is just something to consider when you are thinking about how to choose a credit card. Interest free purchases have two

When it comes to choosing a credit card, the choice isn't always easy!

Are credit cards the best way to get finance?

types of payment methods: The item can be paid for by monthly installments, with a minimum payment required each month; or no payment is necessary during the interest free period, but the amount must be paid in full before the term expires. If you make the monthly payments or pay by the agreed time, no interest is charged. However, read your contract before you sign it as other fees could be applied, for example: Monthly account keeping fees Establishment fees Fees for payment handling If the item isn't paid by the due date, you will have interest charged on the balance outstanding, and be careful, this can be high. Quite often when you sign up for an interest free item in a store you will be offered a store credit card. This can be dangerous if you get carried away, making other purchases or withdrawing cash, since these cards do not carry interest free terms and the interest rates can be very high, as much as 28%. Which is why it's important to know how to select a credit card that suits you. Picking your credit card After considering all your options and deciding that you are going to choose a credit card for your finances, there are a few steps you can take to ensure you select a credit card that is right for you. Knowing how to pick a credit card, especially the right one is critical. Credit card selection depends in following aspects: The Interest Rates First and foremost, consider the interest rate. Often times, the credit card says that they have a 0% APR. That means that they have no interest. That's fantastic...Except for one small detail: that's probably just the introductory rate. Ensure that you read the terms and conditions (the fine print). This rate is only for a short period of time before it increases to the prime rate or

slightly above that rate. If you do find a credit card with 0% APR, try and see if you can't get one that has a 0% transfer rate so you can get the balance from a high interest credit card over to this no-interest credit card. That can be saving grace for your pocket and debt. But remember, the 0% APR on balance transfer would just be an introductory rate. Pay back the balance because the true interest will suddenly appear. Rewards Cards If you are like most people and want to try and get something back for your use of a credit card, look into getting a rewards card. These are cards that the companies provide that earn you different rewards. Some of these rewards could be anything from miles on an airplane to gift cards to stays in hotels to anything else really. The credit card company is the one that decides really just what they want to offer. They offer points on every dollar you spend and that really is a great thing. Annual Fees However, keep your eye on the annual fee. If you're not using the card all that much then paying whatever annual fee they have might actually cost you more than you're receiving in rewards. A rewards card is good for the person that is going to use it a lot and pay back the balance before the end of the month. That's the best way to reap the benefits of a rewards card. Finally, check the fine print on when the rewards becomes invalid. They aren't yours forever. You have to use them in a certain amount of time. Be on the lookout for cards which offer 'no point expiry', as this is an invaluable feature which will drastically increase the value of your rewards card.

Ethnic Indian Media In NZ Under Scrutiny: Grossly Divided, And Not Doing Its Job Thakur Ranjit Singh
Indian ethnic media came under scrutiny in the 4th Hindu Conference in Auckland, New Zealand last month with some hard talk on its state of affairs. There was complaint on lack of cooperation and unhealthy competition. If all Indian media owners were locked in a room, they would end up killing each other. Such animosity, bad blood and unhealthy completion was not doing any good to Indian journalism here, said one delegate, wishing to remain anonymous. What Indian journalism? quipped the other delegate. He said most Indian media were bereft of qualified journalists and journalism, and were mere moneymaking businesses, indulging incopy journalism and doing nothing towards the course of journalism. You name one Indian media in New Zealand which has qualified journalists, paid competitive salary and is interested to further the cause of journalism and truth, said a third one, a community leader, during tea break, wishing not to be identified in press. The session on serving community through media opened up frank and open discussion, with the commentators wishing to remain anonymous, for obvious fear of victimisation by media. However, not all were afraid to be named. Among them were two stalwarts of Indian media in New Zealand. They lived true to the adage that the role of media is to tell the truth and truth they spoke. This did not come from armchair critics, but from two respected leaders of Indian print media. Venkat Raman, editor of Indian Newslink and Dev Nadkarni, former founding editor of Indian Weekender, collectively agreed that ethnic Indian media left a great deal to be desired. Raman, who has over four decades of international media experience left Indian Foreign Service in 1967 to be a journalist because he wanted to tell truth and not be a mere spin doctor. He said that with the advent of fall of Murdoch media from grace, medias reputation in international market had taken a big dent. There is falling standards of reporting, editing and publishing; poverty of morality, scandals and Cheque Book Journalism, Raman said, adding that some mainstream media would use their cheque books to cover a celebrity wedding. In describing local media, Raman stated that the approach of Indian ethnic media in Auckland varies from one to the other. To some, journalism is a weekend hobby. Look at the News of the World, which scandalised the whole earth, the whole planet last year. To some, it is a fortnightly battle of survival and to others it is monthly bonanzas, which are able to harvest large advertising, and therefore revenue, he added. While being part of media fraternity, Raman was honest and straightforward

enough to enumerate some harsh realities of ethnic Indian media in New Zealand. He told that there was absence of unity and combined efforts in taking a united stand on either any community or journalistic issues. He told of unhealthy practices, lack of investigative journalism, unhealthy competition and the tendency of media to hide failures and overstate achievements. This was from the fact that media had more chances to make money from happy and satisfied people. Journalism was almost non-existent because, as copy journalist they had to conform to the taste of communality not to tell bad stories and churning out advertorials to get business at the cost of journalistic standard. We have advertorials advertisers invariably ask you to provide space for their commercial rather than editorial. So, ladies and gentleman, where there is space for providing truth, providing correct information? Raman asked an engrossed audience. While enumerating these shortfalls of Indian journalism bereft of journalism principles, Raman perhaps joked that he was unfit for his job, personifying the whole Indian media. The second, equally truthful and proficient speaker was Dev Nadkarni who comes from academia background with years of experience in local and international media, and at one time headed University of the South Pacific Journalism School. He spent four years at National Business Review (NBR) and had been a writer for the NZ Herald and other Australian publications as well as for three years as editor of Indian Weekender until recently. His topic was the gap between Indian media and the mainstream one.Is there a gap? Most certainly there is.

And the tendency is usually to lay the blame for the gap squarely on the doorstep of the mainstream media. It takes two to create a gap and it is not often that we look at our own selves to see what could be wrong at our end, he told delegates. He said it was quite normal for the mainstream society including mainstream media to look at ethnic communities as insular while at the same time, the Kiwi Indian community also suffered from the perception in some sections of the mainstream as being hopelessly divided. Nadkarni was critical of Indians who had made a conscious voluntary choice to make NZ their home and yet were at the forefront of creating cultural ghettos. Why not look at expanding their cultural offering into the mainstream instead? After all, the political systems here as well as the politicians are open to change and inclusiveness and diversity. Why not try to merge first rather than create a separate system while reaping the benefits of the mainstream system, he challenged Indian community leaders. He cited another case of divided Indian community with his conversation with a very very senior leader of the National Party where they were inundated with invitations to same Indian celebrations like Diwali and Independence Day in the same city on different days, with officials lobbying for their presence. He capped it with his experience of three Indian Independence Day celebrations in Samoa which only had ten Indian nationals. Nadkarni lamented the state of hopelessly divided Indian media when he told that he was invited to a NZ Chinese media function, but could never see that happening within

Indian media. He spoke about two sports and community awards being launched for the Indian community almost simultaneously, and questioned whose interests were they serving -the communities or the organisers'? He threw down the gauntlet to the Indian media to work together to help bridge the gap between the Indian media and the mainstream media with an innovative program, and volunteered to help achieve the objective. Just as we need to bridge the mainstream gap, we first need to bridge the gaps that prevent us from working together in the spirit of Saha na vavatu... [Spirit of working together, without hostility], he concluded. E-mail: thakurji@xtra.co.nz (Thakur Ranjit Singh attended 4th Hindu Conference at Sudima Hotel, Auckland Airport, New Zealand on 12 and 13 May 2012 as a representative of Waitakere Indian Association. He chaired the session on Serving community through media.)

Child Abuse and Neglect

Continued From Last Week

Recognizing Abusive Behavior In Yourself Do you see yourself in some of these descriptions, painful as it may be? Do you feel angry and frustrated and dont know where to turn? Raising children is one of lifes greatest challenges and can trigger anger and frustration in the most even tempered. If you grew up in a household where screaming and shouting or violence was the norm, you may not know any other way to raise your kids. Recognizing that you have a problem is the biggest step to getting help. If you yourself were raised in an abusive situation, that can be extremely difficult. Children experience their world as normal. It may have been normal in your family to be slapped or pushed for little to no reason or that mother was too drunk to cook dinner. It may have been normal for your parents to call you stupid, clumsy or worthless. Or it may have been normal to watch your mother get beaten up by your father. It is only as adults that we have the perspective to step back and take a hard look at what is normal and what is abusive. Read the above sections on the types of abuse and warning signs. Do any of those ring a bell for you now? Or from when you were a child? The following is a list of warning signs that you may be crossing the line into abuse: How do you know when youve crossed the line? 1. You cant stop the anger. What starts as a swat on the backside may turn into multiple hits getting harder and harder. You may shake your child harder and harder and finally throw him or her down. You find yourself screaming louder and louder and cant stop yourself. 2. You feel emotionally disconnected from your child. You may feel so overwhelmed that you dont want anything to do with your child. Day after day, you just want to be left alone and for your child to be quiet. 3. Meeting the daily needs of your child seems impossible. While everyone struggles with balancing dressing, feeding, and getting kids to school or other activities, if you continually cant manage to do it, its a sign that something might be wrong. 4. Other people have expressed

concern. It may be easy to bristle at other people expressing concern. However, consider carefully what they have to say. Are the words coming from someone you normally respect and trust? Denial is not an uncommon reaction. Breaking the cycle of child abuse If you have a history of child abuse, having your own children can trigger strong memories and feelings that you may have repressed. This may happen when a child is born or at later ages when you remember specific abuse to you. You may be shocked and overwhelmed by your anger, and feel like you cant control it. But you can learn new ways to manage your emotions and break your old patterns. Remember, you are the most important person in your childs world. Its worth the effort to make a change and you dont have to go it alone. Help and support are available. Tips for changing your reactions 1. Learn what is age appropriate and what is not. Having realistic expectations of what children can handle at certain ages will help you avoid frustration and anger at normal child behavior. For example, newborns are not going to sleep through the night without a peep and toddlers are not going to be able to sit quietly for extended periods of time. 2. Develop new parenting skills. While learning to control your emotions is critical, you also need a game plan of what you are going to do instead. Start by learning appropriate discipline techniques and how to set clear boundaries for your children. Parenting classes, books and seminars are a way to get this information. You can also turn to other parents for tips and advice. 3. Take care of yourself. If you are not getting enough rest and support or youre feeling overwhelmed, you are much more likely to succumb to anger. Sleep deprivation, common in parents of young children, adds to moodiness and irritabilityexactly what you are trying to avoid. 4. Get professional help. Breaking the cycle of abuse can be very difficult if the patterns are strongly entrenched. If you cant seem to stop yourself no matter how hard you try, its time to get help, be it therapy, parenting classes or other interventions. Your children will thank you for it. 5. Learn how you can get your emotions under control. The first step to getting your emotions under control is realizing that they are there. If you were abused as a child, you may have an especially difficult time getting in touch with your range of emotions. You may have had to deny or repress them as a child and now they spill out without your control. For a step by step process on how you can develop your emotional intelligence.

In a bid to link pioglitazone and bladder cancer, researchers conducted a systematic review and analysis of clinical trials and observational studies involving over 2.6 million patients. "We observed an increased risk of bladder cancer associated with the use of thiazolidinediones," writes Jeffrey Johnson from the School of Public Health, University of Alberta and study co-author, the Canadian Medical Association Journal reports. Thiazolidinediones, including Pioglitazone, introduced in the late 1990s, are also known as glitazones, a class of drugs used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, according to an Alberta statement. "In particular, use of pioglitazone was associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer based on a pooled estimate from three cohort studies involving more than 1.7 million individuals," adds Johnson. The researchers also looked at a possible association with rosiglitazone, another type of thiazolidinedione, but did not see an effect.

Chronic Pain Is All In Your Head

When people have similar injuries, some may end up with chronic pain while others recover and are pain free. Now, a new Northwestern Medicine study, the first longitudinal brain imaging study to track participants with a new back injury, has found that the chronic pain is all in their heads quite literally. The study found for the first time that chronic pain develops the more two sections of the brain --- related to emotional and motivational behaviour --- talk to each other. The more they communicate, the greater the chance a patient will develop chronic pain. The finding provides a new direction for developing therapies to treat intractable pain, which affects 30 to 40 million adults. Researchers were able to predict, with 85 percent accuracy at the beginning of the study, which participants would go on to develop chronic pain based on the level of interaction between the frontal cortex and the nucleus accumbens. "For the first time we can explain why people who may have the exact same initial pain either go on to recover or develop chronic pain," said A. Vania Apakarian, senior author of the paper and professor of physiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "The injury by itself is not enough to explain the ongoing pain. It has to do with the injury combined with the state of the brain. This finding is the culmination of 10 years of our research," Apakarian noted. The more emotionally the brain reacts to the initial injury, the more likely the pain will persist after the injury has healed. "It may be that these sections of the brain are more excited to begin with in certain individuals, or there may be genetic and environmental influences that predispose these brain regions to interact at an excitable level," Apkarian said. The nucleus accumbens is an important center for teaching the rest of the brain how to evaluate and react to the outside world, Apkarian noted, and this brain region may use the pain signal to teach the rest of the brain to develop chronic pain. "Now we hope to develop new therapies for treatment based on this finding," Apkarian added. Chronic pain participants in the study also lost gray matter density, which is likely linked to fewer synaptic connections or neuronal and glial shrinkage, Apkarian said. Brain synapses are essential for communication between neurons.

'Bored' Office Workers Pile On Pounds Increasing Coffee Intake Can Cut Risk Of Most Common Form Of Skin Cancer By Gorging On Unhealthy Snacks
Boring desk jobs are fuelling obesity epidemic as employees are opting for unhealthy snacks to pass the day. Competition to bring the best cakes into the office on special occasions like birthdays is also contributing to bulging waistlines, a recent survey has revealed. Researchers found that 42 percent of office workers gained up to a lot of weight in a year as they indulged on snacks such as cake and biscuits during their working hours. Boredom was named as the biggest factor in workers reaching for a treat while others relied on a sugar rush to get them through the working day. 50 percent of men questioned admitted to having a snacking addiction. 30 percent of men said that they felt left out if they avoided calorie-laden goodies being passed around the office while just 17 percent of women acknowledged to finding it impossible to resist office treats. However, despite having greater willpower, the survey by men's fashion retailer 'High and Mighty' found more women put on weight over the course of a year. Half of the women surveyed said that they put on weight in the last year in contrast to 40 percent of their male counterparts. "You're going to lose and gain weight throughout your life, it's unavoidable. But our research seems to show that you're more likely to gain weight during your office life," the media quoted Gill Politis as saying. Politis, managing director of men's fashion retailer High and Mighty, blamed the 'tremendous camaraderie as well as competition' in the workplace with people bringing in treats leading to a 'competitive spirit that says "my chocolate cake is better than yours"'. "It's the perfect storm that conspires against the diet-conscious," she said. The research into office weight gain was instigated by the retailer as part of a programme aimed at matching fashion with lifestyle changes. For those who do change size during their office life, Politis recommends wardrobe alterations. "The worst thing you can do if you put on or lose a couple of pounds is to stick to the same clothes. They're unflattering and will exaggerate your size," she added.

Try Sprinting To Shed Belly Fat

Want to shed that belly fat? Try sprinting, say Australian researchers. Just 20 minutes of sprints on an exercise bike, three times a week, will do. It could replace seven hours of jogging over the week for a similar result, according to Steve Boutcher, associate professor at the University of New South Wales, who led the study. "Sprints are a very time efficient form of exercise. The sprint program, LifeSprints, reduced visceral fat with seven times less exercise time and has a much greater impact on cardiovascular and metabolic health than reductions of subcutaneous fat stores in the legs and arms," Boutcher was quoted as saying in the Journal of Obesity. Men who participated in the research, lost two kg of body fat, 17 percent of visceral fat, and put on 1.2 kg of muscle in their legs and trunk after the 12week exercise bike sprints programme, said a university statement. "Other studies using aerobic exercise, such as continuous jogging, have found that the amount of exercise needed to produce a similar decrease in visceral fat was around seven hours per week for 14 weeks," Boutcher said. The team of researchers has previously studied the impact of the sprinting programme on women, which also showed a significant loss of body fat from stationary cycling for 20 minutes, three times a week. LifeSprints were also good for those who wanted to boost muscle mass. "Participation in regular aerobic exercise typically results in little or no gain in muscle mass, whereas moderately hard resistance exercise over months may increase muscle mass. The amount of LifeSprints exercise, however, needed to significantly increase muscle mass appears to be much less," added Boutcher.

We Suffer Prejudices In Bollywood: Salman Khan Back To His Bratty Ways?? Ekta Kapoor
trailer. A-rating programming is allowed on TV after 11 p.m., and then also we are not allowed to show anything. There is so much prohibition in society for everything and because anyone can raise a question. Everyone is so scared. I dont blame the censors. They are under so much pressure. People are ready to file a PIL (public interest litigations) against everything its really curbing the creativity. I thought the first part of my series in 2005 would have to face all this. We are in 2012, for gods sake! It really seems like the world is coming to an end, she quipped. But she points out the biggest challenge is that any kind of double meaning in Hindi sounds crass. Very strong research once said that the real problem with our language is that it is so restrictive. The American language has extended itself to slang and made it more colloquial, Ekta observed. Hindi has not taken any such extension because of which there has been stagnation in the language. So it is much tougher to write a Hindi comedy with double meaning because we didnt want to go crass, added the filmmaker, who has produced films like Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Ragini MMS and The Dirty Picture. However, she believes the Sachin Yardi-directed movie, releasing July 27, has adult humour in measured amount. We wanted to go funny with adult humour. Some portions could probably hurt some sensibilities. But on the whole, the film has tried to keep its humour funny without being offensive, she said. Cracking jokes in Hindi is an uphill task because they sound worse than they sound in English, said Ekta. Delhi Belly was made in English because they clearly realised the power of that language in making things sound much better than they are. For us, it has been a struggle to make Hindi a language where double meaning doesnt go into becoming another lowest common denominator and this just turns out to be another film, said the filmmaker. She has brought her brother Tusshar Kapoor and actor Riteish Deshmukh together after seven years for the franchise, which hits the screens July 27.

Ekta Kapoor She describes Kyaa Kool Hai Hum series as Bollywoods answer to American Pie series. But Ekta Kapoor is miffed that the censor board has snipped three scenes from the theatrical trailer of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum. She blames it to existing prejudices in the Hindi film industry. Anurag Kashyaps Gangs Of Wasseypur had coarse and crass language too, but it released without cuts. So what is the hullabaloo around Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum? She replied saying, Theres a big difference here. Thats Anurag Kashyap you know how it is. Everything that Balaji (Motion Pictures) does or any mainstream filmmaker does, will always be considered to be cheap and crass. If Dibakar (Banerjee) would have made this film, it would have a totally different effect. So we always suffer prejudices in Bollywood, and we just fight constantly, she added. The 37-year-old is upset that the censors are not letting the movies original promos reach the theatres, but she doesnt blame them for double standards either. We never had issues in the films first part. I think our society was so much cooler at that time. Now suddenly everyone raises a question, everyone asks 15 questions. So we have a sanitised, boring promo in the theatre for the ones who will be seeing Bol Bachchan, said Ekta who was in town to show the uncut version of the

Recently, a magazine stated that Salman Khan suddenly turned a baddie during a patchwork shoot of YRFs Ek Tha Tiger in Film City. It was reported that the actor lost his cool and apparently hit his ex girl Katrina Kaif with a stick, for stepping out of her vanity van in a figure hugging, cleavage revealing short dress. He also bad mouthed her with foul words. However, the actresss friend denie the violent act. This is completely untrue. Salman and Katrina chose to work in the same film because there was no animosity between them. They got along famously during the Dublin and the Istanbul schedules. Salman cares for Katrina a lot. She is like family, said the friend. The friend added, People make up a lot of stories. Only because they

couldnt keep up to their commitment of making an appearance at an awards function, rumours started flying. If the magazine is to be gone by, Katrina Kaif hurried back into the vanity van and is said to have called up Kareena Kapoor for help. How did the magazine know what happened inside Katrinas vanity when she had locked it? Kareena visiting her friend Salman doesnt necessarily have to be instigated by a phone call from his co-star, added the friend. Katrina however, has no comments to make, about this whole story. Her friend added, Kat has many projects lined up. She doesnt have time for silly rumours generated by the media. In fact she had to turn down Karan Johars offer of Dostana 2 because she couldnt adjust her dates.

Manoj Kumar
zero diya mere Bharat ne, duniya ko tab ginti aayee...' was a fitting reply which showed his pride in what India was. It was with the same genuine pride that he had installed Nehru, Shastri and Indira on a pedestal along with Bhagat Singh and Lal Bahadur Shastri in his films. I am sure it was not sycophancy, as his sincerity showed, and except for a 'tax exemption' Manoj Kumar did not get any benefit from the Congress. Not any that I know of. He even refused to contest in the elections when he was offered a ticket! Manoj Kumar repeated his success in 'Roti Kapda aur Makaan'. 'Shor' was another good film. He picked up a two para news-story and made a film out of it. The story was about one of those ironies of life: a father cycled non-stop for 14 days, to break a record and win a cash prize to pay for a surgery for his mute son. When the son regains his voice, the father meets with an accident and loses his hearing! Few among the Indian film makers could make a film with this theme, but Manoj did. By now, he had become close to Indira Gandhi who he used to refer to as 'Madam'. It is during this period that politics started corrupting him. In the mid-seventies, when the country was seething at the tyranny let loose by Mrs Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi, like it happens to all who are too close to power, Manoj lost touch with his audience. Manoj Kumar announced his next film, 'Naya Bharat'. To Manoj it may have been intended as another 'Upkaar', but I see it as no less than a propaganda film. To me the context was the compulsory projection of the 20-point programme on the State-controlled DD and All India Radio. This was the height of sycophancy. Salim-Javed were to write the script. Fortunately for him, the film was not made. The Emergency was lifted and the great Indian public rejected Indira and Sanjay, the way I believe they will reject Sonia Gandhi. If this compromise of Manoj reduced his stature in my view, I suspect he fell in his own esteem, in 1984. The massacre of the Sikhs in New Delhi after the assassination of Indira Gandhi would have made any self-respecting Indian, (especially if he happened to be a Punjabi , for whom Bhagat Singh was a hero,) boil. I am sure Manoj Kumar must have realized the futility of all his 'Upkaars' and Bharats. What had Manoj Kumar to show for all these years...films with messages he didn't believe in. Okay, they brought in a lot of moolah but that wasn't what made him feel great. It was Bharat that made him proud. It was the shots he had devised, which, when the Dheeraj Kumars of this world copied, elated him. It was a Manoj Kumar sans convictions who laid an egg called 'Clerk'. He went into his shell. Quietly, without any fanfare, he switched to Hindutva. But now, the convictions were missing. It was a further disillusioned Manoj Kumar that has made 'Jai Hind'. Manoj Kumar has no beliefs left. Manoj Kumar was born on July 24, 1937, at Abbottabad. He is an Indian actor and director in the Bollywood film industry. He is known for acting in and directing films with patriotic themes; for this reason he has been given the nickname of Mr. Bharat. Manoj's image as the patriotic hero started with the 1965 film Shaheed, which was based on the life of Bhagat Singh. With memories of the IndiaPakistan War still fresh, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri asked him to create a film based on the popular slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kissan". The result was Manoj Kumar's magnum opus and his directorial debut, Upkar (1967). In it, he managed to convincingly play both a jawan and a kissan. The film was also noted for the famous song Mere Desh Ki Dharti, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and sung by Mahendra Kapoor. Upkar won Manoj Kumar his first Filmfare Best Director Award. The film was a huge hit and made Manoj the authority on Bollywood patriotism. After dabbling in various roles in the late 1960s, Manoj returned to patriotic themes in Purab Aur Paschim, in which life in the East and West are juxtaposed. In 1972, he starred in Be-Imaan (for which he won the Filmfare Best Actor Award) and directed and starred in Shor. The latter, opposite Jaya Bhaduri, was not a huge box office success, but it did feature the memorable song Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai, a duet by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh which was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. In fact, Manoj would have decided to retire after 'Kranti'. But it doesn't happen. Politicians and film stars never retire. 'Kranti' was his crowning glory. He fulfilled his desire to direct Dilip Kumar, who he had admired, imitated and even disliked. He proved to the world that he was the only director who didn't let Dilip Kumar interfere in his film. 'Kranti' was totally a Manoj

Kumar film, it didn't have the slightest stamp of Dilip Kumar, and usually present in the latter's films. Manoj's diktat to all his stars was 'Aap aao apni marzi se, lekin jao meri marzi se'. He was the King and in those days, he was offered a crore of rupees for acting and directing an outside film. He rejected these offers. He worked at pace leisurely. Not for him the hurried shots and rush jobs. Like Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar has always interfered in some of the films he acted in and it showed. I am not sure about his famous suspense film with Sadhana, 'Woh Kaun Thi'. Manoj Kumar has privately claimed credit for the direction of this and some other films - but the Manoj Kumar stamp is visible even in 'Beimaan', 'Dus Numbri' and 'Yaadgar'. Songs like 'Iktaara bole...do tarah ke leader hote hain...' are relevant to the Sonias, Laloos and Rabris of today too. Songs and lyrics made social comments and yet, the films were commercially successful. Successful socially relevant films were impossibility till Manoj Kumar came along. Somehow the 'greatness of India and Indian culture' had never excited the viewers earlier. Manoj Kumar officially began film directing with 'Upkaar'. Mediocre photographers use clichd images to depict contrast; like juxtaposing Bombay's slums with its skyscrapers etc. 'Purab aur Pachhim' did the same, but with a finesse which is still remembered, and copied. Subhash Ghai did it in 'Pardes', and Rishi Kapoor imitated in 'Aa Ab Laut Chalen'. Rishi, in fact, borrowed a video cassette of this film from Manoj Kumar, and the inspiration is there for all to see in Akshaye Khanna and Suman Rangnathan. I can never forget the applause Bharat received when he answered the disillusioned NRI Pran's taunt: 'India's contribution is zero...zero...zero'. 'Jab

The promos of Ekta Kapoor's forthcoming film Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum (KSKHH) have already created a lot of buzz what with its raunchy and at times controversial lines. Now it seems that producer Ekta Kapoor and director Sachin Yardi have had an argument of sorts over a particular scene in the film. The scene in question has Tusshar Kapoor mouthing lines like "Yeh Aaj Kal Ke Heroines Ke Naam Kya Kya Hain? Fakhri? Penty?" While the film is an outrageous comedy, Ekta felt that taking digs at actresses Nargis Fakhri and Diana Penty was not in good light and requested director Sachin Yardi to delete the scene. However, Yardi felt otherwise and refused to comply with Ekta's demand causing an argument between them. Now it remains to be seen who wins this argument and whether the scene in question is retained in the final cut or not?

At The Movies

Xanadu (G) * * * * * Heaven Sent!

By ROBERT WALDMAN

Staight from the Gods comes Xanadu, a rousing grand finale for the Arts Club Theatre this season. Leaving on a high note is this entertaining musical comedy now belting out the hits at the Arts Club Theatre's Granville Island Stage. Whether you like nostalgia or plain fun this two act tour de force is definitely a toe tapping experience not to be missed. Blessed with an all star cast director Dean Paul Gibon does justice to the original hit movie. Fans of the original hit Universal Pictures may well remember the title role played by Australian star Olivia Newton John. Taking off where Olivia left off is ancient muse Kira, played with absolute delight Marlie Collins she sets just the perfect tone for this illfated romance pitting her and The Gods against a mere mortal from Earth named Sonny. Out to make his mark in the art world is one Gaelan Beatty who miraculously meets up with the enchanting blonde goddess who at first can't believe her good fortune. Love affairs come and go and this one is a real doozy. Most of the action takes place in Venice Beach,

California where this lowly artist can't get on track - that is until he meets the girl of his dreams. Complications arrive in a hurry as this bewitching woman is a child of Zeus and her relatives aren't about to let her "settle" for a man from Earth. Terrific songs that are a delightful blast from the past make Xanadu a wonderful two hour treat. All the cast definitely look to be having a good time and the songs will grown on you. Show stopping tunes like Evil Woman, All Over The World will put you in a spin while some of the decorations and costumes are to die for. Among the highlights are two female muses played by the boys, in the form of Vincent Tong and J. Cameron Barnett whose presence will grow on you. Ancient curses and evil machinations mesh with wonderful dialogue to pull this sharp-witted musical off in flying colours. Standing ovations are at times common in the theatre world. In the case of this production it's truly worth it and fitting for all ages. Disco lives as does show business thanks to this wonderful recreation of a screen classic. Energy

abounds in this classic show which also includes such hits as Suddenly and Have You Ever Been Mellow. Each cast member also has a great voice which further enhances the appeal of this lively production that never has a dull moment. It's all about love and

dreams and hope. Be sure to catch Xanadu at the Vancouver Arts Club Theatre on Granville Island. Xanadu is running from now until August 4. For show times and tickets information call (604) 687-1644 or go to www.artsclub.com

Conquering Salary Question Fears

Today we're discussing how to confidently handle the most-feared job interview question: The Salary Question. In this segment, I'll give you several different ways to respond to this question and tell you what to do if interviewers ask multiple times. By giving you several options, you'll be able to create a response that feels comfortable and effective for you. I'll also describe what to do before you're asked The Salary Question and provide specific examples of what to say. I'll not only give you the strategy, I'll give you some examples. Career advisers generally agree that it is best to not be the one to first provide or mention a salary number. The jobseeker risk is high when replying too early to the salary question because the salary number is used to screen candidates from further consideration. Stating your salary requirements before you know the company's salary range is risky. Your overall strategy is to delay stating a specific salary number until the company has decided to hire you. Any discussion of compensation before this time runs a high risk of eliminating you from further consideration. Companies ask The Salary Question to ensure that your compensation is compatible with what they are willing to pay someone for a specific job. The problem is that when this discussion occurs too early in the interview process, the interviewers do not know how your compensation requirements compare to the value you can deliver. In the end, it is all about paying for results. Through the interview process, you have the opportunity to discuss the results you can deliver. At the end of the process, you are in a much stronger position to discuss compensation because the hiring manager understands the value you can deliver. It is in your best interest to delay the salary discussion until the company has decided it really wants to hire you. Companies are much less aggressive using The Salary Question when the job market is strong for the job applicants. Job markets favoring the applicant force hiring managers to focus on getting the best value from an employee. During a weak job market, companies feel they have the upper hand and can be more aggressive screening job seekers regarding salary. Know the Salary Range Before They Ask You Before the interview or phone screen, research the salary range for your occupation. Salary.com and Payscale. com are two web sites that provide salary range data. You can find out what companies are paying for your occupation in your industry and location. Corporations use data from these web sites to compare internal salary ranges against what other companies are paying for similar positions. When using the sites I just Learn How to Get an Offer on Your Next Job Interview mentioned, you are researching salary factors: quality of the opportunity; ranges from many companies. The quality of the company and the people salary range for a specific company I'd be working with; growth potential; may be quite different, but it is likely to location; and finally compensation. be similar to the broader salary ranges Compensation is the least important for your locale. criteria I use to evaluate a position. So far, I'm impressed with what I have Your Strategy for Handling The learned about this opportunity and Salary Question remain very interested. What is the When you are asked The Salary salary range you have established for Question, your response strategy is as this role? follows: Remember that the first person to give 1. Don't give them a salary a salary number is at a disadvantage. number You want to discuss salary only when 2. State your interest in the they are absolutely convinced they position can't live without you. It is at this point 3. Express your openness to that you have negotiating leverage discuss salary later and not until then. Here is an example of how this strategy Craft a response that feels comfortable might sound when the interviewer asks, for you and practice saying it. Decide What are your salary requirements? right now that you are not going to You smile and confidently say: discuss salary until you are ready. I'd rather not give you a specific salary Using this response strategy and the number right now. I am very interested examples I've just given you could in this opportunity with your firm, and make the difference between you I'll be thrilled to discuss salary after getting a job or being eliminated from we've mutually concluded I'm a strong further consideration. Your response to fit for your company. this frequent question will definitely I can hear you saying to me, Hmm, that influence the salary you are offered. You might work some of the time, Michael, are worth it! So get ready to confidently but I'm not comfortable saying those handle The Salary Question and a words to avoid giving them a number. few other difficult questions and you All right! Let's try another approach. will secure a great job. If you're already a user of Interview Mastery you'll recognize this strategy from the Interview Mastery module titled Handling the Salary Question. Second Time They Ask: Salary Range Sometimes interviewers ask about salary a second time or in a different way. They often ask, What is your current or most recent salary? This question is more specific and feels more difficult to handle without providing a salary number. Your response strategy remains the same; you don't want to state a number first. So your response to their second inquiry about your salary might sound like the following: I understand that you need to make sure my salary requirements and your salary range are aligned. Please share with me the salary range, and I'll tell how my salary fits in your range. This second response almost always works, and the company representative reveals the salary range. Then you respond by saying approximately where your salary requirements are within their range. You're not going to let me off the hook this easy. You're probably asking, What do I say if they ask me again to give them a salary number? Third Time They Ask: Multiple Job Factors If the interviewer or phone screener asks you a third time about your salary your strategy remains the same and you can say the following: When deciding on a position, I consider the following Handling difficult interview questions can be uncomfortable unless you know how to best handle them and have practiced responding to these questions. This is why Interview Mastery was builtto help you be confident and ready to get hired during your next job interview. The job interview is the most important moment in your job search. The career success you enjoy is directly related to your job interview skills. When you have interview skills, you control your career during the bad economic times and the good times. Good luck on your next interview. You're going to be awesome! Al Kamal, MBA President Arza Employment Services Ltd Vancouver, BC info@arza.ca

Melbourne, Australia
Global University Cities Index (since 2006) and the top 20 Global Innovation Cities by the 2thinknow Global Innovation Agency (since 2007). The metropolis is also home to the world's largest tram network. The main airport serving Melbourne is Melbourne Airport. Avalon Airport is currently being developed into Melbourne's second international airport. Melbourne was declared a city by letters patent of Queen Victoria, issued on 25 June 1847.The Port Phillip District became the separate Colony of Victoria in 1851, with Melbourne as its capital. With the Aboriginal population dispossessed of their lands and their management of fire having been disrupted for almost 15 years, the Colony experienced for the first time its largest-ever bushfires, burning about 25% of the land area of Victoria on Black Thursday on 6 February 1851. Victorian gold rush An influx of interstate and overseas migrants, particularly Irish, German and Chinese, saw the development of slums including a temporary "tent city" established on the southern banks of the Yarra. Chinese migrants founded a Chinatown in 1851, which remains the longest continuous Chinese settlement in the Western World. In the aftermath of the Eureka Rebellion, mass public support for the plight of the miners in Melbourne resulted in major political changes to the colony. The various nationalities involved in the Eureka Stockade revolt and Burke and Wills expedition give some indication of migration flows in the second half of the nineteenth century. Land boom and bust The economic boom of the Victorian gold rush peaked during the 1880s, by which time Melbourne had become the richest city in the world, and the largest after London in the British Empire. Melbourne hosted two international exhibitions at the large purpose-built Exhibition Building between 1880 and 1890, spurring the construction of several prestigious hotels including the Menzies, Federal and the Grand (Windsor). In 1855 the Melbourne Cricket Club secured possession of its now famous ground, the MCG. Australian Football commenced in earnest about 1858, and Yarra rowing clubs and "regattas" became popular about the same time. In 1861 the Melbourne Cup was first run. In 1864 Melbourne acquired its first public monumentthe Burke and Wills statue.

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia. The Melbourne City Centre is the hub of the greater metropolitan area and the Census statistical divisionof which "Melbourne" is the common name. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned at the estuary of the Yarra River (at the northernmost point of the bay). The metropolitan area then extends south from the city centre, along the eastern and western shorelines of Port Phillip, and expands into the hinterland. The city centre is situated in the municipality known as the City of Melbourne, and the metropolitan area consists of a further 30 municipalities.

Melbourne was founded in 1835 (47 years after the European settlement of Australia) by settlers from Launceston

in Van Diemen's Land. It was named by governor Richard Bourke in 1837, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lambthe 2nd Viscount Melbourne. Melbourne was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847. In 1851, it became the capital city of the newly created colony of Victoria. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. After the federation of Australia in 1901, it then served as the interim seat of government of the newly created nation of Australia until 1927. Often referred to as the "cultural capital of Australia", Melbourne is the birthplace of cultural institutions such as Australian film (as well as the world's first feature film), Australian television, Australian rules football, the Australian impressionist art movement (known as the Heidelberg School) and Australian dance styles such as New Vogue and the Melbourne Shuffle. It is also a major centre for contemporary and traditional Australian music. Melbourne was ranked as the world's most livable city in the World's Most Livable Cities ratings by the Economist Group's Intelligence Unit in August, 2011. It was also ranked in the top ten Global University Cities by RMIT's

The discovery of gold in Victoria in 1851 led to the Victorian gold rush, and Melbourne, which served as the major port and provided most services for the region, experienced rapid growth. Within months, the city's population had increased by nearly three-quarters, from 25,000 to 40,000 inhabitants. Thereafter, growth was exponential and by 1865, Melbourne had overtaken Sydney as Australia's most populous city.

Not all shops within the mall will necessarily be open for business on Sundays. Tourism oriented outlets do have a 7 day trade as do convenience stores supplying basic needs. Banks are open Monday through Friday and generally between the hours of 9.00 to 4.00. Most towns have automatic teller machines to cater for after-hours transactions. All major city airports have currency exchange kiosks for changing foreign currency. Australian currency consists of 5c 10c 20c 50c $1 $2 as coins. Notes are $5 $10 $20 $50 and $100. Electrical Appliances Australian electricity supply is 240 volts. Most electronics stores stock wall plug adaptors for appliances with different pin arrangements. Always check if your 110v appliance has automatic switching for a 240v supply. If not, it is recommended that you get an 110v/240v transformer before leaving home. Weather and the Environment Protect against sunburn at all times, but especially in summer. Use a wide brimmed hat, 15+ sunscreen, sunglasses, protective clothes and shoes. Australian sunlight has very high UV levels and skin damage occurs rapidly, especially during the middle of the day. Check approaching storm fronts for signs of a greenish tinge. This often indicates a hail storm that may cause damage to persons and property. Always observe correct beach safety. Swim only at patrolled beaches. Only swim between flagged areas. If in doubt, ask. Always check for warning signs. If you intend to swim in shallow coastal waters north of Gladstone, make it your business to be informed about box jellyfish (marine stingers). Generally found in shallow water near creek or river mouths, more likely after local rain, usually absent in rough water. Not usually found over deep water or coral. Stinger season is usually from December to March in the Gladstone (south) area and longer, from October to June, in the Cairns (north) area. Most popular beaches in the stinger areas are netted to provide swimmer protection. Always wear thick soled shoes when walking in shallow tropical waters or reef walking as protection against the highly camouflaged stonefish. It has dorsal spikes which will rupture the skin of the foot and inject poison causing extreme swelling and agony. Deaths have been recorded as a result of stonefish poisoning. There are other poisonous creatures on the reef such as some of the cone shell species and coral snakes, both of which are capable of causing death. If you intend spending time on the Barrier Reef without expert guidance, ensure you have a sound knowledge of what can hurt you before you start.

2012 Lexus LS 460

"Any vehicle in this segment could be considered the closest thing to a limousine without actually being one." The driver and front passenger only get 10-way and eight-way power adjustable seats, respectively. Granted thats not as much as the 14-way adjustable front seats offered by BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but again, its tough to complain once youve planted your bum and you feel like youre being whisked away on a proverbial cloud. This cloud may spew exhaust and weigh well over 4,000 pounds (its still white though!), but itll glide over roads in virtually any condition you can imagine, good or bad. The optional front and rear adaptive variable suspensions may have something to do with that, and if that isnt enough, the suspensions are even built around antivibration sub-frames. Anyone who thinks Lexus doesnt pay attention to detail is crazy. Apart from the wood trim peppered throughout, youd be hard-pressed to find a surface within the cockpit that doesnt feel soft and smooth. Youre also treated to a fantastic Mark Levinson sound system, adjustable suspension controls, 10 airbags (eight of those standard on all LS 460s), and even variable speed (zuh?!) windows. Not all the technology is what its cracked up to be. The LS 460 can park itself, but the system is finicky at best and terribly frustrating at worst. You could spend five minutes letting the car park itself perfectly for you, or you could use your own skill to slide into a spot in five seconds and end up slightly crooked, but five minutes ahead. Interestingly, the LS also hasnt adopted Lexus mouse-like Remote Touch infotainment controller. If you abhor BMWs iDrive or Audis MMI and prefer an array of buttons, look to the Lexus. Like the LS 460, every competitor uses a big V8 engine. Lexus offering is plenty strong (with a great exhaust note to boot), but falls short when stacked up against the other guys. There are multiple suspension settings, but I cant help but feel like the LS is just going through the motions when its pushed around corners. Then again, its probably safe to assume the sporting prowess of this vehicle will rarely be tested by the average driver. The LS 460 offers a sublime experience in terms of comfort, but if youre a driver who wants to be more immersed in what your car can do performancewise, the competitors will make your choice more difficult.

Lexus LS 460 thinks of everything

Lexus continues to take on some of the most sublime luxury sedans from Europe for the 2012 model year with its venerable LS 460. While conflicts on the battlefield are usually won with guns, bullets, and brute force, the battle between these vehicles takes place on asphalt and is fought with hefty V8s, a dizzying array of technology, and hyperbolic terminology. This years LS 460 is essentially a carryover from 2011, with the exception of a new Sportech Package which adds a unique grille and side skirts to the existing Technology Package. My tester, as it turns out, is equipped with the Sportech Package, which has a clear focus on adding to the comfort of rear seat passengers. The package may add nearly $10,000 to the vehicles base MSRP, but thats still less than the extra $16,000 youd be paying to upgrade to the long wheelbase LS,

which increases rear legroom by more than 30 mm. Any vehicle in this segment could be considered the closest thing to a limousine without actually being one, so the rear seat experience had better be darn spectacular. So it is with the LS 460. It may have less rear legroom than competitors from Audi, BMW, Jaguar, and MercedesBenz, but theres still plenty of space back there for a couple tall passengers to stretch out. The Sportech Package puts the vehicle more in line with those competitors in terms of both price and features. With it, rear passengers in the Lexus are treated to seats that have power recline and lumbar support, memory settings, heating and air conditioning, a massage function, and more. Id say theyre treated a heck of a lot better than the chumps up front, in fact.

Safely Share The Road This Summer

Motorcyclists are seven times more likely to be killed in a crash than other road users. To help reduce the number of motorcycle-related crashes and increase the safety of road users, its important for all motorists to stay alert, use caution and follow the rules of the road. If youre a rider, be as visible as possible, and wear a helmet and protective clothing. If youre a driver, know that motorcyclists share the road with you so look out for them at all times. The following tips will help riders stay safe on the road this summer: Before hitting the road, do a pre-ride check to ensure your bike is road ready. Make yourself visible Never assume other drivers can see you. Wear protective gear thats bright and reflective. Ensure your motorcycles lights are working before each trip. Make sure you have the right protection Wear the right helmet: Avoid used helmets. Even if they appear like new, they may have sustained damage thats not visible. After a helmet is damaged, it can weaken and not offer the same level of protection. Choose a full-face helmet with a builtin face shield. Constant wind can make your eyes water so you wont be able to see hazards as well. And, flying insects, dust and debris can hurt your eyes and face. Ensure your helmet meets safety standards. Wear protective gear: Motorcycle helmet, jacket, pants and gloves that cover your wrists and boots that protect your anklesthese materials will help safeguard you from the elements and help protect you in the event of a crash. Watch out for intersections One of the most common types of motorcycle-related crashes occurs in intersections: an oncoming vehicle turns left in front of a motorcyclist. As you approach an intersection, reduce your speed, scan the intersection before entering and adjust your lane position appropriately. Use caution when driving over painted lines. Painted lines that indicate crosswalks, left/right turns and HOV lanes become slippery when wet or when covered with oil from passing cars. Slow down and ensure you dont cross it an angle or with a lean. Never assume drivers have seen you or correctly judged you speed. Slow down on curves Plan your trajectory prior to reaching a curve and adjust your speed and lane position accordingly. This will help you avoid going off the road or crossing the centre line into oncoming traffic when navigating a curve. Before hitting the road on your motorcycle this summer, ensure you and your bike have adequate insurance coverage.

Tiger Woods Closes In On Top Three

Michael Bisping says Chael Sonnen's confidence and style will be the overriding factors in defeating Anderson Silva when the pair lock horns in the main event of UFC 148. From Bisping, originally reported "As well all know, styles make fights, and Chael Sonnen's style as a fighter is a bad recipe for Anderson Silva," began Bisping on this week's episode of UFC Tonight. "You have to be a madman to bet against Anderson Silva. The guy continues to win fights and every time he does it, it looks like something out of a video game," he continued. "But if you look at the previous fight, Chael did very, very well for a long time. I believe the fact he did so well for so long is going to give Chael a lot of confidence. He's gonna come into this fight very confident and that's a big thing in a fight. Confidence is a huge thing. And I think it's a bad style match-up and with the confidence I think Chael gets it done." Back at UFC on FOX 2, "The Count" and "Uncle Chael" faced off in an eliminator bout to determine who would vie for Silva's 185-pound crown. In a closely contested fight, it was the Oregon native who took the honors; that said, some observers believed Bisping just about edged it and should've taken home the decision.

Michael Bisping Says Chael Sonnen Will Defeat Anderson Silva at UFC 148
With regards to his analysis of Silva and Sonnen's first encounter at UFC 117, Bisping is rightstyles do make fights, and the confidence garnered from that first meeting should, in all honesty, stand the 35-year-old in good stead. Prior to succumbing to a triangle-arm bar submission in the final frame of the aforementioned meeting, Sonnen had taken Silva down at will and even out struck the consummate striker, to boot. Nevertheless, that bout took place nearly two years ago. Sonnen tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone following the match and, as a consequence, received a 12-month ban (later reduced to six months on appeal). Furthermore, his performance against Bisping (his last outing) was way below par. In contrast, Silva's last fight was an impressive stoppage of Yushin Okami. With that in mind, it's really hard to make a case for Sonnen (27-11MMA, 6-4 UFC) usurping "The Spider's" title, especially with regards to his confidence going into the fight. However, style-wise, his wrestling pedigree will pose problems for Silva. UFC 148 is scheduled for July 7, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Tiger Woods remains fourth on the world rankings released on Monday after his third win of the season at the AT&T National, but has closed the gap on top three Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood. Welshman Jamie Donaldson, meanwhile, moves from 116th to a career-high 63rd after his maiden European Tour victory at the Irish Open. Woods now has 74 wins on the PGA Tour, moving past Jack Nicklaus into second place, leaving him eight wins away from the record held by Sam Snead. World top 20: 1. Luke Donald (ENG) 9.80pts 2. English football club Manchester United has filed papers in the United States to raise money by selling shares on the US market. In the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Britain's alltime top Premier League team said it would raise up to $100 million in the initial public offering. The team, controlled since 2005 by the billionaire Glazer family, has struggled in recent years with heavy debts despite what is arguably the world's strongest global fan base for a football club.

Manchester United Announces US Share Offering

"We intend to use all of our net proceeds from this offering to reduce our indebtedness," the IPO prospectus said.

Poker Player Wins Record $17.5M
Iranian-born Las Vegas resident Antonio Esfandiari has claimed the richest ever tournament prize, more than $US18 million ($17.5 million). The $US1 million buy-in "Big One for One Drop Texas Hold'em" event was held Sunday through Tuesday at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas as part of the World Series of Poker. Esafandiari took home $US18,346,673 after three days of high-stakes poker, beating Britain's Sam Trickett in the final head-to-head and trumping big name stars such as America's Phil Hellmuth, a 12-time World Series champion. Trickett pocketed more than $US10 million, a return of 10-1 on his initial buy-in investment in the richest tournament ever played. The Big One for One Drop is the brainchild of Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, whose One Drop organisation collected another $US5.3 million, or 11.11 per cent of the 48 players' million dollar entry fees. Mr Laliberte said in a statement he was "grateful" and encouraged "the poker community to stay involved and to spread the word" about his charity, which promotes access to safe drinking water around the world. "Water is essential for life," he added, "and we all have to protect and share it." Mr Laliberte started One Drop five years ago. The group aims to support access to water through education campaigns, specific projects, and microfinance loans to help ensure sustainable development. The NGO says the funds raised from the poker tournament will finance its projects in countries like Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti and India. The group recently announced it would start a new project in Burkina Faso. Cirque du Soleil, based in Montreal, is one of the most well-known contemporary circuses in the world. It was founded in 1984 by Mr Laliberte and Daniel Gauthier, both former street performers.
