About the PureDisk component of the Deduplication Appliance Software

The PureDisk component of the Deduplication Appliance Software is ideally suited for a company that needs a centralized solution for bandwidth-optimized data backups in datacenters, remote offices, and virtual environments. During the deployment process, you use the storage pool configuration wizard to configure PureDisk services on each node. A NetBackup 5020 appliance upon which you installed one or more PureDisk services is called a PureDisk node. The PureDisk backup environment is called a storage pool. You can configure a PureDisk storage pool from one or more NetBackup 5020 appliances. If you have one NetBackup 5020 appliance, you can configure an all-in-one storage pool. If you have two or more NetBackup 5020 appliances, you can configure a multinode storage pool. In an all-in-one storage pool, the following PureDisk services are all on the same NetBackup 5020 appliance node:
The storage pool authority. This service is the main service in a storage pool. Each storage pool has one storage pool authority service. The content router, which stores file content. The metabase engine, which stores file metadata. The metabase server, which manages metabase engine queries. The NetBackup export engine, which sends information to a NetBackup environment. This service becomes operational only if you enable the NetBackup export feature.
In a multinode configuration, the first node you configure hosts the storage pool authority service and the other services. The other nodes you configure host additional instances of all the other non-storage pool authority services. About the PureDisk platforms

Symantec supports the PureDisk application on three platforms. You can create a PureDisk storage pool on hardware you select, on a virtual machine, or on the NetBackup 5020 appliance. The following table describes PureDisk's characteristics on each platform: Table 1-1 Product

A NetBackup 5020 PureDisk storage pool is one that you configure from one or more NetBackup 5020 hardware appliances. This guide, the Symantec NetBackup 5020 Deduplication Appliance Getting Started Guide, explains how to deploy PureDisk and how to configure a PureDisk storage pool on one or more NetBackup 5020 appliances.
PureDisk Virtual Appliance
A PureDisk Virtual Appliance (PDVA) storage pool is one that you configure on a virtual machine. For more information about PDVA, see the following manual: See the PureDisk Virtual Appliance Getting Started Guide.
PureDisk remote office
A PureDisk remote office storage pool is one that you configure from one or more servers that are compatible with the PureDisk software application. When you configure a PureDisk remote office storage pool, you select your hardware, install PDLinux, and configure the storage pool. For more information about the PureDisk remote office, see the following manual, which contains the information that applies to all PureDisk configurations on all platforms: See the PureDisk Getting Started Guide.
About backing up files and restoring files

The first step in backing up data is to create a data selection. A data selection specifies a list of files and directories that you want to include in a backup. You can back up a data selection on a regular basis by including it in a backup policy. Alternatively, you can make a quick one-time backup of a data selection.

When PureDisk performs a backup, it separates the file content from its metadata. PureDisk uses global deduplication technology to reduce the amount of backup data that it stores. It writes file content to secondary disk storage, and it writes file metadata to a distributed database that is called a metabase. The metadata consists of information about the file such as its owner, where it resides on a client, when it was created, and other information. The metadata also includes a unique fingerprint that identifies the files content to PureDisk. When you restore files, you restore the files or directories that you need. You do not need to restore an entire data selection.
About deduplication
Identical files can reside on multiple clients in a PureDisk environment. However, the PureDisk global data deduplication capability ensures that if identical files exist, only one copy of the files content resides in storage. PureDisk analyzes the content of each file and stores only one backup image for each unique file in the environment. PureDisk breaks files segments. If PureDisk discovers identical segments, it stores only one unique copy of the segment. When files change, PureDisk detects these changes by comparing each file's metadata fingerprint.
About NetBackup interoperation with PureDisk

Symantec supports several ways to use PureDisk in a NetBackup environment. You can write a PureDisk storage pool's disaster recovery backups to NetBackup for safekeeping. If you enable the NetBackup export feature, PureDisk can export data to NetBackup. You also can use PureDisk to reduce the amount of backup data that NetBackup stores in a datacenter. If you want to deduplicate that data that is stored in a NetBackup environment, you can enable the PureDisk Deduplication Option (PDDO). PDDO enables a NetBackup media server to send data to a PureDisk storage pool for deduplication.
About PureDisk on a NetBackup 5020 appliance

Each PureDisk node includes hard disks. PDLinux resides on a mirrored disk RAID set. Upon the other disks is a storage directory, and PureDisk writes all your backups to this storage directory.

The PureDisk application is preinstalled on the appliance. After you provide a small amount of configuration information, the appliance is ready to start backing up clients at your site. A storage pool on a NetBackup 5020 appliance operates in a manner that is very similar to a PureDisk remote office storage pool. Changes to the NetBackup 5020 appliance

The following is a list of changes to the NetBackup 5020 appliance from the NetBackup 5000.
The ChangeIP page was removed. It is replaced with the network configuration wizard, accessible from the installer page. In the appliance shell menu, the following are new to the product or updated:

The System > reset command is now resetstoragepool. The Network > bonding command now has more available options for interface bonding. The Network > setnodeip command, which is used to identify the primary TCP/IP address for the appliance. The Network > unconfig command, which removes all configuration from an interface. The PureDisk > show command, which displays information about the appliance, such as version number and installation date. The System > callhome command is new to this release. It lets you modify the call home feature. The System > factoryreset command is new to this release. It lets you reset the appliance to the factory default settings. The System > hwmon command has new options. It lets you configure hardware fault email settings. The System > InstallerUI command is new to this release. It lets you start and stop the installer user interface.

Known problems for the NetBackup 5020 appliance

The PureDisk Getting Started Guide, contains the list of the problems that are known to exist in the PureDisk application at the time of the PureDisk 6.6 release. The NetBackup PureDisk 6.6.0.3 README file contains release information for the PureDisk level that is present in the Deduplication Appliance Software version 1.2. The following problem is specific to the NetBackup 5020 appliance:

Old browser security certificates can prevent PureDisk from displaying the administrative Web UI
If you start the PureDisk administrative Web UI in a Firefox 3.0 browser, the presence of an old security certificate on your system might cause the browser to generate a message similar to the following:
An error occurred during a connection to storage.pool.com. You have received an invalid certificate. Please contact the server administrator or email correspondent ...
To work around this problem, use Internet Explorer or remove the old security certificate. To remove the old security certificate, complete the following steps:
From the Firefox main menu, select Tools > Options > Advanced > Encryption > View Certificates > Servers. In the Certificate Manager window, remove the certificate for that server. Start a new Firefox browser, and open the link.
If the previous procedure does not resolve the problem, and Firefox generates the same message, press Ctrl+F5 and accept the certificate.

Configuring the NetBackup 5020 appliance

The following overview procedure explains the main steps to configure the NetBackup 5020 appliance. To configure the NetBackup 5020 appliance
Prepare to configure the appliance. Before you start, complete the following procedure. The procedure guides you through some configuration decisions and helps you to collect the information that the configuration wizards request. See Preparing to configure the NetBackup 5020 appliance on page 20.
Rack and cable the appliance. See Racking and cabling the NetBackup 5020 appliance on page 25.
(Conditional) Configure the laptop computer to communicate with the appliance. Perform this procedure only if you attached a laptop to the appliance to perform the configuration. If you attached a keyboard, monitor, and mouse to the appliance, you do not need to perform this procedure. See (Conditional) Configuring the laptop computer to communicate with the NetBackup 5020 appliance on page 27.
Configure the appliance on the corporate network. See Configuring the network on page 28.
Use the storage pool configuration wizard to configure the storage pool. See Configuring the storage pool on page 37.

Preparing to configure the NetBackup 5020 appliance

The following procedure explains tasks you need to perform before you begin to configure the appliance.

To prepare for configuration

Use the packing list in the appliance's box to verify the contents. Decide which of the following configuration methods you want to use:
Laptop method. You can attach a laptop computer to the appliance and perform the configuration from the laptop. When you attach a laptop to the appliance, you configure the appliance through the Web-based configuration wizard. This method is the typical configuration method. Keyboard, monitor, and mouse method. You can attach a keyboard, a monitor, and a mouse to the appliance and perform the configuration from these devices. When you attach these devices to the appliance, you configure the appliance through the appliance's command-line based shell menu.
(Optional) For each appliance that you want to configure, work with your site's network administrator to provision each appliance in the domain name server (DNS). Perform this step if your site has a DNS and you want the appliance to use the DNS. Note: Symantec recommends that you configure the appliance to use a DNS. If you do not have a DNS, use the configuration instructions that explain how to create a hosts file.

A static IP address for the appliance. If you have multiple appliances and you want to configure a multinode storage pool, obtain a static IP address for each appliance. You can configure a secondary network for administrative use after you complete the initial configuration. For information about how to configure the secondary administrative network, see the following: See Configuring a secondary network for storage pool administration on page 62. A fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the appliance. For example, node1.acct.com. If you have multiple appliances and you want to configure a multinode storage pool, obtain an FQDN for each appliance. Obtain the following equipment:
Ethernet cords and/or fiber optic cables to attach the appliance to the network. If you want to attach the appliance to a 10-GB network, obtain one fiber optic cable. If you want to attach the appliance to a 1-GB network, use one of the Ethernet cables that are included in the appliance box. A Windows laptop computer and an additional Ethernet cord. This equipment is required if you want to use a laptop computer to perform the configuration. Use an Ethernet cord to connect the laptop computer to the appliance during the configuration process. If the laptop has a 10 Base T NIC or a 100 Base T NIC, obtain a cross over cable. The laptop needs to be installed with the Windows operating system and a browser. You can use Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 7, or Firefox 3. If you use Internet Explorer 8, use it in compatibility mode; to enable

compatibility mode, select Tools > Compatibility View from the Internet Explorer menu bar. The appliance's displays are best viewed with 1280 X 1024 screen resolution. To maximize screen space, Symantec recommends that you remove all toolbars on the Web browser. OR An additional keyboard, monitor, and mouse. These devices are required if you want to configure the appliance by directly attaching this equipment to the appliance. Alternatively, you can attach the appliance to an existing KVM switch and access the appliance console.

For each storage pool that you want to configure, gather and record the following planning information: My information

Note: This field accepts alphanumeric characters and spaces. Do not

include special characters. (Optional) Storage pool location. The default is Unknown. After you configure your storage pool, you can change this location name in the administrative Web UI. (Optional) Department. The default is Unknown. After you configure your storage pool, you can change this department name in the administrative Web UI. Is this a central storage pool? A central storage pool can gather backup statistics from other storage pools. If you plan to configure only one storage pool at your site, do not check the central storage pool box in the storage pool configuration wizard. Racking and cabling the NetBackup 5020 appliance

The box the appliance comes in includes an installation poster. The poster explains how to rack the appliance, cable the appliance, and how to attach a laptop computer (or a keyboard, monitor, and mouse). By default, NIC 1 on each hardware appliance is assigned IP address 192.168.1.1. When you configure a NetBackup 5020 appliance, it becomes a node in a storage pool. During the configuration process, you assign a new fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and a new IP address to the node. If you have more than one appliance, you can configure them into storage pools of various sizes. For example, you can configure a single appliance into an all-in-one storage pool. If you have several appliances, you can configure them into a few all-in-one storage pools or into a few 2-node or 3-node appliances. If you configure more than one storage pool, these storage pools can replicate backup data to each other. Each storage pool has a main node called the storage pool authority node. In an all-in-one storage pool, that single node is the storage pool authority node. For a multinode storage pool, you can select any node to be the storage pool authority node. The following procedure contains additional information about how to rack and cable the appliance. To rack and cable the appliance
Use the instructions on the installation poster to rack the appliance and to attach the appliance to your corporate network. Depending on your network, your options are as follows:
If only a 1-GB network is available, plug one end of an Ethernet cord into the blue port that is labeled NIC 2, and plug the other end of that cord into your 1-GB network. If only a 10-GB network is available, plug one end of a fiber optic cable into one of the ports that are on the vertically mounted PCI card, and plug the other end of that cable into your 10-GB network.

The 10-GB ports are not labeled on the appliance. On the PCI card, the port on top is NIC 3. The port on the bottom is NIC 4.
If both a 1-GB network and a 10-GB network are available, plug one end of a fiber optic cable into one of the ports that are on the vertically mounted PCI card, and plug the other end of the cable into your 10-GB network. The 10-GB ports are not labeled on the appliance. On the PCI card, the port on top is NIC 3. The port on the bottom is NIC 4. During the configuration process, use the 10-GB network. After the configuration is complete, the appliance uses the 10-GB network for backups, restores, data removal, and other storage pool actions. At a later time, you can configure the appliance to use the 1-GB network or the 10-GB network for storage pool administration.

Connect the appliance to the devices that you want to use for configuration, as follows:
To perform the configuration through a laptop, use an Ethernet cord. Make sure that the laptop is running the Windows operating system. If the laptop has a 10 Base T NIC or a 100 Base T NIC, use a cross over cable. Attach one end of the Ethernet cord from the appliance box to the laptop computer. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cord into the gray port on the appliance that is labeled NIC 1.

To perform the configuration through an attached keyboard, monitor, and mouse, plug those devices into the appropriate ports on the appliance.
Make sure that the laptop or the devices that you want to use for configuration purposes are connected to the NetBackup 5020 appliance that you want to specify as the storage pool authority node. If you have only one appliance, that appliance is automatically defined as the storage pool authority node. If you have more than one appliance, only one appliance can assume the role of the storage pool authority.

After you perform the configuration, you can access the appliance's administrative Web UI through a browser on that laptop or through a browser on any other computer with a network connection. The following procedure explains how to assign an IP address to the laptop so the laptop can communicate with the appliance. Configuring the network

This topic explains how to configure the appliance on the corporate network. Choose one of the following software interfaces for the network configuration process:
Network configuration wizard. The appliance's configuration wizard has two buttons. On the welcome page, the button on top starts the network configuration wizard. The button on the bottom starts the storage pool configuration wizard. If you attached a laptop computer to the appliance, Symantec recommends that you use this method. The configuration wizard guides you through the network configuration process. Appliance shell menu. The shell menu enables you to connect to the appliance through a secure shell connection and configure many appliance characteristics, including the network. After you use the shell menu to configure the network, use the configuration wizard to perform the storage pool configuration. If you attached a keyboard, monitor, and mouse to the appliance, use the appliance shell menu to configure the network.

If you attached the appliance to the 1-GB network, select eth1. This is NIC2. If you attached the appliance to a 10-GB network, select either eth2 or eth3, whichever one corresponds to the port that you used when you cabled the appliance to your network. The PCI card on the back of the appliance hosts two ports. The upper port corresponds to eth2; this is NIC3. The lower port corresponds to eth3; this is NIC4.
You can configure a secondary network for administrative use after you complete the initial configuration. For information about how to configure the secondary administrative network, see the following: See Configuring a secondary network for storage pool administration on page 62. IP Address Type the IP address that you want to assign to the interface in the Network Interface pull-down menu. If dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) is enabled on the network, the IP address field might be populated with an IP address automatically. Change this IP address to a static IP address. After the initial configuration is complete, you cannot restart the network configuration wizard to change an appliance's primary node IP address.

You cannot use the network configuration wizard to change an appliance's primary node IP address.

Using the command line shell menu to configure the network

The following procedure explains how to configure the appliance on the corporate network from the appliance shell menu. To configure the network from the appliance shell menu
Connect to the appliance by using a secure shell (SSH) agent. For example, you can use the PuTTY, which is available as a free download.
Log into the appliance. By default the user name is sysadmin and the password is sysadmin.
Type nodeinfo at the system prompt and press Enter. Verify that the information that the nodeinfo returns. On a new, unconfigured appliance, the IP address is 192.168.1.1.
Type network at the system prompt. For example:

> network
Type the following config add command to specify an IP address and other information for the appliance:
> config add 192.168.1.1 ethnum ip_address netmask
Remember that 192.168.1.1 is the IP address of the appliance as it was configured during manufacturing. In this step, you assign the IP address you obtained from your network administer to the appliance. The parameters are as follows:
For num, specify the number of the appliance port into which the cable that attaches the appliance to your corporate network is plugged. If the appliance is connected to a 1-GB network, num is 1. If the appliance is

connected to a 10-GB network, num is either 2 (for the upper 10-GB port) or 3 (for the lower 10-GB port).
For ip_address, specify the IP address that you want to assign to this appliance. This is the IP address you obtained from your network administrator. For netmask, specify the netmask that you obtained from your network administrator.
For example, the following config add command configures an appliance on 10-GB network with IP address 100.100.100.101 and netmask 255.255.50.50:
> config add 192.168.1.1 eth2 100.100.100.101 255.255.50.50
Type the following route add command to specify the default gateway:

For gateway, specify the gateway address you received from your network administrator. For example:

Perform the procedure in this topic if the appliance is not connected to a domain name server. The appliance's shell menu system provides access to operating system utilities from within a menu system. The shell menu simplifies the administration of the appliance. This topic explains how to use the shell menu to create a list of computers with which the appliance needs to communicate. The information you need for the list includes each computer and the addressing information for that computer. For general information about the shell menu, see the following: See About the Appliance shell menu on page 77. The following procedure explains how to establish a connection from the appliance to the other computers in the appliance's environment. To configure the hosts file
Contact your network administrator and obtain the IP addresses and FQDNs of each computer with which the appliance needs to communicate. This list could include the address information for NetBackup media servers, clients you want to attach to the appliance, and other computers. If you have more than one appliance, and you want to configure a multinode storage pool, include the address information for this particular node and for all the other nodes in the storage pool. Cancel button effects

If you click the Cancel button in the lower right corner of a storage pool configuration wizard page, the wizard exits. The wizard records the configuration specifications as you typed them and before you clicked Cancel. If you want to change your specifications later, restart the wizard, and respecify your selections. Some storage pool configuration wizard pages have a Cancel button in the middle of the page. If you click that middle Cancel button, the wizard cancels the activity for that page only.
Completing the Topology Discovery page

The Topology Discovery page helps you to configure the storage pool authority node and (optionally) other nodes for your storage pool. If you configure only one NetBackup 5020 appliance, then the storage pool authority service and all other services reside on that node. That single node is referred to as the storage pool authority node. There can be only one storage pool

authority service configured in a storage pool. If you do not configure other nodes, this single-node storage pool is referred to as an all-in-one storage pool. If you have more than one NetBackup 5020 appliance, you can configure a storage pool authority node and additional nodes. A storage pool with two or more nodes is referred to as a multinode storage pool. The first node you configure hosts the storage pool authority service and is referred to as the storage pool authority node. The additional nodes host additional copies of the content router service, metabase engine service, metabase server service, and NetBackup export engine service. The procedures that follow explain how to configure the storage pool authority node and additional nodes. The additional nodes are optional. By adding additional nodes, you expand the storage pool's capacity. Proceed as follows:

Every storage pool requires that you configure one storage pool authority node. Complete this procedure for both all-in-one storage pools and for multinode storage pools. The following procedure explains how to configure the storage pool authority node.

To configure the storage pool authority node
Examine the Topology Discovery page. Observe that this page has two panes: Discovered Nodes and Nodes in Storage Pool. Make sure that the node you want to configure as the storage pool authority node appears in the lower Nodes in Storage Pool pane. This is the node you want to configure as the storage pool authority node. The Status field displays SPA Pending Installation for this node. At this time, you can disregard the information in the upper Discovered Nodes pane.
In the Nodes in Storage Pool pane, type the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) you obtained from your network administrator for this node into the New Full Name (FQDN) field. Note: Symantec recommends that you configure all nodes with an FQDN to ensure interoperability with NetBackup. If you do not have an FQDN, you can specify an IP address in this field. If you specify an IP address in this field, however, you cannot change the node's IP address in the future.
Proceed as follows:
If this is the only node you want to configure, click Next and proceed to the following: See Completing the Network Reconfiguration page on page 45. If you want to add mode nodes to this storage pool, proceed to the following: See (Conditional) Configuring additional nodes on page 42.
(Conditional) Configuring additional nodes

Perform this procedure if you want to configure a multinode storage pool. You can also use this procedure to add additional nodes to a storage pool that you configured previously. The following procedure explains how to configure additional, non-storage pool authority nodes. To configure additional nodes

Verify that the Nodes in Storage Pool pane in the bottom half of the page contains a line for the appliance that you specified as the storage pool authority node. Determine whether the Discovered Nodes pane in the top half of the page lists all the non-storage pool authority nodes that you want to include in the storage pool. The storage pool configuration wizard can detect NetBackup 5020 appliances on your network, but in some cases, you need to configure nodes that the wizard could not detect automatically. Proceed as follows:
If all the nodes that you want to configure are listed, complete this procedure to configure those nodes at this time. Proceed to the following: Step 2 If one or more of the nodes that you want to configure are not listed, you need to configure the network information for those nodes. Exit the storage pool configuration wizard, and proceed to the following: See Configuring the network on page 28. After you configure the network information for the unlisted nodes, you can return to the storage pool configuration wizard and complete the configuration.
In the Discovered Nodes pane, select all of the nodes you want to include in this storage pool. To select a node, click in the box to the left of the node's serial number. Select only the nodes you want to include in this storage pool. If there are additional nodes listed in the Discovered Nodes pane, you can configure the other nodes into other storage pools at another time.
Click Add Node to Storage Pool. Observe that the node information for each node you selected moves to the Nodes in Storage Pool pane.
In the Nodes in Storage Pool pane, complete the New Full Name (FQDN) field for each node. Type the fully qualified domain name that you obtained from your network administrator. Note: Symantec recommends that you configure all nodes with an FQDN to ensure interoperability with NetBackup. If you do not have an FQDN, you can specify an IP address in this field.

The following procedure explains how to complete the configuration for a NetBackup 5020 appliance after you specified network information. To continue the configuration
Return to the storage pool configuration wizard session in your browser. If you logged out of the wizard, relaunch the wizard and click Next until you arrive at the Topology Discovery page.
In the Nodes in Storage Pool pane, click Add Node Manually. The Add New Node subpage appears.
In the New Full Name (FQDN) field, type the FQDN of the NetBackup 5020 appliance that you obtained from your network administrator. Note: Symantec recommends that you configure all nodes with an FQDN to ensure interoperability with NetBackup. If you do not have an FQDN, you can specify an IP address in this field.

In the ID field, accept the ID number that the wizard presents to you. Each storage pool in your environment must have a unique ID number. Note: Record the storage pool ID number in a safe place. Failure to record and then correctly reuse this number can result in an inoperable storage pool after a storage pool authority replication (SPAR) restore or another disaster recovery operation.
(Optional) In the Name field, type a name for this storage pool. Perform this step if you want to specify a unique name for this storage pool. By default, the name is PureDisk Appliance. This name appears in the administrative Web UI. You can include special characters in the Name field.

(Optional) In the Description field, type a description for this storage pool. In the Location field, accept the description of Default location for this storage pool or type a new location. If you do not type a new location name, the default location appears as Unknown location in the administrative Web UI. After installation, you can use the administrative Web UI to add additional locations.
In the Department field, accept the description of Default department for this storage pool or type a new department name. If you do not type a new department name, the default department appears as Unknown department in the administrative Web UI. After installation, you can use the administrative Web UI to add additional departments.

(Optional) Check the This is the Central Storage Pool Authority (SPA) box. Check the Central Storage Pool Authority (SPA) box if you want to designate this storage pool as a central storage pool. Symantec recommends that you configure only one central storage pool in your enterprise network. A central storage pool is one that performs all the functions of an independent storage pool but also has central reporting capabilities. A central storage pool authority can generate licensing and capacity reports for all storage pools that report in to the central storage pool. After you complete the configuration, you can launch the administrative Web UI and specify the storage pools that report to the central storage pool. You can enable central reporting now, or you can use the administrative Web UI to enable central reporting at a later time. In the SPA Password field, type the password you want users to type when they log into the administrative Web UI. During manufacturing, this password is set to root. Symantec strongly recommends that you change this password at this time.

(Recommended) In the External NTP Server field, type the FQDN of your site's Network Time Protocol (NTP) server. Symantec strongly recommends the use of an NTP server in production environments. If no NTP server is available, use the appliance shell menu to set the system date after the storage pool is configured. In the PureDisk administrative Web UI, you can click Monitor > System to display the Hardware Monitoring tab. PureDisk detects hardware alerts and displays them in the PureDisk administrative Web UI's Hardware Monitoring tab. From this tab, you can click Clear All Hardware Alerts to clear the alerts. No other actions can be performed from this tab.
Resetting the storage pool

The PureDisk hardware appliance includes a reset function that can remove backup files and/or remove most of your configuration. The reset function might be useful to you if you want to experiment with a configuration before you put it into production. From the configuration wizard, you can select two reset modes, which are Normal and Full. A Full reset deletes all data objects that a Normal reset deletes, plus additional data objects. A third option, the factory reset, can be specified only from the appliance shell menu and is more comprehensive than the Full reset. To add a NetBackup 5020 appliance to the storage pool
Prepare to configure the appliance. Before you start, complete the following procedure, which guides you through some configuration decisions and helps you to collect the information that the configuration wizards request. See Preparing to configure the NetBackup 5020 appliance on page 20.
Rack and cable the appliance. See Racking and cabling the NetBackup 5020 appliance on page 25.
(Conditional) Configure the laptop computer to communicate with the appliance. Perform this procedure only if you attached a laptop to the appliance to perform the configuration. If you attached a keyboard, monitor, and mouse to the appliance, you do not need to perform this procedure. See (Conditional) Configuring the laptop computer to communicate with the NetBackup 5020 appliance on page 27.
Configure the appliance on your corporate network. See Configuring the network on page 28.

About the Call Home feature

The appliance can connect with a Symantec Call Home server and upload hardware and software status information. The appliance uses the HTTPS protocol and uses port 443 to connect to the Symantec Call Home server. This capability is referred to as Call Home and this feature is enabled by default. This allows Symantec support to proactively identify the problems and be ready with a solution in time. If you determine that you have a problem with a piece of hardware, you should contact Symantec Technical Support. The Technical Support Engineer can use the serial number of your appliance and assess the trends of the hardware status. From the command-line interface, you can enable and disable the Call Home feature with the system > callhome enable and system > callhome disable commands. In addition, you can use the following command to set the notification interval:
system > hwmon notification_interval modify time
For interval, specify the number of minutes between the alert mails that are sent to the administration. See Shell menu reference on page 82. The following describes how a hardware failure is reported when the feature is enabled or disabled:

Bonding the network interfaces

The appliance lets you configure the network interfaces to increase network bandwidth and to provide redundancy. The appliance includes two 10-GB ports that you can bond together in one IP address. Caution: Do not bond either of the two 10-GB ports with the 1-GB port . This action can affect performance adversely.

The appliance supports the following bonding modes:
active-backup, which routes all network traffic through a single interface. If
this interface fails, the appliance switches the traffic to another available interface. This mode does not require you to reconfigure network switches.
802.3ad, which supports the IEEE 802.3ad communication standard. This
mode is also known as dynamic link aggregation mode. This mode presents all the interfaces with a single physical address. If you enable this mode, connect the bonded ports to a network switch that supports IEEE 802.3ad dynamic link aggregation.
balance-alb, which distributes both incoming and outgoing network traffic
among all interfaces. This mode does not require you to reconfigure network switches. The following procedure explains how to bond the interfaces. To bond the interfaces in the appliance
Connect to the appliance for which you want to enable a bond by using a secure shell (SSH) agent. For example, you can use the PuTTY, which is available as a free download.
Log into the appliance. By default the user name is sysadmin and the password is sysadmin.
Type network at the system prompt and press Enter. For example:
> network

Type bonding show to display the bonding that is currently in effect. (Conditional) Type bonding disable to disable the bonding that is in effect currently. Perform this step if the bonding show command indicates that bonding is enabled currently.
Type the following bonding enable command to configure bonding:

The required parameters are as follows:
For node_ip_address, specify the IP address you want to use to identify the new bond. For mode, specify active-backup, 802.3ad, or balance-alb.

For bond_ip, specify the IP address you want to use to identify the new bond. For bond_netmask, specify the netmask that you want to use to identify the new bond. For eth1, eth2, eth3, and eth4, specify the interfaces that you want to bond. Specify the interfaces in ethnumber terms. Specify at least two interfaces. For example, specify eth2 and eth3.
For example:
bonding enable 10.10.10.10 balance-alb 10.10.10.20 255.255.255.0 eth2 eth3
The preceding command creates a new virtual interface called bond0 with an IP address of 10.10.10.20 that composed of interfaces eth2 and eth3. You can also specify that the node IP address and the bond IP address be the same. In that case, the primary interface becomes part of the bond.
Configuring a secondary network for storage pool administration

If you have a NetBackup 5020 appliance, and you configured it to use a 10-GB network during the configuration process, you can configure an administrative network on the 1-GB interface. After you configure the administrative network, the 10-GB network becomes dedicated to backups, restores, and other work. The following procedure explains how to configure a 1-GB administrative network for an appliance.

Changing a node's IP address

The following procedure explains how to change a node's IP address. To change a node's IP address
Verify that the node was configured with a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). When you ran the configuration wizard during the initial configuration process, the configuration documentation recommended that you specify a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) in the New Full Name (FQDN) field. If you specified an IP address in this field, however, you cannot change the IP address of this node. To determine whether the node was configured with an FQDN or an IP address, perform the following procedure:

Use an SSH connection to connect to the node you want to change. Type the user name and password for the appliance shell menu. By default, the user name is sysadmin, and the password is sysadmin. After the welcome information appears, press q to display the root mode menu.

Type the following command at the shell menu prompt:

> nodeinfo
Analyze the output. If the node was configured with an FQDN, the output is similar to the following:

Open a new window, create an SSH connection to the node you want to change, and log on as root.
10 Use the ifconfig(8) command to add the new IP address.

In this step, you replace the existing IP address with the new IP address. This action enhances network connectivity during this procedure. Type the command in the following format:
# ifconfig ethnum new_ip_address netmask netmask
For num, type the interface number for this node.

For new_ip_address, type the new IP address that you want to assign to the node. For netmask, type the netmask for the new IP address.
For example:
> ifconfig eth1 10.10.10.11 netmask 255.255.256.0
The ifconfig(8) command also changes the new netmask for the device. This change is needed if the new IP address is in a different subnetwork. Note: The change of address can result in the loss of the user session. You might have to log on again and use the new IP address.
11 Change the IP address in the domain name server (DNS) or in the hosts file(s).
If your site uses a DNS, update the DNS. For example, change the IP address from acme.beep.com/10.10.10.120 to acme.beep.com/10.10.10.121. If your site does not use a DNS, update the hosts files on each computer that interoperates with the appliance node. The following list explains, in general terms, the appliance shell menu commands that you need to update the hosts file on an appliance node:

Use an SSH connection to connect to the node you want to change. Type the user name and password for the appliance shell menu. By default, the user name is sysadmin, and the password is sysadmin. After the welcome information appears, press q to display the root mode menu. To add the new IP address to the node, type network, and then type the hosts add command. To remove the old IP address from the node, type network, and then type the hosts del command. If you have a multinode storage pool, log into another node and use the shell menu's network command to update the hosts file on another node. Update the hosts files on all the other computers that communicate with the node you want to change.
Note that the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the node does not change during this procedure. If you use both a DNS and a hosts file, make sure that the changes you make do not conflict.

If your goal is to change the IP address of the storage pool authority node, use the new IP address you configured previously to connect to the storage pool authority node. If your goal is to change the IP address of another node, use IP address 192.168.1.1 to connect to the storage pool authority node.
13 Type the user name and password for the appliance shell menu.

The NetBackup 5020 has the ability to monitor itself for hardware problems. If it detects a problem that needs attention, it can use three different notification mechanisms:

About the administrative Web UI hardware monitoring and alerts for the NetBackup 5020
You can use the administrative Web UI to monitor the NetBackup 5020 for hardware issues. From the Monitor > Hardware > Appliance Summary view, you can monitor the following hardware information about the appliance. To view the monitored hardware (default view), select Monitor > System > appliance_name. This view provides the various information that is monitored and displayed for each piece of hardware in your NetBackup appliance. You can view the hardware monitoring information through the command-line interface. From the command line, you can run the Main > Admin > Monitor sensor command to monitor a specific piece of hardware or all of the components. You use the sensor variable to designate which piece of hardware you want to monitor. The following table contains the hardware that is monitored as well as a description for each unit. Type - The type of disk that is configured. Enclosure ID - ID of the enclosure that the disk resides in.

If there is a failure with the fan, a Critical warning is displayed. If the fan is not installed, a Not Installed warning is issued. Power Supply Monitors the power supply wattage and reports a failure when the following conditions occur:

The following status warning are also provided: Not Available - Occurs if the power module is installed and no power is supplied. That can occur because it is not connected to the power outlet or some other reason. Not Installed - Occurs if the Power Module is pulled out.

Critical - Occurs if the Power Module is operated with a warning.
RAID
Monitors the RAID status and reports an error if the status changes from optimal. The following data is collected:

Name - The name of the RAID device.
Status - Shows the current status of the device, such as Optimal. Capacity - The capacity of each device.

Type - The type of RAID device, such as RAID1 and RAID 6. Disks - The disks being used .
Temperature Information
Monitors the temperature of the appliance at different points and reports a failure if the following limits are exceeded: Intake Vent Temp Lower than 0 C or higher than 60 C Outtake Vent Temp Lower than 0 C or higher than 60 C Backplane Temp Lower than 0 C or higher than 60 C

About Email notification from the NetBackup 5020

The NetBackup 5020 has the ability to send an email to a local administrator when a hardware failure is detected. You can use the System > hwmon > email command from the command-line interface to configure the email address that you want to use to receive the hardware failure notification. The contents of the email identifies the type of hardware failure that occurred and a status of the failure. For information on how to configure email addresses using the command-line interface, refer to the following topic: See Shell menu reference on page 82. The following table lists the hardware failures that prompt an email notification. It also contains an example of the contents that would appear in the email for each failure. The appliance shell menu is designed to simplify the administration of the NetBackup 5020 appliance. Most of the normal administration functions of a PureDisk server are easily done from within this menu system.

If you press ? after you enter a command, the format and usage of parameter are displayed. If you enter a command incorrectly or enter a command that does not exist, a ^ appears in the error location. For example:

Used to display or change the host names on the NetBackup 5020 appliance. The options for this command are:

hosts
Lets you make changes to the hosts on the NetBackup 5020 appliance. Aliases can be specified using hostname2 and hostname3. hosts del nodeip where nodeip is the TCP/IP address of the node deleted from the /etc/hosts file.
hosts reset deletes all entries in the /etc/hosts file. Depending on how you have name resolution configured, this can be a very destructive command. hosts show displays the current host configuration.
nsswitch
Used to display or configure the information in the /etc/nsswitch.conf file on the NetBackup 5020 appliance. The options for this command are:

ping

Runs the ping command to test connectivity between hosts. By default, the command sends four probe packets. Lets you display and change the TCP/IP routing tables. Lets you perform various actions that are related to patching the NetBackup 5020 appliance. The options for this command are:

patch apply filename applies the filename patch. patch get URL retrieves the patch at the specified URL. The URL is entered in the form ftpscp://URL.
patch list-applied displays all the patches that are applied to the NetBackup 5020 appliance. patch list-downloaded displays all the patches that are downloaded to the NetBackup 5020 appliance and available for application. patch remove filename removes the filename patch.

patch rollback filename rolls back the patch that is specified in string. The value for the filename variable is found by using the patch list-applied command.
restart
Lets you restart the PureDisk services. The options for this command are: restart all which restarts all PureDisk services on all NetBackup 5020 appliances in the environment. restart node which restarts the PureDisk services on the current PureDisk node.
show

poweroff all turns off all the nodes in the environment. poweroff node nodeip where nodeip is the TCP/IP address of the NetBackup 5020 appliance you want to turn off .
ps
Displays the output of the UNIX ps (processes) command. You can also specify nodeip to display the processes on a specific node. Replace nodeip with the TCP/IP address for the specific node.

Authentication brokers
The NetBackup 5020 appliance is preconfigured with a local root broker. For more information about brokers, see the following: See the PureDisk Getting Started Guide.
High availability
On a NetBackup 5020 appliance, PureDisk does not support high availability. Information in the PureDisk documentation that refers to clustering or high availability does not apply to storage pools configured from one or more NetBackup 5020 appliances.
Storage pool reconfiguration

The information in the Storage Pool Management chapter of the PureDisk Administrator's Guide describes several procedures that you can use to manage or reconfigure a storage pool. The management procedures in the PureDisk Administrator's Guide require you to use either the PureDisk software appliance's storage pool configuration wizard, the administrative Web UI, or the command line. Be aware that the storage pool configuration wizard on the NetBackup 5020 appliance differs from the storage pool configuration wizard used by the PureDisk software appliance. The NetBackup 5020 appliance does not support the PureDisk management procedures in the PureDisk Administrator's Guide that require you to start the PureDisk software appliance's storage pool configuration wizard. On the NetBackup 5020 appliance, you can perform the management procedures described in the PureDisk Administrator's Guide that require you to use the administrative Web UI or the command line. In addition, you can perform all the management procedures described in the following: See About the storage pool management procedures you can perform on a NetBackup 5020 appliance on page 53.
About disaster recovery backups and restores

Disaster recovery backups and restores for the NetBackup 5020 appliance are similar to disaster recovery backups and restores for PureDisk software appliance storage pools. When you create a disaster recovery backup policy or perform a disaster recovery restore, use the information in the PureDisk Administrator's Guide along with this topic.

To protect your NetBackup 5020 PureDisk storage pool, create and enable disaster recovery backup policies. For more information, see the following topic: See Creating and enabling a disaster recovery backup on page 99. The NetBackup 5020 appliance provides the following methods to recover your environment in the case of database or data store corruptions or in the event of a severe hardware failure or another disaster, such as a flood:
The recoverCR tool fixes the inconsistencies caused by a corrupted database or a corrupted data store. For example, if you receive an error message that indicates that the spool data area is corrupted, run recoverCR to restore the corrupted system to a consistent state. For more information, see the following topic: See Recovering from corruptions in databases or data store on page 101. A metadata-only restore recovers all PureDisk database and configurations. This method restores only the metadata and leaves the data store intact. For more information, see the following topic: See Performing a metadata-only disaster recovery restore on page 101.
Creating and enabling a disaster recovery backup

To protect your NetBackup 5020 PureDisk storage pool from corruptions, hardware failures, or disasters, create and enable disaster recovery backup policies that support the recovery strategy for your environment. For more detailed information about disaster recovery backups, see the PureDisk Administrator's Guide Note: To perform a metadata-only disaster recovery backup, select the Back up only metadata (databases & configuration) option on the Paramters tab when you create a Disaster Recovery Backup policy. This option backs up storage pool metadata only. Metadata includes the metabase engine database, the configuration database, and the user information database. You cannot perform a full disaster recovery restore from a metadata-only disaster recovery backup. However, you can perform a metadata-only disaster recovery restore from a full disaster recovery backup.

To create and enable PureDisk disaster recovery backup policies

Log on to the storage pool and start the administrative Web UI. Verify that you configured NetBackup or scripts to back up your PureDisk storage pool. Make sure that one of these backup structures is in place before you enable the PureDisk disaster recovery backup policies. For more information about how to create backups, see the following: See the PureDisk Administrator's Guide.

Click Manage > Policies. In the left pane, under Storage Pool Management Policies, expand Disaster Recovery Backup. Select one of the following policies:

The procedures for enabling these policies are identical. In addition, the tabs and fields in the administrative Web UI are the same for each of these policy types. These policies differ only in the type of backup that PureDisk runs when you enable them.

Recovering from corruptions in databases or data store

The following procedure explains how to use the recoverCR tool to recover PureDisk databases and data store that become inconsistent. To recover from corruptions in databases or data store
Extract the following file:

/opt/pdinstall/var/packages/recoverCR-version.tgz
For version, specify the version number of the recoverCR tool that appears in the directory.

Review and follow instructions in the README_FIRST file before you run recoverCR. Run recoverCR.
Performing a metadata-only disaster recovery restore

The following procedure explains how to perform a metadata-only restore to recover PureDisk database and configuration information. Metadata includes the metabase engine database, the configuration database, and the user information database. This method restores only the metadata and leaves the data store intact. Use this method when you encounter a corruption, such as one of the following:

A Postgresql database corruption Missing tables in the storage pool authority database or the metabase engine database
To perform a metadata-only restore
Run the DR_Restore_all.sh script according to the instructions for your environment in the PureDisk Administrator's Guide. To restore only the metadata (databases and configuration files) and leave the data store intact, run the script with the following options:
/opt/pdinstall/DR_Restore_all.sh --no-install --metadataonly
Stop all storage pool services. Perform the following steps:
Step 2a - (Conditional) Stop the services on all non-storage pool authority nodes. Perform this step if you have a multinode storage pool. Log into each of the non-storage pool authority nodes as root and type the following command:

# /etc/init.d/puredisk stop
Step 2b - Stop the services on the storage pool authority node. Perform this step for both multinode storage pools and all-in-one storage pools. Log into the storage pool authority node as root and type the following command:
# /etc/init.d/puredisk stop

On the storage pool authority node, type the following command to reinitialize the metabase server database:
