Ask what their name is and tell them yours. b) Question Chain: What is the date today? -- Do a question chain: ask S1, then have S1 ask S2, S2 ask S3, and so on. Choral the question, holding up one finger per word, as students have problems. -- Write the date on the board. Choral it, pointing at each syllable as you say it. -- Have the students ask their partner. c) Other intros: "How are you today?"; laminated literacy writing boards (if available). 2. NEW WORDS a) Give out one set of cut-up Picture Set per pair. Say the word and have them hold it up. Repeat in a different order. b) Give out the New Word handout. Elicit and write the words on the board. c) Review step (a). Then give out the cut-up word set andplans for Step-by-step lesson have them match. d) Play a game of concentration. (first page you play with a group of 3 1. Have everyone gather around to watch as only shown here) students.
2. Shuffle together a picture set and a word set. Place the cards face down on the table. S1 turns over 2 cards. As they turn over each card, everyone in the group should say the word. If the 2 cards match, they can leave them face up. If they don't match, they must turn them face down again. Then the next player turns over 2 cards, and so on. 3. The game ends when all the cards have been matched, or when the time is up.
3. READERS a) Print the teacher's name on page one before you copy. Make one double-sided copy per pair. Cut the pages in half horizontally, assemble, and staple. (See assembled reader in this kit.) b) Give out one reader per pair. Have the students follow with their finger under the words as you choral (=you say and they repeat). Speak slowly and repeat each page twice. Do again, then have them read in pairs, helping as needed. (You may have to take a group of the lowest students aside to work with.) 4. WRITE a) Write the top word on the board, showing the stroke direction.

FOR DAY ONE YOU NEED:

1.

them and then leave it as a record for the person for whom you sub. If you will be subbing for more than one day, take it home to read over. 2. A day one check-list helps your sub get

4. Words with E: student HO (one per student)

5. Reader Copy Master (2 double-sided pages) organized. Copy double-sided as is. Cut horizontally and assemble. Then fold &

staple along the centre spine. (See the sample reader enclosed.) You will need one reader per student.

6. Write: teacher (one per student) 7. Syllable Cards (There are 2 sets per page). You will need one cut-up

set per pair. (Divide your class by 4 to get the number of copies you need.) 8. Grammar Handout: We are at school (substitute the Where is the teacher? handout if that seems too easy.) 9. Your Family Pix (To intro yourself and give you an idea of their level.) 10. the Attendance Sheet from the office: Record-keeping is extremely important to both the office and the teacher you are subbing for.

Before you go home, check to see if they need you to sub for more than one day and do the prep ahead of time for Days 2 & 3. Dont worry if you dont cover all the material in the lesson plan: just note which ones you cover. Be sure to thank the teacher and tell her how much you enjoyed the class.
