Heat Conduction

(Linear and Radial Heat Conduction in Different Types of Solids)

Objectives: 1. Determine experimentally the steady-state temperature profiles in solids of different types and geometries in which conductive heat transfer occurs. 2. Estimate the thermal conductivity of the solid samples from the temperature profile data and compare the results with the available data in literature. Apparatuses: Vernier Caliper Experimental Design: LINEAR RADIAL

Schematic Diagram: Connect sensor leads (1-9) to the linear conduction unit Apply conduction paste on the contact surfaces of the brass (25mm) sample Wipe off the conduction paste from all samples and from the heater and cooler Change power supply back to linear unit Measure the thickness of the insulator Place the insulator disc between the heated and cooled brass Ensure that the disc is concentric with the two cylinders

Match projections of the sample in the nylon housing

Connect, in sequence, the sensors back to the linear conduction unit Change power supply to radial unit and repeat procedure from* to ** Connect sensor leads (1,2,3 and 7,8,9) to the radial conduction unit

*Ensure cooling water is flowing

Turn on main switch of the electrical console

Slowly increase power controller to the given first trial setting

Wait 25-30 mins then record the temperatures and power input

Repeat procedure with stainless steel as the second sample and then brass (13-mm) as the third sample

Match the projections of the heater with the nylon housing of the cooler Do procedures * to ** Close cooling water supply and disconnect all sensor leads Wipe off any remainder of the conduction paste from samples and linear unit

**Switch off the electrical console

Do a second trial (if there is) with a different power input

Turn power controller to 0% and let it cool

Store samples in place
