The Wrightwood Improvement Association elected officers at its November meeting Wednesday in the Quigley Room of the St. Thomas More Church, 2825 W. 81st St. President Tony Philbin was again voted WIA president after at first declining to run for re-election. He decided to run after numerous requests from people in the neighborhood. I got about 200 calls from people. People stopped me on the street and people got out of their cars and said Tony, we want you to run. So I announced to my Board, two weeks ago at the board meeting that I was going to run. Philbin said that he was told that his name would not be placed on the ballot. He told those in attendance who wished to vote for him that they would have to write his name in. Board member Cathlean Washington, who has served as the election chairperson for five years, disputed this. I did not state that I would not put his name on the ballot, Washington explained. The slate was turned in at the last meeting, when it was requested by the president. His name is not on it because he was not running for president. Philbins opponent, who until two weeks ago was running unopposed, was WIA Vice President Cassaundra Johnson. Johnson says that she was surprised that Philbin was running, since most of the officers were planning to resign their posts. At that time, Id had several deaths in my family and I really wasnt concerned with being president, Johnson began. But after all officers, just about, were leaving the board, except for myself, I then decided to take the position as president, because we needed somebody to step up to the plate. After hearing from each candidate, WIA members elected officers via secret ballot. Voting members had to have current membership for the past six days, while associate members have no voting rights. The winners were as follows. With Philbin defeating Johnson as a write-in candidate for president, the winner of the vice president position was Karen Anderson, who had no opponent. No candidates were listed for recording secretary. Ollie Allen is the corresponsing secretary. Georgia Sanders is the treasurer and financial secretary. Delores Casey is the sergeant-at-arms. The board members will be Bill Mabry, Shirley St. Andrews and Cathlean Washington. While members were voting, Ald. Lona Lane (18th) addressed the membership, taking concerns and providing follow-ups to issues she is already aware of. Lane also reported success in her fight to keep parking meters out of the 18th ward.

keep parking meters out of the 18th ward. Were the only ward in the city of Chicago to not have parking meters, she noted to the sound of applause. Philbin has previously expressed dismay over a lack of police officers in the 18th Ward. He has drafted a letter of petition calling for more officers and plans to deliver it to the mayors office in person, together with bus loads of supporters. The petition was over 200 signatures short of the 1,000 needed. WIAs goal is to better the community bordered by 76th and 87th streets, and Western and Kedzie avenues. Its next meeting will take the form of the annual Pot Luck Christmas party and is scheduled for Dec. 17.
