Directed Lesson Poetry

Objectives: 1. Students will pick out descriptive words, phrases and lines of an original nursery rhyme. 2. Students will be able to take an original nursery rhyme and recreate the composition. 3. Students will be able to create an original poem using their own words and phrases.

Introduction (hook):

What if the nursery rhyme you grew up reciting went like this?
Ouch needle needle, the hamster and the weeble, The goat hopped over the fence. The scrawny cat yawned and took a nap And the bird caught the worm by the bench!

Demonstration/model:

Teacher will model to students the reciting of a well know nursery rhyme/poem:
Three blind mice, three blind mice, See how they run, see how they run, They all ran after the farmer's wife, Who cut off their tails with a carving knife, Did you ever see such a thing in your life, As three blind mice? Teacher will then break down the poem line by line: Line 1: Three blind mice, three blind mice (repeated verse) Line 2: See how they run, see how they run, (repeated verse) Line 3: They all ran after the farmers wife. (action sequence/verb use) Line 4: Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,(action sequence/verb use, rhymes with wife) Line 5: Did you ever see such a thing in your life, (question regarding action sequence, rhymes with knife) Line 6: As three blind mice? (repeat of line 1 in question form) Teacher recreates the poems composition using her own words and phrases: Nine high flying kites, Nine high flying kites, They toss and twist and dive, they toss and twist and dive, They all are chasing each others tails. The kites move as fast as a shooting stars trail, What could possibly happen if they should fail, The nine high flying kites?

Guided lesson:

Teacher will then have the students work with her. Together theyll pick out the descriptive words, phrases and lines of an original nursery rhyme.
Old King Cole Was a merry old soul, And a merry old soul was he; He called for his pipe, And he called for his bowl, And he called for his fiddlers three! Teacher will then break down the poem line by line: Line 1: Old King Cole (pronoun) Line 2: Was a merry old soul, (2 adjectives, 1 noun/rhymes with Cole) Line 3: And a merry old soul was he; (repeat/statement of line 2) Second stanza Line 1: He called for his pipe, (verb and noun) Line 2: And he called for his bowl, (verb and noun/same as lone 1) Line 3: And he called for his fiddlers three! (rhyming repeat of line 2 using a different noun with an exclamation)

Guided Practice: Teacher, along with the students, looks at the original nursery rhyme

and recreates the composition. Teacher will ask students to contribute their own words and phrases.
Line 1: Tiny Brad Whinny (pronoun) Line 2: Had a pokey little spinney,(2 adjectives, 1 noun/rhymes with whinny) Line 3: What a pokey little skinny had he;(repeat/statement of line 2) Second stanza Line 1: Tiny asked for a pillow, (verb and noun) Line 2: To cushion his back,(verb and noun/same as lone 1) Line 3: So he could ride in his go cart all day! (rhyming repeat of line 2 using a different noun with an exclamation) Share & Review:

Teacher will then display the recreated nursery rhyme:


Little Brad Whinny Had a pokey little spinney, What a pokey little spinney had he; Tiny asked for a pillow,

To cushion his back, So he could ride in his go cart all day!

Teacher will then divide the students into pairs. Each pair will choose one of the original nursery rhymes from the days lesson, and recreate the composition using their own words and phrases. After they have completed the composition, students will share their original nursery rhymes with their individual groups.
