Lecture

Lecture Scientific method- It is the logical or systematic approach in solving problems.

Steps: 1. State the problem 2. Formulate the hypothesis 3. Test the hypothesis 4. Gathering the data 5. Analyze the data 6. Drawing the conclusion

Assignment:

Define: a) significant figures b) Scientific Notation

Give the rules of significant figures & writing down numbers on

Lecture their scientific form.

Answer: a) Significant figures: are digits that are known with certainty. b) Scientific notation: is a combination of two numbers. The first number is a decimal number between 1 and 10, called exponent, is a power of ten.

2. Rules of significant figures: 1) all nonzero digits are significant. 2) between two nonzero digits are significant. 3) Zeroes to the left of the first nonzero digit are not significant. 4) If a number is greater than 1, all non-zeros to the right of the decimal point are significant. If a number is less than one only zeros at the end of the number and the zeros between 2 non-zero digits are significant. 5) the zeros immediately to the left of an unexpressed decimal point are not significant.

Scientific Notation: it follow the formula /m x 10^n/ where m consists of one or more significant figure digits which are equal to

Lecture or greater than one but should be less than ten.
