EdTech 501 Tech Trends Lesson Plan: September 11th

Overview and Purpose:

This lesson is designed for student to utilize modern technology in order to learn basic information behind the attacks on September 11, 2001 and to analyze consequences of terrorist beliefs and attacks.

Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. 2. Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. 3. Evaluate a speakers point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric. 4. Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Objectives (Skills/information that will be learned):

Students will be able to list a timeline of the events surrounding 9/11 Students will be able to label basic characteristics of terrorist groups Students will be able to collaborate with small groups and partners to synthesized researched information.

Information/Outline of Lesson (Give and/or demonstration

necessary information):

1. Journal Entry: Where were you on September 11th, 2001? a. Teacher will introduce the lesson and start by introducing the journal prompt b. Students will write response on tablets c. (Optional): Students can add these responses to a Google doc which can be shared with the classroom 2. Think-Pair-Share Responses a. Student: Share responses virtually using tablets on polleverywhere.com b. Teacher led discussion: Share responses of students or call on students to share their responses c. Teacher: Share personal experience 3. Virtual Search (Activity, see below) 4. Class Lecture (Information) a. Teacher will use PowerPoint to display information about 9/11 and the following events b. Students will follow along with a graphic organizer. Graphic organizer includes questions to reflect and analyze. i. (Optional) Graphic organizer can be on tablet ii. (Optional) Students can also follow along with PowerPoint 5. Review: Google Doc Learning Log Entry (Verification) a. Students will post a response to the following question on their personal learning log: 6. Homework: a. Each student will comment on 3 fellow students posts adding commentary and/or questions.

Verification:
Teacher will monitor students during the Think-Pair-Share to make sure students are staying on task, as well as sharing their journal entries. Teacher will monitor students understanding of information during the class lecture by calling on students to ask questions placed in PowerPoint. Teacher will monitor students understanding of researched material by their presentation during the lecture. If students seem to not have researched accurately, teacher will ask questions to the group to evaluate understanding. Teacher will monitor students responses on their personal learning log to ensure they were able to analyze information to form an educated opinion.

Activity:

1. Virtual Search (Activity) a. Students will be divided into research groups of four students and will use the tablets/iPads to search the following topics on the internet (teacher should quickly review netiquette class rules before allowing students to search online): i. Terrorist groups around the world

ii. When did terrorist start? What is terrorism? iii. Basic information about September 11, 2001 (be able to give a general timeline of the day) iv. How did the United States (including the President) react and respond? War? v. Who are Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda? b. As the teacher begins the class lecture, certain slides will say, Student Teach. When this is displayed, the group responsible will pick a student presenter to share what they learned. If students are not giving enough or appropriate information, the teacher can call on other students in the group for more information.

Notes:
This lesson was designed for an 80-minute block period. Students are accessed on: their participation in their groups, how they synthesize and present their information, the completion of their notes during the lecture, as well as their online submission of prompts given during the class. Many of these activities can be adopted to use without technology if necessary
