Preface
What is so exiting about simulating public transport in cities? Many people asked us this question at the beginning of the project. During the development of this game, even we often asked ourselves this question, particularly when the development was occasionally frustrating. Nevertheless it ended up becoming a game that transforms complex correlations into something easily understandable. Also, because of its high level complexity running in the background, even we developers were often pleasantly surprised. For us, the very high momentum of the game is a major characteristic. The level-designer particularly had to take this into account, and the results were often very pleasing. What more can you expect from a simulation other than it "lives? There were many problems that came up during the long development time. We dealt with each of them as they occurred and hope that it was worth while. First of all we hope that you, as the player, will get a lot of pleasure from our "baby. As is normal in a preface, we would like to thank everybody who wasnt directly involved in the development but who still contributed enormously to the successful outcome. First of all, we would like to thank all long-standing partners who worked long and hard under great pressure to complete this project. We would also like to thank all our friends who remained friends even although we didnt see them for long periods. Above all we would like to thank our children. They didnt see much of their fathers in the last few months, but still recognised us when we finally did come home. Enjoy the game! It would be a pleasure to hear what you think about it. Do pay us a compliment, criticise us, but above all make suggestions for improvement because when you are reading these lines we shall already be working on our next project and will be trying to create the game of all games.

Programs Running in the Background

Before you start Traffic Giant, you should exit ALL programs. Some screen savers could cause problems for a while, affecting the picture. Should irregularities occur after having activated the screen-saver, we suggest you deactivate it before starting the game. Switching between various applications (application is the term for other software programs) during the running time of the game could also cause problems with some graphic cards, with the game graphics not loading or being updated correctly. Before you start working with another program, please exit the game.

The Main Menu

The Main Menu is at the beginning of the game. From there, you can load saved games, start new games, change your settings, look at the high score list and also exit the game. Every time you exit the game, it will be saved automatically. When you start again and want to carry on where you left off last time, all you have to do is click on "continue to play. When you press the Esc-key during a game, you reach the Load & Save Menu. From there you can return to the main menu.

Difficulty Levels
If you have selected the "endless game in the Main Menu, you get to the menu with the difficulty levels. Here you cannot only choose the difficulty level, but you can also choose various kinds of game mode. Realistic Mode This game simulates a city with inhabitants who behave as realistically as possible. We suggest this mode because it offers the greatest fun. How the inhabitants behave and what correlations there are in the cities will be explained in detail later on in this manual. Easy Mode If you want to start only by building your transport system, then choose this mode. The inhabitants of the city have no destinations. All that is needed is to have as many buildings and inhabitants in the catchment area of the bus or tram stops as possible. The higher the potential of two stops linked with each other, the greater the chance that the passengers use these stops. The advantage of this mode is that you can simply play without having to bother particularly about the correlations. The description of the information functions in this manual is always related to the realistic mode! Entrepreneur You play an entrepreneur, who wants to make the highest possible profit. The objective of the game is to attain the highest value for your company and a maximum coverage in your city. As an entrepreneur you always have to pay attention to your potential passengers moods. Otherwise your buses will soon move empty through the city.

In this mode your concern should be to remove private transport from your city. Even in this mode, you have to attain a certain company value as well as the appropriate area coverage. However, your task is made more difficult by the fact that the reduction of private traffic is the decisive objective of the game. The difficulty or ease of achieving this goal depends, among other things, on the map chosen.

Selecting the Endless Game

In this menu you select the map you would like to play. Click on the arrow key on the left and right of the map name to scroll through all the maps. On the left there is a section of the map selected and an overview map. The text information should help you to select the appropriate map. Once you have selected a map, click on "play.

Now the map is loaded. The distribution of all the inhabitants is newly calculated every time a new game is started, so loading can last a long time, depending on the size of the map! If you want to return to the Main Menu, click on "cancel.

Campaigns
If you would like a specific challenge, then select the Campaign Mode. We have chosen hopefully this complies with your wishes an "easy type of mission sequences. You always start with the first mission only this one is accessible at the beginning - but then it is up to you to choose how to proceed. By the way, once you have attained the games objective, you can play this map endlessly. Every map once generated can be played again at any time. Difficulty Level In the Campaign Mode there are no difficulty levels. You decide at which level you want to conclude a single mission. Every mission has three different objectives, highlighted by stars. To fulfill the mission successfully, you must at least attain the requirements of

one star. After this, the next mission is generated. If you attain the requirements of two or three stars, then the next two or three missions will be generated. This gives you the opportunity to jump missions. Game Objectives The objectives of the missions can be very different from each other. While, in some missions, only the company value is important, it could be important for other missions to transport as many workers as possible to their places of work. The reduction of private traffic could also be a mission goal. Mostly, various objectives are linked with each other. Let us now look at the mission objectives in the example illustrated here. The minimum requirement is that within 8 years you must attain a company value of 1 million and a coverage of 40%. You also have to transport 30% of all visitors to leisure facilities. To conclude the mission as successfully as possible, that is one with three stars, you have to transport an extra 30% of all workers/employees and 30% of all customers of department stores.

Calling up Mission Goals

At any time in the game, you can select the Game Objective Mode to call up the objectives and the present state of the game.

Settings
In the Settings Menu you can configure the game any way you like. All your settings are then saved, so that, whenever you start the game again, they are reloaded automatically.

Graphics
Graphic Resolution You can select three different graphic resolutions here. The high resolutions can only be used if your graphic card can handle them. For slower computers do not select the highest graphic resolution because this will require a high performance from both the graphic card and the processor. If there is not enough main memory and you set too high a graphic resolution, the game can slow down noticeably because parts of the game graphics have to be transferred onto the hard disk. NB: Some older graphic cards do not allow you to change the resolution or the intensity of the colour when the program runs. Should this occur, you will have to restart the operating system. Only then will the new settings will be effective. Graphic Details If the specifications of your computer are high enough, we suggest that you activate all the details. However, in order to let the game run at a comfortable speed, even on computers with lower specifications, there are various possibilities. Animations: If you switch off the animations, the buildings will no longer be animated, losing effects such as the smoke coming from factory chimneys. Clouds: If you switch off the clouds, the screen will be evenly lit as in other isometric games. This reduces the optical effect, but it has no effect on the game-play. Shadows: You can also switch off the shadows generated by the buildings and vehicles. This also has no effect on the game-play. Videos: When you have watched the videos often enough, you can switch them off.

Player
Players Name Here you can give yourself a name. This name will be used when you register in the high score list. Players Colour Here you can also select a players colour. All vehicles and their stops will be indicated by this colour during the game. The choice of colour has no influence on the course of the game.

Operating the Game

Game Objective Depending on the map or mission chosen, certain objectives will be set. These objectives will also be influenced by the selection of the realistic or easy mode. Finally, whether you play as an entrepreneur or as a traffic representative will also influence the objectives.

deaths. That is bad news for the children as they have to go to school all their lives. At the weekend all the family visits a leisure centre for relaxation. To provide a better overview of the simulation, we have simplified some things. For instance, all the men in a residential building have the same place of work, all the women go to the same department store and all the children all go to the same school. All the inhabitants of a residential building go to the same leisure centre. Do not turn up your nose immediately, as you will see that even with these simplifications it will still be difficult enough to understand all the correlations of a large map. To convince the inhabitants to switch from their beloved cars to public transport, you will certainly have to offer something. Generally speaking, the people only use your buses if they can reach one of their destinations by this means. Even then, they weigh up the pros and cons exactly. So, if the bus takes them three times longer than their car, they will certainly not spend a single Euro on a ticket. The quality of the means of transport, the reputation of the company, the intervals (i.e., the time a passenger actually has to wait for a means of transport), personal recommendation asf. play an important role.

To look up the game objective or current state of play, select the Information Mode and click on "Game Objectives.

Inhabitant Behaviour
The city dwellers have certain rhythms. You need to take this into account to attain maximum profits and enjoy the game to the full. There are five important categories of building: Residential buildings Places of work (factories, office buildings, petrol stations, etc.) Department stores Schools Leisure facilities (football stades, cinemas, theatres, museums, churches, etc.) Each inhabitant lives in a residential building and is not going to move into another house. In a residential building there is a strict and admittedly quite antiquated, not to say chauvinistic - allocation of tasks. Most of the time the men commute between work and home. The women go shopping and make sure the fridge stays full. The children, of course, attend school. There are no births or

Why Do People Go by Bus?

As long as an inhabitant can only reach one of his destinations by public transport, he will use his own car. Due to lack of space, only about five per cent of all cars are displayed during the game. (A parked car disappears from the screen). If an inhabitant has the possibility of reaching one of his destinations by public transport, he is bound to take certain decisions. Whether he goes by bus or not, depends, first of all, on his knowledge of the existence of a particular line. The success of a line depends on the number of passengers transported and the quality of the line service (its image).

If he is aware of the line, then he will compare the length of his

18

Traffic Giant

journey by bus with the one by car. If it takes much longer there and back by bus or tram than by car, the possibility of his choosing the bus is reduced. Bear in mind that the journey there and back is always taken into consideration in terms of comparison. If the distance between home and the destination is very short, the traffic-user will prefer walking. Further factors influencing this decision include the waiting times at the bus and tram stops, the line and company image, the courteousness of the staff, the quality and condition of the vehicles in service.

How Often Do the Passengers Change Buses/Trams?

It is not particularly pleasant if one has to change buses ten times to arrive at ones destination. That is why the inhabitants are merely prepared to change means of transport to a maximum of three times. This means you can only use a maximum of four different lines to transport your passengers to a certain destination. If this is the case, it is not important which kinds of transport lines you offer. For example, changing from a bus to a tram might be possible and at times even more desirable.

work, department stores, schools and leisure facilities), then the building selected will again be highlighted green and all the residential buildings where the inhabitants start from will appear in red colour. At the beginning of the game spend some time clicking on various buildings. This is the quickest way to get a first impression of which buildings are important and how the inhabitants are distributed.

Presentation Options
Who Lives and Works Where? For a better overview, you can insert symbols instead of buildings. To be able to react to the inhabitants habits, you must study their needs and get to know their destinations. This information is easy to obtain. For this, select the Information Mode. Click on any building on the game area. In the information window, you will now be able to read detailed information on this building. If this is a residential building, it will be highlighted green and its related destinations red. The destination buildings will not always be near enough to be seen on the game screen. However, on the overview map, the buildings will also be marked green and red." Select the Viewing Mode to decide what should be shown on the game screen. For example, if you switch off the department stores, all of them will be substituted by symbols on the game screen. This way you can quickly find out where the important destination buildings of the city are located. Particularly at the beginning, buildings will often obstruct the view of the pavements. You can neatly avoid this by switching off all the obstructing buildings.

If the building is a destination (this is what we call all places of 20 Traffic Giant Traffic Giant 21

Planning is very important. Never open new lines without a plan, as this will hardly ever be successful. First of all get an overview of the city and its inhabitants. Where are important destination buildings? Where do lots of people live? Which areas are linked to others? Schools are nearly always a good start. Due to the assignment of school catchment areas, school children almost always live near their school. As soon as you know where to fetch your passengers from and where you want to transport them, you can start building busstops. At this point you might as well buy the vehicles. Now set up their route plan and assign the vehicles to the line. Then the line is already ready to be used. If it is also profitable, is another question.

Purchase of Vehicles What Is a Line?

As with most inner-city transport companies, nearly everything in our game has got something to do with transport lines. A line consists of various bus or tram stops, a route - so that the vehicles know where they have to go - and assigned vehicles. Every line in the game is clearly numbered. This cannot be changed and is assigned automatically. Every line is also assigned a name automatically, but you may change it. To open your first line you have to build bus-stops, establish a line at which stops the bus is to stop, which route it is to follow buy vehicles and then assign them to it. No vehicles - no transport company. At the beginning of the game, you have to stay modest - for financial reasons - and go carefully with only a limited number of buses and trams. To buy vehicles select the "Buy Vehicles mode.

Scroll through the list of offers with the help of the arrow keys. For

every vehicle you get information on its attractiveness (how the vehicle will be liked by your future passengers), speed, purchase price, running costs, etc. You can also view the vehicles you already own of this type. If you want to buy a vehicle, then click on the Buy button.

23

If this button is highlighted grey, then you have not got enough money to buy it. For each bought vehicle, a driver will be employed automatically. You even have to pay him when the vehicle is in the depot. So it should be of considerable interest to you not to have too many vehicles being uselessly stored in the depot. At the beginning of the game, you only have a limited choice of vehicles. As the game goes on, better types and also other kinds of means of transport will be added. Better types always make the older vehicles unattractive. If you have sufficient financial means, you should regularly renew your fleet of vehicles.

List of Vehicles
To get an overview of all vehicles in your possession, select the "List of Vehicles mode.

Servicing Vehicles
Passengers feel happiest in clean and safe vehicles. For this reason you should service your vehicles regularly. To set the servicing rhythm select the "Vehicle Servicing mode.

In this mode all vehicles owned by your company are listed. Starting from the left you will see the vehicle symbol, the name of the model, the line to which it is allocated, (no assignment means that this vehicle is in the depot and waits to be used), the condition of the vehicle, the age of the vehicle (in years) and the revenue the vehicle has achieved to date. As a vehicle can have been used on several lines during the course of the game, you can also see its total revenues since it has been in your possession in this overview.

Selling Vehicles
You can sell a vehicle you do not need any more. Select the vehicle on the list and click on the button "sell. The selling price drops according to the age of the vehicle.

In this mode you can also set if a vehicle should be repaired automatically. It is then taken off the line and sent to the depot.

Building Bus & Tram Stops

When you set up a new transport line, it is better to build all the bus or tram stops first. To do so, select the "Build Bus or Tram-Stops mode. Scroll through the list of offers by activating the arrow keys and select a tram or bus stop. The cost of stops normally varies depending on its attractiveness and building costs.

Please observe the following important rules: The bus and tram stops must always be built on a pavement directly next to the road. City railway stations can only be built directly next to existing rails. Normally, bus or tram stops cannot be places on roads or rails. Each bus or tram stop/station can be used by a maximum of four lines simultaneously.

Catchment Area Now move the mouse onto the game screen. You will see that the buildings are either highlighted green or red. This happens only if the bus or tram stops are positioned in a valid area. The green buildings show the area covered by this bus or tram stop. This means that visitors to this building can use this bus or tram stop to get on. The red buildings indicate the buildings that the potential passengers want to reach from this bus or tram stop. Here you can see the optimal coverage of a stop. So if there is no route to the destination buildings, no one will get on a vehicle at this stop to get there.

Controlling Bus or Tram Stops

It is naturally very important to regularly receive current information on the bus or tram stops. The most important information is already displayed on the game screen. Information icons are displayed for all bus or tram stops. These show three items of information simultaneously. The first icon displays the players colour and line number. This means that the vehicles of this line stop at this bus or tram stop to let passengers get on and off. The second icon displays the number of passengers currently waiting at a bus or tram stop for a vehicle. The third icon displays the average passenger waiting time for a bus/tram. If the icon is green and shows a smiling face, everything is fine. If it turns red and the face gets cross, the people waiting are starting to get bad-tempered because the long waiting times are causing their legs to ache. After a certain time passengers start leaving the bus/tram stop. 26 Traffic Giant Traffic Giant 27

You can also click on the bus or tram stop when you are in the Information Mode. You can also obtain the same information by clicking on the icons.

Demolishing Buildings
To demolish buildings, select the Demolish Mode. You can only demolish buildings if you have enough money to pay for it! Demolishing Buildings If you move your mouse cursor over a building, the information window shows you what building it is and how expensive its demolition would be. NB: The rhomboid-shaped cursor is the one used to demolish an area. If this area contains a building, the whole building will be demolished. Demolishing Bus or Tram Stops You can also demolish individual bus or tram stops. If desired, the bus or tram stops have to be demolished and, unlike the vehicles, they cannot be sold. Do think twice before doing so, for later on you could probably find a use for an expensive urban railway. Demolishing on a Large Scale

You then obtain more precise information. A particularly important piece of information is what possibilities are there at this bus or tram stop to change to other lines. The buildings of all the passengers who use this bus or tram stop to get on are highlighted green. The destination buildings visited by these passengers are highlighted red. The buildings of passengers who use this bus or tram stop to get off are also highlighted red.

If you want to clear up a large area of buildings or rails, simply draw a square by keeping the mouse button pressed down. Release the mouse button to demolish that area. If you do not want to demolish anything, then reduce the area size to one field and release the mouse button. Automatical Demolishing When Laying Railway Tracks By the way, when laying tracks, the buildings standing in the way are demolished automatically. So when you lay tracks, you do not have to spend a lot of time clearing the old city. However, it will cost you a lot of money to tear great chunks of the city.

28

Traffic Giant

Traffic Giant

29

Demolition and Its Effects If you have a lot of money, you can certainly demolish important factories or other destination buildings. If so, the factory workers have to find a new place of work. If the inhabitants do not find a new job, they will leave the city, and with them, all the other inhabitants of the residential buildings. As you can see demolition can have a dramatic effect on a city. If you want to destroy a city completely, simply demolish all schools. You will need quite a bit of money for this as well, but the effect is worth while!

List of Lines
For an overview of all available lines or to establish a new line, select the "Select Line mode.

Laying Railway Tracks

To lay tracks for trams, urban railways, etc. select the "Laying Rail Tracks mode. Here you find a list of lines already available. The symbol at the beginning of a line displays if it is a bus line, tram line, etc. Click on the vehicle symbol above the list to arrange the entries in a different order. You can do the same with all the symbols displayed in the bar above the list. The line number is displayed next to the vehicle symbol. All the lines are numbered all the way through. Now the line name, number of bus or tram stops, number of vehicles and the present income follow.

Closing a Line Click on the "Close Line button to close a line. The vehicles used on this line are returned to the vehicle depot and remain available. The bus or tram stops also remain. Tram rails always have to be laid on roads. Please note that trams can never be driven in the opposite direction to road traffic. To lay down rail tracks, select the type. Click on the game screen (for tram rails on a road), keep the mouse cursor pressed and draw the tracks.

Establishing a New Line To set up a new line, select "New Line. To change an existing line, select the line in question, then select the "Establish a New Line mode.

Establishing a Line
In this mode you can establish the route plan for a new line or change an existing one. To establish the route for a new line, click on the game screen to establish the starting point. Beginning at this point, you can determine the route. A line only becomes operative if it leads back to the starting point.

For bus and tram routes, you have to pay attention to the direction of the traffic. Nevertheless, you cannot build in the wrong direction, as this is automatically avoided. Move the mouse cursor over the game screen. A series of grey arrows are displayed. These indicate the direction the route is currently taking. If this is appropriate for you, click onto the relative section of the rail track or road. The first section is now laid down. Since the line does not yet lead back to the starting point, the line is not operative. So it is displayed in grey. If a line goes past a bus or tram stop, then this bus or tram stop is automatically linked to the line. This means that the vehicles will stop at this bus or tram stop. If you do not wish to stop at a bus or tram stop, click on the area next to the bus or tram stop or directly on the bus or tram stop. This one is then deleted from the route. If you click again, it will be inserted again.

To cancel parts of a route, simply move the mouse cursor back over the existing route. Red "x-signs show you which route parts have been cancelled. When you have finally returned to the starting point, activating the route, it is highlighted green. If you like this route, click on the "accept button at the bottom on the right. Otherwise choose a new starting point and change the route as you wish.

On the right there is a picture of the available vehicles. Displayed in the top right corner of the screen you find the number of available vehicles of this type. Any available vehicles are not assigned to any other line. Only vehicles which can be used on the line in question are displayed. Obviously, you cannot assign a tram to a bus line. With the help of the blue arrow key between the list and the picture, you can now assign the vehicles to the line and also remove them again. This can be done at any time and for all lines. You will need to exchange vehicles of a small capacity with ones of a larger capacity and vice versa. By clicking the centre button above the assignment arrows, you can centre the game area on the vehicle chosen. In this vehicle list, you can see the vehicle symbol, the name of the type, how it is being used at present (how many passengers are there in the vehicle), its condition and revenues. Only the revenue this vehicle has earned, since it was assigned to this line, is displayed.

Distance between Vehicles

Assigning Vehicles to a Line

To earn money with a line, you necessarily have to use vehicles. To do so, select the vehicle assignment mode. You can select a vehicle of your choice from your depot to use it on the new line.

It can often be advantageous to let a vehicle leave the bus or tram stop if there is no other vehicle of the same route on the way to the next bus or tram stop. So the vehicles in use drive at checkable distances from each other. To do so, click on the clock symbol in the list. Since overtaking is generally not allowed in our cities, a waiting bus can cause a traffic jam. This can have a negative effect on the traffic situation. You should take this into account when you use this aid.

Here you cannot only see an overview of your entire income and expenditure, but you can also see what the companys image is, its value, the area it covers, its fleet of vehicles, number of bus or tram stops and the total number of passengers transported. The Companys Image The city dwellers assess you company according to the quality of your offer. A number of factors affect this. Principally it is the image of the individual lines, the fare policy, friendliness of the staff and many other factors. Extensive advertising and free tickets can improve the image, but are expensive. The better your image, the more passengers you will attract. Company Value The company value is determined by the status of the accounts plus the value of the vehicles and bus or tram stops minus the starting capital. Coverage This important factor deserves a more precise explanation. Each residential building in which at least one inhabitant would have a journey to one of his destinations by taking your means of transport is added to the coverage. So with a coverage of 50%, in half of the buildings there would be at least one person who fulfills these conditions. The coverage gives no information about how many people really use your line. Balance Sheet Click on the Balance Sheet button to view a detailed balance sheet.

Here you can see if the line is profitable or not. There is also information for evaluating the line (what do the passengers say about your service), how many vehicles and bus/tram stops are used, how well-known the line is (if nobody knows the line, even the best offer cannot help) and how many passengers have been transported to date. The more passengers are transported, the better the line is known. Personal recommendation is therefore invaluable and only very expensive advertising could make up for it.

The better you pay your drivers, the friendlier they are towards your passengers. This has a direct effect on the companys image and lines. You should also invest in further training for your drivers. Only well-trained drivers treat their vehicles carefully. This helps to reduce servicing costs and the number of accidents.

Ticket Prices To determine your fares, select the "Ticket Price mode.

Publicity
Choose the "Advertisement mode to set how much you want to spend on advertising. You can start various advertising campaigns here. The more expensive the campaign, the better its effect. Here the price of the tickets can be set. Like most transport companies, you, too, should offer a fare zone system. At the beginning of the game you can adopt the default settings without any problems. The more expensive the tickets, the less the inhabitants will use your buses. Offering free tickets for certain destinations has a lasting effect on your image and is particularly useful. However, it has a negative effect on your revenues. Nevertheless, this can be your last successful attempt to reach the required objective if you play as a traffic representative.

Overview Map
Salaries Accounts To set the wages for your drivers, select the Wage Mode. Your drivers will also want to be paid for transporting their passengers without accidents and in a friendly way. Above the overview map on the left you can see your present statement of accounts. It is not possible to get a line of credit!

This is easy to see as the districts for which you do not have a transport licence are highlighted green. During the course of the game, the city administration will offer you new districts. To get these, you usually have to fulfill certain requirements. The offer will only be made to you if you can come up to these requirements. So as not to take you completely by surprise, these offers will always be displayed in good time. If you refuse an offer, it will be made to you again in at least one year.

Zooming in the Overview Map

You can also zoom in the overview map. To do so, click on the minimap zoom button. Small maps cannot be zoomed in when in the overview map.
