Tree Plantings & Tree Adoptions

Partner with MTLA to sponsor and host tree plantings and tree adoptions in neighborhoods throughout the City. Make a lasting & sustainable gift to future generations by supporting the ongoing maintenance of our urban forest.

City-Wide Youth Conference on Climate Change

MTLA has held three Environmental Youth Conferences. Each year several thousand attend. Youth engage, network and are informed on how to support LAs Urban Forest and our overall environment. Tree plantings result from the information youth secure from these conferences.

Youth Leadership Workshops

MTLA engages students throughout our City to educate and train them to be environmental leaders. The focus is to enhance and protect LA Citys urban forest. Trainers are youth peers working in coordination with experts in various fields of urban forestry. Participants learn how to identify a project, build a work plan, market, fundraise and implement the project.

Promote your Corporations commitment to improving our environment

By teaming with MTLA to heighten the visibility of your companies environmental programs. MTLA is partnering with educators to inform the general public and our youth on being wise environmentally conscience consumers.

Support Million Trees Artists Program

We are working with emerging artists to bring awareness to the Million Tree Initiative. Art is reproduced on flyers and bus shelter posters. They are placed throughout the City in high visibility locations.

MTLA Tree Survival Rate

Based on US Forest Service tree survival & growth investigation of MTLA trees planted between 2006 and 2010, sample reflects a relatively high annual survival rate of 95%. Sample group included park and street trees.

Benefits of High Survival Rate

For example, when MTLAs survival rates are applied to 300,000 trees planted at the same time, 41% of the trees are alive after 40 years. The MTLA survival scenario saves about $30 million in avoided tree removal and replacement costs, and contributes an additional $60 million in energy savings, air pollutant uptake, rainfall interception, carbon storage and increased property values because large, healthy trees are producing more services than small dying trees. Although MTLA has not planted one million trees, by keeping more of the trees it plants alive than typically occurs, it is providing residents with relatively more value (about $90 million over 40 years in this example) than other programs that may plant more trees but also lose a higher percentage to mortality.

SAMPLE OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS
In 2009 MTLA received the Outstanding Achievement Environmental Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency. LA City Urban Forestry Division states prior to MTLA, City was planting approx. 10k annually (i.e. City forces, NGOs and developers). MTLA collaboration has increased City planting six fold. MTLA is a true private/public partnership. MTLA receives no direct monies from the City general fund. Signature Projects along major transportation corridors. Changing LA landscape by providing immediate visual and environmental benefits to communities. Fruit tree adoptions for private property plantings. Provides nutritional benefits to families while securing enhanced environmental benefits to LAs urban forest.

SAMPLE OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS CONT.

Local to global environmental youth conference. Several thousand attending. Youth driven with youth speakers connecting to counterparts national and internationally. Action items come out of this conference that are implemented by youth. MTLA is a green jobs program. Working with our non-profit planting contractors, MTLA has supported the employment of over 1,000 youth. In January of 2011, trees made available to residents for energy savings on private property was consolidated under MTLA. This new component of MTLA launched in April. MTLA more than doubled the previous residential tree planting, for the month of April. MTLA and US Forest Service in June of 2010 partnered to host a national community of practice workshop for municipal city tree planting programs. In 2011, US Forest Service National research study results deems MTLA to be one of the top models for large planting programs.

FAQ
Q Why plant trees if we dont have money to trim? A The trees MTLA plant will not need trimming for several years. We need to continue to plant in order to replace trees that are dying due to end of life span. This is critical due to the existing environmental benefits a healthy tree canopy provides LA (i.e. storm water capture, ground water restoration, carbon emission reduction, traffic calming, etc). Q- Why plant when we are in a drought? Trees take up water. A Water for trees is not being wasted. Trees over their life span work to recycle, filter and restore ground water tables. Q What species of trees is MTLA planting? A We plant native or California friendly trees which are tolerant to Law's dry climate. We have worked with AQMD and have an approved list of species we plant. MTLA adopts out both shade and fruit trees to residents and property owners to assist with energy conservation. Q Who waters the trees after planting? A MTLA Signature Projects have 12 to 24 month of watering attached. MTLA contracts with NGOs to water and maintain trees to ensure they have the best chance for survival after planting. This also enables MTLA to provide for supervised youth employment and potential green careers.

Q Why does the City continue the MTLA program when the City has a budget deficit? A MTLA is a true public/private partnership. MTLA does not receive any direct monies from the Citys general fund. Program is supported by grants and corporate partnerships.
