Mechanical ventilators
In this issues Market Choices, we take a look at mechanical ventilators used in ICUs and subacute care units. Most manufacturers offer ventilators that are available in a wide range of configurations, with extensive ventilation therapy, patient monitoring, and power supply features and options. In the interest of space, only select features are described here. The information below, alphabetical by product name, is not a complete listing of the many products on the market. The omission of a product does not indicate a negative assessment, nor does the appearance of a product on this list indicate an endorsement. Products have not been individually tested by RN staff.

INTENSIVE/CRITICAL CARE VENTILATORS

Description Ventilation modes include Assist Control (AC), Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation (SIMV), CPAP, Pressure Support Ventilation (PSV), Non-invasive (NIV), Airway Pressure Release Ventilation/BiPhasic (APRV/BiPhasic), Pressure Regulated Volume Control (PRVC), and Time Cycled Pressure Limited (TCPL). Selectable, full-color waveforms and loops. Bicore esophageal and tracheal monitoring, proximal airway pressure monitoring, and 24-hour trending of 35 parameters. Has an internal compressor Ventilation modes include flow cycled AC, AC, SIMV/IMV, SIMV/PSV, flow cycled SIMV, CPAP, and PSV. Features complete graphics package, 12 monitored parameters, proximal hot wire flow sensor, and internal battery Alarms High/low peak, high/low minute ventilation, high tidal volume, apnea, high respiratory rate, and low exhaled tidal volume Size/weight 17 16 10.5

Bear 1000, Bear 1000 t/es Viasys Healthcare Palm Springs, CA (800) 937-3750 www.viasyshealthcare.com

Ventilation modes include Assist/Conventional Mechanical Ventilation (CMV) and SIMV/CPAP (PSV). Pressure Augmentation assures patient/ventilator synchrony. Pressure slope allows the clinician to adjust rise time to the inspiratory pressure level. Smarttrigger uses computer logic to evaluate demand, then trigger a breath with pressure or flow whichever is more sensitive. The Bear 1000 t/es model adds tracheal and esophageal pressure monitoring.
