For a derating factor of 0.15, calculate the number of SCRs in series and parallel units. The maximum difference in their reverse recovery charge is 20 micro coulombs. Calculate (i) the value of dynamic equalizing capacitance and (ii) the voltage across each of the slow thyristors in case one series connected SCR is fast. (b) Explain the working of an oscillator employing an UJT. What are different methods of thyristor commutation? Give detailed explanation of voltage (class D) commutation. (d) Draw the V-I characteristics of following devices and compare them: (i) MOSFET (ii) IGBT (iii) BJT Q.2. Attempt any two parts -----------------------(2*10=20) (a) Explain operation of a single phase fully controlled bridge converter feeding a highly inductive load. Draw waveforms of output voltage, load current and source current. What happens when source has inductance and discuss its effect on performance of converter. (b) What is meant by a dual converter? Explain operation of a dual converter using circulating current mode of working with the help of suitable diagrams. Discuss the use of centre tapped reactor (c) A single phase fully controlled bridge converter is connected to ac supply of 320Sin 314t volts and 50Hz. It operates at a firing angle of 45deg. Also find the circuit turn off time. (c) Describe how single phase low frequency output voltage can be fabricated from segments of three phase input voltage waveform through the use of three phase half wave circuit? Show the half cycle of low frequency output voltage and current in case current lags the low frequency output voltage . Q.4.Attempt any two parts -----------------------(2*10=20)

(a) A single phase thyristor feeds power to a resistive load of 3ohm from 230V, 50Hz supply. Calculate: a. maximum values of avg. and rms thyristor currents b. the minimum circuit turn off time for any firing angle c. the maximum value of di/dt occurring in the thyristors d. the angle at which the greatest forward or reverse voltage will appear across either of the thyristors and magnitude of these voltages. (b) Discuss the operation of a single phase voltage controller with RL load when firing angle is less then or equal to load phase angle. Hence show that for firing angle less then load phase angle, output voltage of ac voltage controller cannot be regulated.
