Installing TestDirector on the Server

Installing TestDirector on a Web server enables multiple users to access TestDirector via a Web browser, after a single installation process. This method also enables you to create shared default settings for all users.

Recommendations: Use a dedicated server and a dedicated IIS installation for the TestDirector Application Server. No other Web-based applications should be installed or should be using the IIS installation that is dedicated to TestDirector. If you are using a database other than Microsoft Access, install the database server software on a separate server from the one used by the TestDirector Application Server. Install TestDirector by logging in to your Web server machine directly not through any remote utilities.

Note that to install TestDirector you must have full administrator privileges on your Web server machine and full control privileges on the TestDirector domains.

Verifying the Internet Information Server Configuration

Verifying the Internet Information Server Configuration

If the TestDirector Checker (see page 39) indicates a problem in the Internet Information Server (IIS) component, check the following settings: IIS Account Settings TestDirector Virtual Directory Settings

IIS Account Settings

The TestDirector installation creates the TD_IUSER_LOCAL account. IIS uses this account to launch the TestDirector Application Server. To verify the IIS account settings: 1 Go to the Internet Service Manager: If you have IIS 4.0, from the Start menu, choose Programs > Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack > Microsoft Internet Information Server > Internet Service Manager. The Microsoft Management Console opens. If you have IIS 5.0, from the Start menu, choose Settings > Control Panel. Click the Administrative Tools icon and then click the Internet Services Manager icon. The Internet Information Services window opens. 2 In the tree on the left pane, select Default Web Site. (Expand the tree, if needed.) 3 Right-click the TestDirector virtual directory (by default, TDBIN). 4 Click Properties. The TDBIN Properties dialog box opens. 5 Click the Directory Security tab.

51

TestDirector Installation Guide

6 In the Anonymous Access and Authentication Control section, click the Edit button. The Authentication Methods dialog box opens.

The Authentication Methods dialog box contains three methods for setting up the user account used by IIS to launch the TestDirector Application Server: anonymous access, basic authentication, and integrated Windows authentication. Anonymous Access Authentication: If Allow Anonymous Access is selected, IIS launches the TestDirector Application Server with the same user account that enables anonymous access to IIS. To check or change this account, click the Anonymous Access Edit button. The user account for IIS anonymous access is TD_IUSER_LOCAL.

52

Verifying the Internet Information Server Configuration

Basic Authentication: If Basic Authentication is selected, IIS launches the TestDirector Application Server with the same user account that is used for basic authenticated access to IIS. To define a Windows NT domain for basic authentication, click the Basic Authentication Edit button. The Basic Authenticating Domain dialog box opens. Enter a name in the Domain Name box or click Browse to find available domains. When a domain is defined, the client can access IIS with any user account from that domain. Note that if no domain is defined, the client can access IIS with any local user account. Note that when basic authentication is selected, the Web browser transmits user accounts across the network in an unencrypted form. After selecting a domain, you should add all user accounts that have basic authentication selected and that may be used to access the IIS server. The access type for these user accounts must be set to Allow Access and Allow Launch in the Registry Value Permissions dialog box in the DCOM Configuration Utility. Integrated Windows Authentication (Windows NT Challenge/Response): The Integrated Windows Authentication method is best suited for an intranet environment. The current Windows user information on the client machine is used to launch the TestDirector Application Server. Note that this authentication method is supported only by Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 2.0 or later). HTTP proxy connections are not supported.
