CREW ORGANIZATION Although you may be employing all of the crew members described here, it is important to become familiar

with all the roles and their attendant responsibilities. 1. The Producers Team Producer: to shepherd a film from beginning to end / supervisor / the role can vary with the size and complexity of a project. Production Manager (PM): Initial budgeting, logistical planning, managing the pragmatic aspects of a films production budgeting. Craft services / catering: The crews stomachs are not so forgiving. 2. The Directors Team Writer / Director Assistant director (AD): The directors right hand / Communicating with all the departments, making sure that the production is progressing / working hand-inhand with the PM in scheduling all the needed elements for each scene Production Assistants (PA): Do the entire general running around on the set and behind the scenes. 3. The Camera Crew Director of Photography (DP) Camera Operator: In the big production, the camera operator does all actual shooting. First assistant camera person (1st AC): the organization, handling, loading, transportation, setup, maintenance, and cleaning of everything having to do with the film, camera, and lenses / Ensuring that the camera operates properly / Checking the gate / Measuring the focus distance / Controlling focus / Setting the T-stop, frame rate, and shutter angle / Moving the camera to the next setup Second assistant camera person (2nd AC): Filling out camera reports / Bring the lens, filter, or any other equipment / The clapper / loader: marking the scene, loading magazines 4. Grip / Electric Department These departments work closely together on lighting, although the grip crew is also responsible for all rigging involving the camera, from dolly and tracks. The Gaffer: the head of the electric crew / Locating all sources of electricity and directing the setup of the instruments / lighting The key Grip: the head of the grip crew (Usually, the grips work with the instruments is at the direction of the gaffer.) The Best Boy: the gaffers right hand (the grips take care of everything in front of the instruments, and the gaffer and his crew take care of everything at and behind the instruments). 5. 6. The Art Department The Production Designer: the head of the art department / Building and decoration of the set or location. The Art Director: Executing the production designers plans The Set Decorator: Planning the small items on the set The Costume Designer The Props Master The Hair stylists The Makeup People If you cant have all the crewmembers, at least, you have to have critical crews who can cover each different aspect of film production. Suggested minimal crews: Director, AD, DP, sound person, production designer. (5 people) The Team Spirit is the most important!! Filmmaking is a collaborative art. Every crewmember is faced with decisions large and small that contribute many elements to a film. If they do not bring some measure of creativity to these decisions, the project will suffer. Nothing is more destructive than having people around who clearly want to be elsewhere, for whatever reason.
