Bold named principal at Ben Franklin Elementary

MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Steve Bold was introduced as a new principal in one school district June 11 while the school board in another district accepted his resignation three hours later the same evening. Bold, who had been in the Germantown School District for 22 years including 15 as principal at Kennedy Middle School was announced as the new principal at Ben Franklin Elementary School during the Menomonee Falls School Board evening. Several hours later, the Germantown School Board accepted his resignation. Bold will replace Kathy Marks at Ben Franklin. Menomonee Falls Superintendent Patricia Greco said there were 130 applicants for the post. Greco said Bold was selected because he is recognized as a strong instructional leader who has a reputation for outreach to the community and high expectations. Greco noted that a staff member who is also a parent of students in the Germantown district who referenced Bolds work at Kennedy Middle School. Menomonee Falls offering Concerts in the Park

Free concerts will be offered Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. at the Village Centre, located at Main Street and Appleton Avenue, in Menomonee Falls. Thursday concerts will take place at the Village Park Gazebo. Fair Fun Run/Walk returns to Waukesha County Fair

The 2nd Annual Fair Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by 94.5 LAKE FM, will take place Saturday, July 21 at 8 a.m. on the Waukesha County Fairgrounds during the Waukesha County Fair. Runners/walkers of all skill levels and families are welcome to participate. The 5K race or 2-mile walk course takes participants around the perimeter of the fairgrounds including running in gravel, grass, dirt (possibly mud) and asphalt. Both the run and walk will finish on the south end of the grounds, near the Leinie Lodge, site of the annual Kiwanis Pancake breakfast at the Fair. Participants are encouraged to stay and enjoy the pancakes after the event for just $6. Awards will be given to top finishers of the run in each division. For those who register by July 1, the registration fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children (17 and under). Registration includes one all day admission to the Fair for Saturday, July 21 and a complimentary race T-shirt. Registration after July 1 is $25 for adults and $15 for children and does not guarantee a Tshirt. New this year is the option to register a team or a family for a discounted rate before July 1. Online registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 19 but on-site individual registration is available the day of the race. The 170th Waukesha County Fair, sponsored by Aurora Health Care, runs July 18-22, on the Waukesha Expo Grounds.
MWSC Womens Club brunch set for July 16

The Milwaukee West Suburban Christian Womens Club invites the public their next brunch set for Monday, July 16, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at Davians Banquet and Conference Center, 16300 Silver Spring Drive, Menomonee Falls. The event will feature Karen Maihofer of Cedarburg who has given many cooking classes and has been a television cooking show personality. She will show the women how to add special garnishes to our food. Also, speaker Sue Selbin will give a talk on the topic of Lavish, Exquisite, Tantalizing: The Frosting on the Cake of Life. Sussex Cruise Night set for June 28

Sussex Cruise Night will be held Thursday, June 28, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Sussex Village Park. Free museum admission for county residents June 20-24

Free admission will be available for county residents to the Old Courthouse Museum and Old Sheriff's Residence and Jail, 320 S. 5th Avenue, West Bend, June 20-24. As an added bonus, the Old Courthouse and Jail Museums will be open until 7 p.m. June 20. Special activities include trying on a ball and chain and getting an old time mug shot taken, so visitors should bring their camera. Guided tours of the Sheriffs Residence and Jail will take place from 10 a.m. to noon June 23 and 1 to 3 p.m. June 24. When Washington County residents pay their property taxes every year, the county gifts about $2 of each payment to the Washington County Historical Societys Old Courthouse & Old Jailhouse Museums and Research Center. These free admission days give residents an opportunity to see what they are supporting with their tax dollars. Residents are asked to bring a photo id with their current address, or a utility bill with photo ID. Regular museum admission applies to non-county residents. The West Bend Co./Regal Ware Museum is also free to county residents this week, even though it does not receive county financial support.

The states official musical ambassadors of goodwill, the KIDS from Wisconsin will bring their high-energy show to the Schauer Arts & Activities Center in Hartford on Thursday, June 30 at 7 p.m. From their vocal and instrumental talent, to the stunning choreography and costumes, KIDS continues to be one of the Midwests most popular youth music groups. Performing a mixture of disco, Broadway, the iconic hits of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, movie music, and Dixieland Jazz, their 2011 Dare to Dream tour features 21 singer/dancers and a 12-piece show band. Germantown upsets Stevens Point in state softball quarterfinal
Germantown held on to beat defending champion Stevens Point, 3-2, in a Division I softball quarterfinal in Madison June 14. Germantown held a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning when Parris Kurzewski and Shelby Fields singled. Both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. But Germantown's Lauren Renard got the next Stevens Point batters to pop up, strike out and ground out to preserve the victory for the Warhawks. Germantown got on the board first, as Felicia Kons and Erika Berry both singled to start the third inning. Amanda Witzlib then drilled a hit down the left field line to drive in Kons and Berry. Stevens Point evened the score in the sixth inning as Leah Soik singled and advanced to third on a double by Taylor Smola, with Abby Rottier then coming in as a pinch runner for Smola. Soik and Rottier then scored on a triple by Melanie Leopold. Germantown took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Addy Green singled to left field, and advanced to second on a bunt by Jessica Cemke. Green then scored as Alexa Bechler sent a hit down the right field line. Renard allowed seven hits while recording seven strikeouts for the Warhawks. With the win, Germantown the North Shore Conference champion advanced to a June 15 semifinal matchup against Sun Prairie. Cardinals soar past Hamilton Hamilton got off to a good start in its quarterfinal game against Chippewa Falls,
which started tournament play June 14. Katie Weber tripled to left center and then scored on a throwing error to give Hamilton a 1-0 lead. Then Chippewa Falls came up to bat in the bottom of the inning to start an 18-2 victory over Hamilton. The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning before loading the bases, setting the stage for a grand slam by Evie Schaller. Chippewa Falls added four runs in the second inning and two runs in the third and fourth innings. Hamilton got on the board in the third inning, as Weber walked and later scored on a double by Taylor Vigani. The loss ended an impressive postseason run by Hamilton, which finished fifth in the Greater Metro Conference and was seeded ninth in its sectional. Hamilton's run through the playoffs included upsets over first seed Menomonee Falls and second seed Watertown. While the end result was disappointing, the process of getting there is what Hamilton Coach Jim Lawinger will remember. "There's nothing better than a sectional win. That's the greatest feeling you can have in high school sports. A sectional win is awesome," Lawinger said. Lawinger said he told his team they can be disappointed for a few moments as they leave the field. "After that, you're a winner, we got here. We're one of the select few that got here. Schauer offering summer art classes

The Schauer Community School of the Arts announces the following summer visual art classes and workshops for students ages 6 to 13. Hands in Clay for ages 6-12 on Thursdays, July 12-Aug. 2 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. This four week course allows students to develop their connection to clay through exploration of various hand-building techniques. Students will create, glaze, and finish pinch pots, coil pots, and slab pieces that are functional, sculptural or both. 3-D Metal Engraving and Molding for ages 9-13 on Wednesdays, Aug. 1-15 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Students create a 3-D floral arrangement with roses and lilies while learning and using etching techniques in copper. Hoffman selected for Shady Lane post

Brad Hoffman came out of college right to Shady Lane Elementary School. Now, hes moving to the head of the class as principal, pending School Board approval. Hoffman has taught fourth grade at Shady Lane since 2003. He is a member of the schools leadership team, is a coach for Positive Behavioral and Intervention Supports, and serves as a member of the schools data team, scheduling committee, technology team and intervention team. "Its a fantastic school. I really like the direction were heading," he said. "We have a terrific staff." For Hoffman, education was an early career choice, and he never wavered. He knew what he wanted to do the rest of his life back in eighth grade in his hometown of Medford, Wis. "Ive had amazing teachers growing up and the school was always a great place to be," he said. "Ive always enjoyed working with kids as I was growing up." Hoffman is slated to replace Andy Heinowski, who is retiring this month. Though Hoffman is the first teacher in his family he has three siblings, and neither of his parents teaches education was always a priority. "It was something that my family had always valued. School was pretty serious. My parents pushed us hard to succeed and get involved in school," he said. "It was something that was held in high regard in my family." Hoffman earned his degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and minored in social studies. He earned his masters degree in educational leadership from Marion. He substitute taught in Menomonee Falls for a semester and was hired. He never left. Hoffman looks forward to his new role in the principals office instead of the classroom. "I want to focus on our continued success that weve had there, continue working to see all kids grow and working with RTI (Response To Interventions) and PBIS and all the things the district and school are doing," he said. "I love working with kids every day. I like seeing them grow. I like seeing them excited about new experiences. Now, Hoffman is excited about a new experience himself. "Im really excited to serve Shady Lane and the School District of Menomonee Falls in my new capacity," he said. The School Board could approve Hoffmans contract on June 25. He also made a promise to everyone in the district. Every single child that walks through the door (of Ben Franklin) will be treated as if he or she is my own, Bold said. After his presentation to the Menomonee Falls board, Bold noted that he was at Kennedy Middle School for 22 years. When youve been somewhere for over 20 years and you hit that 20 year mark, you start to look at things and say, Maybe sometimes going out and trying something new is a chance to have that rejuvenation, a chance to breathe and find some different interests and life experiences and occupational experiences, Bold said. During his career, Bold has taught in the first, third, fourth, and fifth grades. Bold said he had been looking at several options, including high school posts. He added that while he has not directly worked with Greco, he knows of her past work in the Elmbrook and West Bend districts and leadership in instruction at the national level. Im really excited to learn from her expertise, Bold said. Bold was quick to respond when asked what he would miss about Kennedy Middle School. The kids. Ill miss the kids, he said. Bold noted that he now sees adults that he first taught or interacted with while an assistant principal while they were in school. Theyre still my kids. Theyve been a true asset to work with over the past 22 years, Bold said. Later in the evening, the Germantown School Board approved a motion accepting Bolds resignation as principal, with added language that Bold provide an exit interview to the district.
The true impact of Act 10

BY REP. DAN KNODL For all of the hand-waving and drumbeating and recalling we have seen at the Capitol (and unfortunately the dead-enders seem unfazed by the results of June 5th) you would have thought Act 10 tossed public employees and their mothers out on the streets. After all, it was a little over a year ago that New York Times columnist Paul Krugman wrote that Act 10 was part of a movement to make Wisconsinand eventually, America, less of a functioning democracy and more of a third-world-style oligarchy. Unfortunately for Mr. Krugman, the truth is far less dramatic, as two recent papers published by the American Enterprise Institute and Manhattan Institute have shown. First, according to Josh Barro, public employment levels in Wisconsin will likely rebound (and grow) over the next few years. Barro shows how Wisconsin, as compared to other Midwestern/Rust Belt states, experienced an unusually sharp dip in public employment levels in 2011. This dip was caused by three things: a reduction in state aid to municipal governments, new limitations placed on municipal taxing powers, and pricey legacy contracts that are still valid in many parts of the state. The most important of these factors is temporarylegacy union contractsfor eventually all non-public safety employee legacy contracts will eventually expire. And this is important, because these legacy contracts have kept buried a significant portion of the savings promised by Act 10. With the expiration of those contracts, municipalities across the state should be able to maintain and even expand government services without laying off staff or raising taxes. And those employees will still enjoy a very competitive compensation package, for as Drs. Andrew Biggs and Jason Richwine demonstrate, Act 10 has done little to lessen an already large public sector wage premium. Biggs and Richwine write: After Act 10, Wisconsin state workers receive health benefits nearly twice as valu-

able and pension benefits more than 4.5 times as valuable as what workers in large private firms receive. . . Before Act 10, Wisconsin state employees received total compensation (salary and benefits) about 29 percent higher than comparable private sector workers. After Act 10, the compensation premium is about 22 percent. In dollar terms, the average Wisconsin state worker after Act 10 receives total compensation including benefits equal to $81,637 versus $67,068 for a similarlyskilled private worker, a difference of $14,569. To witprivate sector workers are still asked to pay the higher salaries of their government counterparts, even after sixteen months of terrible, tyrannical, and savage government cuts. We have seen a real decline in public sector payrolls, but even that may be temporary. Tell me again how Republicans crushed public employees? Home sales up 30 percent in May

The housing market in the 4-county Metropolitan Milwaukee area continued to steamroll year-over-year sales figures in May, posting a 30.1% increase over 2011. May is now the 11th month in a row in which home sales have increased by double-digits. When 2012 got off to a fast and robust start, some brokers thought the spring months would see a little easing, however, that has not been the case. The combination of gradually increasing consumer confidence, low interest rates and low prices have established a firm pattern of recovery in the Metropolitan Milwaukee housing market. County-by-County Sales Analysis: Milwaukee County up 25.9% in sales over 2011 for May (875 units vs. 695 units) Waukesha County was up 41.7% vs. May 2011 (493 sales compared with 348) Washington County was up 36.7.% compared to last year (134 vs. 98) Ozaukee County also up 11.1% vs. May 2011 (100 units vs. 90 units) Abundant inventory, which had been a characteristic of the Milwaukee market for the last five years, is waning. Listings have declined in four of the first 5-months of the year, 6% in May, and brokers are reporting significant tightening of listings in certain communities around the area. There are 13,250 active listings in the MLS at this time, which represents 8.3-months of inventory. About even with the 8.6-months in April, but down from 10.5-months in March, and nearly half of the 15.4-months the market had in January. However, the supply of foreclosed properties push up the regions active listings. The inventory of properties not involved in foreclosure is approximately 7.6-months. Therefore, buyers who are looking for a move-in quality home have a little tighter selection to choose from, and may well start seeing price increases soon. Falls HS students raise $18,000 for cancer research

Menomonee Falls, WI This, said cancer survivor Bill Jackson, isnt how teens are portrayed on TV. But it should be. On June 1 Menomonee Falls students held the culmination of a months-long fundraising drive to fight cancer with the second annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life event at the high school football stadium. Key Club advisor Mickey Chavannes said the students raised nearly as much money before the event around $7,000 than they had all last year. He expected to raise about $12,000. The total came in at $18,500. They surpassed their goal by 185 percent. Co-chairpersons were Julie Schweiss and Alexa Morgan began meeting in January to plan. Committees were formed to handle entertainment, fundraising, publicity and team development. They were determined to have a bigger and better event than last year. A lot of hours spent planning, said Morgan. Its stressful. Come Friday, the work paid off. It was all worth it, said Morgan. Its amazing. Were all here for the same thing. All in all, I am so happy about what weve done. Key Club led the effort but on Friday Student Council and FBLA chipped in with various forms of help. About 34 teams and 275 people participated. Jackson, who was selected to serve as the honorary chairman, got involved through students after doing a long-term substitute teaching job last year. Students, he said, are the reason he was there. Its encouraging, he said. This years Relay featured a climbing wall, dunk tank, theme laps and Zumba-athon. A rummage sale and car wash leading up to the event raised more funds, as did inkind online donations. This is all student led, said Chavannes. I cant brag enough about them. Wheelin Wizards player presented with varsity letter

Menomonee Falls High School student Dan Sandow received a varsity letter for his participation with an area wheelchair basketball team. During a presentation before the Menomonee Falls School Board June 12, district Athletic Director Dave Petroff explained that Sandow was nominated for an honor by teacher Kim Hughes. Based on what I saw, I think this young man is deserving of a varsity letter, Petroff said. Petroff explained that Sandow has played wheelchair basketball for the past five years and is currently on the Wheelin Wizards team which is based at the West Suburban YMCA. The Wheelin Wizards have a season that lasts from September to April. This year, the team played at a national tournament in Colorado Springs in March, finishing second in the nation. Petroff noted that Sandow is also a Best Buddies Ambassador at the high school. I just want to say how proud we are to have young men like this at our school, Petroff said. By Thomas J. Hamilton students attend Badger State

Hamilton High School juniors will again attend Badger Girls and Badger Boys State. The young women who will attend Badger Girls State June 17-22 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus are: Emily Poenitsch; and Kate Wehrman. Attending Badger Boys State June 9-16 at Ripon College will be: Kyle Bathke; and Sree Karri. The Sussex Lions Club and the Hamilton High School Athletic Department sponsor the students participation in the program. The students were chosen based on their interest in government, class standing and qualities of leadership, character and fitness. For more than 70 years, Wisconsin high school juniors have been chosen to participate in this unique program where they can meet other students and learn about Wisconsins system of government. Students attending will learn about city, county and state government by carrying out citizenship procedures such as campaigning, voting and holding offices.

At least once to twice a day Im asked the question: Why do I need to have a heartworm test on my dog, I already brought in a stool sample?. Dogs require two tests because parasites can infect the circulatory system and the intestinal track. Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes. When an infected mosquito bites a dog, it can inject the microfilaria that will migrate to the heart and grow into adult worms. This can lead to an infestation that can be fatal. To diagnose heartworm, the veterinarian needs a blood sample. Stool samples are used to check for intestinal parasites. There are many varieties, from large round worms to small protozoa-size parasites like Giardia that can only be seen under a microscope. All of these parasites can make your pet sick, can be passed to other animals, and some can infect humans. A small, fresh stool sample (about 2 tablespoons) is sufficient for testing purposes. Both the blood and the stool test are necessary to keep our pets healthy and worm-free.

(NAPSI)When it comes to decorating, color experts are predicting that homeowners will be seeking out stronger colors in their search for intensity. Seeking Sensation The bold choice to turn to vibrant, optimistic colors is two-fold: a search for euphoria for some and, for others, a sense of oneself. According to PPG Pittsburgh Paints color expert Dee Schlotter, for many people, intensity is a survival strategy in times of crisis. For some, it means seeking out extremes of sensation, rebelling against the bland existence that comes with cynicism and disenchantment. For others, it means unplugging in order to reconnect with a life they feel is fleeting, added Schlotter. Sensation seekers will go for colors that stir the senses and set them in motion, amping up the chromatic density of their lives. Expect their spaces to be full of strong contrasts-heavy and weightless, shadow and light, hot and cold. On the other hand, some individuals will use strong color as a way to turn inward and unplug. Expect them to opt for quiet, understated palettes accented by deep, rich colors in order to create the space they need to take time to relax. If you are thinking of taking the leap to strong, deep color, here are some tips: If you appreciate deep, rich colors outside your home-whether in the clothes you wear or when you see these colors in restaurants or other peoples homesthen you will probably also like them in your own home. Consider an accent wall. This is a great way to get a smaller taste of strong color while still adding interest to the room. Test first. Use a large test sheet and a time testview your color in all light: morning, noon and night. Live with it for a few days to make sure you love it. Dont let timidity hold you back. Recognize that theres only one life to live and theres no time to waste. If not now, then when?
