All of Us - #553
Fr. Larry
"Hey, Father, what's a guy like you doing in a place like this? Shouldn't you be in church saving souls?" That's what I heard over my right shoulder. By the sound of his squeaky voice, I knew automatically that it was my childhood friend, Teddy Merkle. I turned around slowly and sure enough, there he was with a fresh cup of coffee in hand. Teddy seemed to be in a good mood by the very fact that he caught me by surprise on a Saturday morning. He reverently took his place in line behind me with the other customers at the dry cleaners. If we were in church, we would look like a line of Saturday afternoon repentant sinners humbly inching their way to the confessional. I didn't hear or see Teddy come into the shop, even though in the background I heard the brass bells jingle on the doorknob. It was a good way to alarm the owner, who was steaming shirts on the back rack, that a customer had entered through the front door. "Hey, Ted, good to see you. I'm just picking up a few things that I will need for the weekend." "I know what you mean, Father," Teddy said. "I imagine you want to look presentable for the flock. You can't go out to the altar looking like a slobby shepherd." Remember, Teddy, we priests were into black long before wearing black was cool." By the smirk on his face I could tell he agreed with me. "Hi, Miranda," I said to the young girl behind the counter. "I think you have some shirts for me." "Sure, Father. Let me take a quick look." She went off to the side rack and spun it around like a Las Vegas roulette wheel. It miraculously stopped on a dime; the number above her head matched the ticket in her hand. "Four black shirts and two pairs of black pants?" Miranda asked. "That sounds right," I confirmed. Teddy then interjected, "Gee, Father, you could use a little color in your wardrobe. Can't you get those clergy shirts in a nice powder blue? To tell you the truth, I think periwinkle would work well during those hot days of summer. Give it a try." Miranda smiled and hung my stuff on the hook by the cash register. She caught me rolling my eyes.
I whispered to her so that Teddy wouldnt hear, "Not a chance." Then Miranda said, "You know, Father, you can tell a lot about people by the clothes they wear. It says a lot about them." "How so?" I asked her. "Well, for one you can tell if they smoke or drink." "That's probably obvious," Teddy said. "I bet you smell it and see it on the clothes they bring in to get cleaned." "Yep," Miranda said. "I know who drinks scotch, who's into red wine and who likes beer. The shirts and dresses give it away." Miranda went on to say, "I even know where people like to go out to eat. For instance, lamb chops from La Dolce Vita, it was their special on Friday night. Mac and cheese from Three Corners. Yellow mustard from a Cog Hill hotdog on the back nine on Sunday. We have a saying in our business, Father, Stains don't lie.'" "Kind of like sins, right, Father? Miranda, you should get a job with CSI," Teddy said. "You're good." "Father, I can even tell you the names of people on the street who don't know who I am." Miranda said. "How?" I asked. "I can easily recognize them by the clothes theyre wearing. Mrs. Cummings, who lives on Warner, has a red blouse with a green parrot on it. Mr. Tomzik on McCarthy works for a dental lab. He brings in their white shirts every Friday." "What about me?" Teddy tried to test her memory. "You're easy. Youre Teddy Merkle. You have seven or eight golf shirts with 'Goomba' embroidered on them and you like extra giardiniera on your pizza." "Wow, youre good Miranda." Teddy said with admiration. It was obvious he liked her inside knowledge on folks. "Hey, Father, isn't that something? Who would have guessed you could get so much information on people?" Teddy said as he sipped his coffee. A few drops fell onto his shirt. It would be something that Miranda would easily notice and add to her mental database on Teddy...Dunkin Donuts, cream no sugar. And I was worried about someone hacking my email address and taking me to the cleaners. Be nice to your dry cleaner. They probably have a lot of dirt on you.

Faithful Citizenship
The bishops are clear in their statements regarding personal responsibility, the Churchs responsibility and the difficult issues. In the area of personal responsibility they have said, In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue and participation in political life is a moral obligation. Regarding the Churchs responsibility, We bishops ask and seek to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with truth, so that they can make sound moral choices in addressing these challenges. We do not tell Catholics how to vote. The responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience. And on the various issues, The basic right to life implies and is linked to other human rights, to the goods that every person needs to live and thriveincluding food, shelter, health care, education and meaningful work. The use of the death penalty, hunger, lack of health care or housing, human trafficking, the human and moral costs of war and unjust immigration policies are some of the serious moral issues that challenge our consciences and require us to act. ~ from Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship Next week will begin some of the issues.

SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish United in Faith Morning Mass, Please Take Note 2013 Mass Book The 2013 Mass book will be opened to parishioners to book Mass Intentions in the school lobby as follows: Tuesday, July 10th from 1 PM to 7 PM
July 1, 2012
On July 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th, St. Alphonsus Parish will host the daily morning Mass in their Church at 7:30 AM to accommodate the parishioners of the St. Patrick, SS. Cyril & Methodius and St. Alphonsus communities. (There will be a 9:00 AM Mass on Wednesday the 4th of July at St. Cyril's for the holiday.) This is because a number of priests will be gone from the area on retreat and it is the best solution to oblige the people of the three parishes. Please offer a small prayer for the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago and an increase in vocations both religious and lay ministers. The Church depends on those who have decided to devote their time and energy to keeping the mission of Jesus Christ alive and thriving in our society.
Wednesday, July 11th from 9 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 3 PM Thursday, July 12th from 11 AM to 3 PM Beginning July 13th, the Mass book will be available in the Rectory to book Masses. To accommodate all parish families, we allow three (3) Sunday Mass intentions per calendar year per family. Due to space constraints, intention text may be limited. Prior to booking Masses, please complete a Mass Intention Form which is available in the back of church in the gym, at the parish rectory or on our parish website at www.stcyril.org. The Mass offering fee is $10.00. Denise Duda Business Manager
