Course Description
This course introduces the product enhancements of the NS20 and NS20FC. It will focus on the increased capabilities of the Celerra NS20 and where the enhanced models will fit in the Celerra family of products. The new upgrade paths will be described along with the required licenses and limitations.

Intended Audience
This course is intended for those with a Celerra and CLARiiON background who are involved in the installation, configuration, implementation and troubleshooting of the NS20/NS20FC offerings.

NS20/NS20FC Changes - Overview

Increased drive count from 60 to 90 drives Doubled IP storage capacity from 16 to 32 TB per blade Supported DIP (data-in-place) upgrades from NS20/NS20FC to NS40FC CSA with MPFS configuration support (customer installable) for the NS20FC

Note: the NX4 will not replace the NS20, therefore a greater differentiation between the NS and NX lines is required.

The NS20/NS20FC has a new, increased maximum limit of drive count. Up to 90 drives (SATA or FC or mixed) are supported in 6 DAEs. The supported IP storage capacity was doubled. A single blade now supports 32 TB. If the two blades are configured active/active a total of 64 TB is supported. An upgrade path for the NS20/NS20FC to the NS40FC was added to allow for growth and performance increase beyond the NS20 limits. When setting up a new NS20FC, the CSA (Celerra Setup Assistant) now has support for the Celerra feature Multi-Path File system (MPFS). The CSA support for MPFS is included in DART 5.6.39 and later. Because the NS20 is a customer installable machine, the Celerra MPFS platform installation can now be performed by the customer.

Module Title - 10

A Data in Place (DIP) upgrade is possible from all NS20 variations to a NS40, with and without FC option enabled. The upgrade offering converts the NS20/NS20FC captive array (CX3-10 or CX3-10F) to the NS40/NS40FC captive array (CX3-40F). No data needs to be migrated as only the array Storage Processors (SPs) are swapped. Three procedures are available in Celerra Procedure Generator on how to perform the storage processor hardware swap. The customer needs to plan downtime for the Celerra and storage array during the swap. A conversion does not apply to the NS20 that uses SATA vault drives since the NS40/CX3-40F does not support SATA vault drives. Only FC vault drives are supported.

NS20/NS20FC HW Compared to NS40FC HW

NS20 and NS20FC platforms are comprised of the interconnection of 5 building block components:
1. NAS enclosure comprising 1 or 2 blades 2. Control Station 3. Standby Power System enclosure with single SPS unit 4. One to four DAE trays with FC or SATA drives 5. CX3-10 (NS20) or CX3-10F (NS20FC) Storage Processor Enclosure (SPE)

NS40FC also uses building blocks 1-4 above with a few minor differences (see notes)
5. CX3-40F (faster CPU and more memory see notes)

From the hardware perspective the NS20/NS20FC uses the same building blocks except for the storage processors which are swapped out during the conversion process. If the NS20/NS20FC SPS (Standby Power Supply) enclosure only has a single SPS unit, a 2nd SPS must be added. Please read the notes on the differences. The NS20/NS20FC NAS blades IP ports are always 4x10/100/1000 Base T copper ports where the NS40FC has a 2nd option of being configured with 2 optical GbE ports + 2x10/100/1000 BaseT ports. The NAS blades are not part of the conversion. The NS40FC SPS enclosure comes standard with two SPS units and the NS40FC OS DAE trays only permit use of FC drives (ie, SATA vault drives are NOT supported). An NS40FC can support up to 16 DAE trays in total and a CX3-10/CX3-10F has 2 x 1.8GHz and a total cache of 2GB, whereas the CX3-40FC has 4 x 2.8GHz and a total cache of 8GB.

In the case of a conversion from an NS20 to an NS40 when there are no extra FC ports the configuration will have, besides a faster CPU and more SP memory, the support for a higher maximum disk count. The end result of a NS20 to NS40 conversion does not alter back end loop port usage (ie, only a single back end FC loop port is configured post conversion). However, it is likely that the reason for implementing NS20 to NS40 is to add DAE trays and drives beyond the NS20/NS20FCs 6 tray limit. When DAEs are added, additional DAE loops will be configured as part of the new NS40FC configuration. The NS40FC has four BE (back end) loops and supports up to 16 DAEs. For the conversion a 2nd SPS (Standby Power supply) must be added if the NS20/NS20FC SPS enclosure only has a single SPS unit.

The NS20 to NS40FC conversion with the FC option enabled adds 4 additional FC ports for FC host connections. It is also likely that additional FC and/or SATA disks will be required to accommodate greater capacity for the NS40FC target system. In addition to hardware changes mandated by the NS20 to NS40 conversion, license upgrades that mirror the hardware conversion are also required. If the target NS40FC is to have FC ports made available for non-Celerra host usage, the NS40 FC Port Option Enabler license and Navisphere Manager Workgroup license for CX3-40 needs to be purchased. If Powerpath is to be used with the NS40FC, individual host Powerpath licenses need to be purchased.

Upgrading an installed NS20FC with FC Option Enabled to NS40FC with FC Option Enabled can also be done by using the Data-in-Place Conversion kit and procedure. The end result will be NS40FC/CX3-40F platform that features 4 fewer FC ports than NS20FC for connection to Windows/UNIX hosts. If the NS20FC was directly connected to more hosts than the NS40FC can directly support, a SAN topology will need to be added. For the NS20FC to NS40FC upgrade the Navisphere Manager Workgroup license for the CX3-40F will be available as an upgrade. If Bundled Powerpath was in use with NS20FC, then individual Powerpath licenses will need to be purchased.

Note the CX3-40F has 4 BE ports, where as the CX3-10F only has 1 BE. After the conversion the other BE ports can be utilized for more DAEs.

The hardware upgrade requires Celerra Network Server software version 5.5.31 or later and the FLARE version 3.26.10.5.011 or later. You may need to upgrade the Celerra Network Server software and the FLARE software to a later revision. If so, locate the software upgrade procedures in the Celerra Procedure Generator before you begin this upgrade procedure. You must complete these upgrades before proceeding with the rest of the procedure. Three procedures for the NS20/NS40 upgrade are in Celerra Procedure Generator. The procedures are split into preparation tasks and the actual upgrade tasks. Before you begin the upgrade verify minimum system software versions, check the Data-in-Place conversion kit (SP, cables etc.) and verify system health.

EMC Global Services will be responsible for implementing the NS20/NS20FC to NS40FC conversion at the customer site. When a data-in-place upgrade from a Celerra NS20 to a Celerra NS40 is performed, the upgraded NS40 receives a Premium warranty coterminus with the original NS20 warranty end date. The Enhanced level of warranty is not available for the NS40. There is no requirement to order a warranty upgrade model. When the upgraded NS40 is installed, the system will be updated in EMCs installed base to reflect the fact that it is an NS40 system at the Premium level of warranty.

The NS20 comes with 3 year Enhanced warranty which includes 5x9 next business day on-site service, 24x7 remote support and 4 hour remote response commitment. Uplift to Premium warranty is available for 7x24 mission critical onsite support, 4 hour, same day response, critical escalation management, root cause analysis and EMC replacement of all parts. The NS40 comes with a 2-year Premium warranty only.

Premium Support is designed for production environments with mission critical operations, while the Enhanced level of service is aligned to address the needs of test/development environments or non-mission critical operations or price sensitive customers.

To align the NS20 with other EMC Platforms, initial system installation has been removed from the NS20 Premium warranty uplift. As you know it was not included in the Enhanced warranty previously. The new NX4 does not include initial system installation with either the Enhanced warranty or the Premium warranty uplift. The new EMC Installation for Celerra QuickStart replaces the Celerra NS20 CS Accelerator service. On the bottom right you see that we offer a new Implementation only service for CIFS, iSCSI and NFS. Installation is NOT included in the implementation service. The customer must either complete the installation themselves or have their authorized service partner or EMC perform the installation. These services are aligned with the new NX4 and enhanced NS20.
