The Sport Education Model By: Daryl Siedentop

What is the Sport Education Model? The Sport Education Model is based on the motion that athletic participation (sports/ athletics) offers many quality education experiences for athletes and team members: however, not all kids get the opportunity to participate because organized sport participation is usually limited to: Those that can afford it ($) Those who make the cut Age Those who can fit it into family or after school demands In addition, even those that make the team often do not learn as much as tey could about the particular sport because their role is restricted to that of player and in many cases just one option. In other words, players seldom get a chance to experience the roles of: Coach Manager Statistician Referee Team Reporter Fitness trainer

KEY:

Formal competition a formal schedule of competitions is announced in advance. Schedules are posted Culminating event A season ending is placed on the schedule as a target for culminating performance. A measure of festivity surrounds the event Record Keeping Records are kept and used to enhance the educational experience Team Size Large teams are not appropriate if quality participation/ learning is desired Game Modification If sport is to be developmentally appropriate, then modification of the tasks and environment must occur (e.g. 5 on 5 soccer, instead of 11 on 11) Diverse Roles Sport Education assigns students more roles than is typical for youth sport, where the only role is that of player
