Rice Husk Gasifier System for Village Electrification in Bihar

Initiative by local entrepreneur Husk Power Systems. Combination of renewable energy and energy efficiency. One 32 kWe rice husk gasifier system provides electricity to 250-400 households. Pre-paid meters used. CFL used for energy efficiency. Each household : 1-3 CFLs. Some houses use Fans and TV.

Villagers

pay Rs. 30 (50 Cents) per month for one 15W CFL and mobile charging. Villagers pay Rs. 60-100(1-1.7 USD) per month and save 2-3 litres of kerosene costing Rs. 100 per month. Mobile charging is free. Farmers pay Rs.50(85 Cents)/hr from saving of diesel cost used in irrigation pump sets.

About 250 villages / hamlets are benefitting in East Champaran, West Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Lakhisarai and Sitamarhi districts by about 60 rice husk based gasifiers.

Villagers pay distribution charges from nearest pole to households (20-40 meters). Villagers have to agree for at least 15-20 kW of load. Cost of 32kW system about Rs. 15-16 lakh (2500027000 USD). Income from households about Rs. 3.5-4.5 lakh (6000-7500 USD). Additional income from day time uses of electricity, sale of ash and rice husk char, carbon credit, etc about Rs. 6-7 lakh (10000-12000 USD).

Central Govt. (MNRE) provides 40% of Capital Cost as grant Carbon Credit Available Profit from each project about Rs. 2.5 5.0 lakh (4000-8400 USD). Return on investment : 15 -30%

Annual

Kerosene saving 14,400 ltrs. Monetary saving (@Rs. 40 ltrs.) - Rs. 5.765 lakh (10000 USD) Employment generation 3-5 persons Conventional electricity avoided 1.26 lakh (126 thousand) kWh per year. Saving of conventional fuel used for generation about 1,000 ton coal

Commercial

activities Sweet shops, Grocery shops and Tea shops in the night. Use of fans, TV sets, Water Pumps, etc. More study hours for students. Increased use of mobile phones. Additional employment to villagers Higher income to farmers by sale of rice husk. Village is active till late evening.

Entrepreneurs

are not available for

expansion. Shortage of technical manpower for O&M. Institutional finance. Uncertain availability and price volatility of raw material.

Farmers

suffer due to nonavailability of electricity. Crop production also suffers. Solar PV pumps a viable option. 2HP / 1800 Watt pump with solar PV module costs Rs. 3.5 lakh. Central Govt. (MNRE) grant 40% State Govt. grant 50% Farmers contribution 10%

Pumping

capacity 3200 ltrs. per

hour. Irrigated area 2-5 acres Diesel saving 20,000 30,000 per acre Crop Intensity Increases Higher Crop Yield

Only

CFL lamps used in rice husk power systems. About 2.2 million BPL rural households electrified under RGGVY (a Central Govt. sponsored prog.) All these households are provided CFL for lighting. Saving of electricity.
