UALA LUMPUR: Using a combination of phishing and hijacking handphone numbers, a syndicate siphoned about a quarter of a million ringgit from several accounts over the past nine months. Police learnt just how elaborate the syndicates method was only after crippling the gang of cyber crooks with the arrest on Friday of seven people three foreigners and four Malaysians. The suspects are aged between 20 and 27 and comprised a Sierra Leone national who is the mastermind, a Jordanian man, a Pakistani and the Malaysians. They were nabbed when a federal commercial crime investigations department (CCID) team led by cyber crimes and multimedia head ACP Kamaruddin Md Din raided an apartment at the Millennium Square in Section 14, Petaling Jaya. Police also seized computers, fake MyKad and bank ATM cards from the apartment. The mastermind had come to Malaysia in 2005 as a student and graduated with a degree in information technology from a college in Petaling Jaya last year. The Jordanian enrolled as a civil engineering student in 2008. The Pakistani was on a social visit visa. The gang retrieved personal particulars, including usernames and passwords, from an online banking kiosk at a bank branch in Petaling Jaya. They also obtained the transaction authorisation code (TAC) which the bank sends out to the registered handphones of online banking users to transfer funds from the victims accounts. Federal CCID director Commissioner Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan told a press conference yesterday that the gang skimmed the personal details of those who used the kiosk. The gang members attached a thumbdrive with a spyware to download and store the usernames and passwords when the bank customers logged into their

will be cancelled and this will raise their suspicions, Syed Ismail said. To counter this, a syndicate member on the pretext of being a telco staff, will call up their victims a day ahead to inform them that they will face interruptions in their mobile phone services for about two hours. It is during this period that the syndicate would get the new SIM card and obtain the TAC which allows them to transfer all available cash in the targeted account. The biggest single loss was RM50,000, he said. In an unrelated case also on Friday, the CCID arrested two Nigerians and a Malaysian aged between 17 and 23 for cheating an Australian woman, aged 29, of about RM75,000 by luring her into a nonexistent business venture.

Then, using fake MyKad, police report or authorisation letters from the target customers, the crooks reported the handphones as lost and applied for new SIM cards from telecommunications companies.

> Gang uses elaborate method to phish and hijack handphone numbers to clean out bank accounts

A skimming device is attached to an online banking kiosk at a bank to obtain usernames and passwords. Bank customers data are retrieved and used to log into their online banking accounts to find out their registered phone numbers. A new handphone SIM card is obtained from unsuspecting telco, using fake MyKad, authorisation letters or police reports. Syndicate member pretending to be telco company staff calls target customer to warn of a two-hour mobile phone service interruption. Syndicate logs onto to customers account and using TAC number sent to the mobile phone number, transfer funds to another bank account during the phone service interruption period.

This new tactic is a combination of phishing and hijacking SIM cards. Obviously when a new SIM card is issued, the one used by the victim

This is another group of scammers who had targeted Australians by sending out emails claiming they are businessmen. We believe they are behind at least 12 cases involving Australians, Syed Ismail said, adding that the latest victim had alerted police when she realised she had been duped. He said the suspects were caught when they turned up at KL Sentral to meet the victim to collect more money.

Serving ne fare
> ilLidos new pork-free menu offers sumptuous classic Italian fare to salivate over
BY S. INDRA SATHIABALAN

UCKED away in a corner of Jalan Mayang (off Jalan Yap Kwan Seng) in Kuala Lumpur is a gem of a finedining restaurant called ilLido which opened last year. Owned by Beppe de Vito, who also owns three restaurants in Singapore including ilLido in Sentosa, the restaurant serves delectable Italian fare. ilLido (www.il-lido. com.my) initially served pork but it has gone pork-free since last month. Food preparation is overseen by executive chef Andrea Zanella, a familiar face in the local culinary scene. He is responsible for ilLidos menu revamp which now features dishes created using the finest fresh ingredients procured locally and abroad. At a recent food review at the restaurant, we begin our lunch with an amuse bouche (a single, bite-sized hors duvre) a small piece of marinated kingfish with arugula. It is a beautiful combination of sweet and citrusy flavours with some mild bitterness from the aragula. Next up is the seafood carpaccio with citrus dressing. Fresh slices of raw scallops, yabbies, kingfish and anchovies are given a boost of flavours from the tangy dressing. Then comes the crispy-on-the-outside, soft-and-creamy-on-the-inside zucchini flower and mozzarella fritter served on top of vegetable caponata, a mixture of tomatoes, capsicum and olives. For something light and summery, go for the crab salad with watermelon and tomato eliser. The sweet crab plays up well against the refreshing watermelon while the tomato eliser (tomato water) gives it a depth of flavour. For pasta, the squid ink taglierini with crab and saffron is recommended. Chunky pieces of crab claws are used to provide a contrasting texture to the firm al dente pasta which is flavoured with a mild saffron-based sauce. It is pretty tasty and although the portion looks small, it can be filling. Then comes the really delicious carnaroli risotto with crayfish. Carnaroli rice (instead

of arborio) is used at ilLido because it has a better texture. The rich broth in which it is cooked as well as the meaty crayfish make this dish something truly remarkable. For mains, we begin with poached barramundi fillet with aromatic vegetables and herb pesto. The flavours here are mild, but the lightness of the barramundi makes it very enjoyable. Another signature dish here is the veal ossobuco with saffron risotto. There is also bone marrow on the side. You understand why the veal is so popular the moment you cut into its tender and succulent flesh and enjoy the melt-inyour-mouth texture. For dessert, we enjoy the molten lava chocolate cake that lives up to its name when you cut into it and hot chocolate comes pouring out. Eaten with vanilla ice cream, it is a decadent end to a rich meal. ilLido has good coffee too and it is served with a plate of chiacchiere, a type of traditional Italian sweet fritters, at the end of the meal. The restaurant also has its own wine cellar stocked with over 300 old world and new world labels.

Chef Zanella (left) and his creations (clockwise from bottom left) seafood carpaccio; risotto with craysh; squid ink pasta; and poached barramundi llet. Lyla Lin, the sales and marketing manager of ilLido, shows off the two private rooms in the restaurant that can easily seat eight and 14 people respectively. Its main dining area seats about 40 people but for private functions, the floor can take up to 70 people easily. The chairs are designed by Philip Stark to offer diners greater comfort, and special benches and shelves are placed along each table for diners to keep their bags or wine bottle. The dark marble and wood dcor exude a warm atmosphere while the giant light fixtures with moulding-like designs make a great conversation piece. There is also a bar on the roof-top (with a great view of KL Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers) where you can have a drink before adjourning downstairs to enjoy classic Italian cooking. Besides its a la carte and set menus, ilLido also offers a three-course lunch set of daily specials at RM49.90++ per person from Mondays to Fridays. ilLido opens for lunch from noon to 2.30pm (Mondays to Fridays) and for dinner from 6.30pm to 10.30pm (Mondays to Saturdays). The bar is open from Mondays to Saturdays from 5pm to 1am.
