NEW YORK STATE NURSES ASSOCIATION ENDORSES DAVID SOARES First endorsement of a District Attorney candidate in NYSNA history Albany County District Attorney David Soares today announced that he has been endorsed by the New York State Nurses Association of Albany County District Attorney. Soares is the first District Attorney ever to receive the endorsement of the NYSNA. I am pleased to receive the endorsement of the New York State Nurses Association, District Attorney Soares said. We have worked together to protect nurses in the workplace and to hold accountable those who do harm to those who work in our health care facilities. I will continue to ensure that those who perpetrate violence against these professionals are brought to justice. The District Attorney has worked to ensure that nurses who work in potentially-dangerous places are safe from violence perpetrated by patients. In 2010 the Violence Against Nurses Law was signed into law by Governor David A. Paterson. This law requires that those who attack nurses on duty be charged with a felony, a change that the District Attorney fought for. In the first case adjudicated in Albany County under the new law, a patient who assaulted and severely injured a nurse in 2011 at the Capital District Psychiatric Center was sentenced to five years in prison. "David Soares has proven himself to be someone we can work with to improve safety and working conditions for nurses in New York State," said Julie Pinkham, NYSNA's interim Executive Director. "His work on the "Violence Against Nurses Law" was crucial as he led the effort to make sure that the State Legislature acted on this measure. Our members are pleased to support him for re-election." "NYSNA proudly endorses David Soares for Albany County District Attorney," said Nancy Kaleda, Deputy Director of the 37,000-member New York State Nurses Association. "His prosecution and conviction of an offender who assaulted a nurse sent a strong message to the nursing community. We are proud to endorse David Soares because he is willing to enforce the law and defend caregivers in Albany County." NYNSA further stated that District Attorney Soares has supported issues important to nurses and that the membership believes that the District Attorney will provide leadership in improving the health care of New Yorkers. -more-
