Introduction

What is ...?

A L TEX is a document preparation system created by Laslie Lamport

It is based on TEX a typesetting system created by Donald Kunth A LyX is an editor for L TEX which closely resembles a word processor JabRef is an editor for managing BibTEX bibliography database

Introduction

Software needed

Execute these les: (can be downloaded from metalab.uniten.edu.my/ alancheah/latex) MikTex installer - wait until it nished. Say yes to all options. LyX installer - wait until it nished. Say yes to all options execpt install dictionary. JabRef installer - wait until it nished.

Start LyX Click File > New... Click Document > Settings Select class le from drop down menu, search for unitenthesis

Enter the preamble


Still under setting, go to Latex preamble Enter the following \title{enter your thesis title} \author{enter your name} \superone{enter your supervisors name} \award{1} \faculty{enter college name} \degree{enter degree name} \titledate{enter month and year} \SID{enter your ID number} \emeladd{enter your email add} \phone{enter your phone number}

Create new le

Entering necessary content

Before you begin, put TEX command \frontmatter. Then you can start typing the following Abstract Acknowledgement Declaration Table of content List of gures List of tables After those is entered, put another TEX command \mainmatter.

Sectioning

Section, subsection, etc.

For section, subsection, subsubsection > follow the same steps chapter and chapter* are not the same chapter is numbered, chapter* is not

Click Insert > Float > Figure


Type in caption in caption box Click Insert > Graphics above caption Browse for graphic le

Resizing graphics

There are options to pick from Output can be scaled or set the width and height LyX display can be turned on or o and scaled
Set a standard size for all gures i.e. width 3.5 inches

Inserting math equation

There are few types of math environment


Inline - equation within the text Display - new line and centered Numbered - like display but with numbers

To insert equation, click Insert > Math. Pick which is it that you want Use toolbar provided to insert symbols

Cross-referencing

Labeling

For cross-referencing, label is used. Basically label can be put anywhere in the document. To insert label, click Insert > Label. Label all you gures, tables and equations.

To insert cross-reference simply click Insert > Cross-reference and pick which part you want to refer to.

Bibliography

We can list bibliography in the document itself. But there is easier way We will use another editor to do that, which is JabRef Open JabRef and create new database.

Adding bib contents

To add record, click + sign and select types of record Fill in all necessary particulars about the record such as author, title, journal, date etc. We have to create the database rst time only where it can be A used with any document we create using L TEX Save the le to sample.bib

Download from the net

Auto-add record
Open e.g. IEEExplore page. Search for a record. Click download citation. Pick BibTEX type. Copy the BibTEX coding and paste in BibTEX code tab in JabRef.

To include citation, click Insert > List/TOC > BibTEX Generated Bibliography Browse for BibTEX database you created, sample.bib For bibliography style, select ieeetr or plain.
