TOMORROW

The city, like most of the bursting cities in India, is mainly on the plains with a river dividing it into two. It has expanded itself to cover around 1500 sq. Km. It experiences a sub-tropical climate with around 6 months of rainfall and 9 solar hours daily providing an excellent opportunity to harvest rain water and solar energy. Presently, the majority of the energy is supplied by super thermal power plants and the city is well connected to the national grid. The city is experiencing an exponential growth in population. We need to upgrade our distribution network in order to meet the increasing electricity demands of the masses. One of the biggest problems that the city is facing today is the haphazard transmission and distribution network. There are huge transmission and distribution losses particularly due to theft. Also, the biggest future challenges of universe are the running out fossil fuel resources. There is a growing need to incorporate renewable energy resources into the main grid and incorporate it in a major way. Smart Grid is the modernisation of present transmission and distribution network. It would enable both automation of the grid as well as reducing transmission and distribution losses and incorporating renewable energy resources into the main grid. Innovation in ideas shall form the basis of revolution in these sectors. Develop a modern grid incorporating your ideas on how to improve and upgrade the present power systems of the city.

LEVEL 1
In level 1, the participants will have to submit a report for being selected to LEVEL-2. The contents of the report should be a case-study and designing a Smart Grid for the city. The various sections of the report could be: ? about what your Smart grid(solution) is? Overview ? Designing a Smart grid for the city(pictorial representation) ? The benefits of the Smart Grid that you have designed. ? the modern grid change the efficiencies and the power transmission and consumption How will in the city? ? Model of the putting up of such a transmission network. Financial ? Suggesting a method to implement the new power infrastructure you have designed. ? Conclusion ? References The last date of entry of the abstract of this report is February 15th, 2011. The abstract will have to be sent in .pdf format to smartcities.cogni@gmail.com. In this abstract, the participant will have to send whatever they have prepared in the report till that day. It has to be a minimum of 3 A4 size pages in standard 11 font size.

The participants short-listed from the received entries will be asked to come over to Roorkee during 11-13th March to participate in the event. The short-listed teams have to send in their complete reports for the next level by 5th March, 2011 failure of which can result in disqualification. For more tips and support for the report preparation, join the event google group.

LEVEL 2
11th March: Level 2 will involve competing with the Smart Grid designs of the other participants in front of a panel comprising of intellectuals from the Planning Commission of India, leaders of Smart Grid Organisations in India and highly-reputed researchers. The participants will be required to prepare a presentation on the basis of what they have sent in the report. The participants will be helped in preparing various simulations and data representation for the event. The winners will be given rewards at the end of this level.

LEVEL 3
After the 2nd level, the participants will be asked to team up with Smart Transport, Smart Water Supply, Smart Building designers and prepare an integrated report on the same with contents of level-1 but incorporating all the verticals as well and thus a complete design of the MODERN CITY. For all this, they will be given 24 hours time. They will need to submit a report by 5 pm 12th of March. Based on the latest integrated report they have submitted, they will have to prepare a presentation and present it to a panel of highly reputed jury members. The award will be awarded to the best integrated Smart City design team members and lots of consolation prizes will be given.
